丹霞是流水把红色砂砾岩切出来的，多在我国南方湿润区；雅丹是干旱区大风把湖相土丘吹蚀出来的，颜色偏灰黄。
Danxia is carved by water from red sandstone in wetter south China; Yardang is shaped by wind from lake-bed mounds in dry northwest, gray-yellow in color.
