Why does El Niño reduce fish catches off Peru?

Normally coastal upwelling brings nutrient-rich deep water to Peru, feeding fish; during El Niño weakened winds let warm water cap the surface, halting upwelling, so nutrients and fish decline.

How is La Niña the opposite of El Niño?

In La Niña the trade winds are stronger than usual, warm water piles further west and the east cools with enhanced upwelling, so weather anomalies tend to oppose those of El Niño.

What is El Nino, and why does a coupled ocean-atmosphere positive feedback let one warm event persist for months?

El Nino denotes a large-scale, persistent anomalous warming of sea surface temperatures across the equatorial central and eastern Pacific, paired with the atmospheric Southern Oscillation in the ENSO cycle. Once the trade winds slacken, equatorial upwelling and the surfacing of cold eastern water weaken, letting warm water spread east and raising central-eastern sea temperatures; the warmer ocean then relaxes the Walker circulation and loosens the trades further. This mutually amplifying Bjerknes feedback sustains the warm state until oceanic wave adjustment shifts the phase toward decay or La Nina, while teleconnections perturb global rainfall and temperature.

Why do El Niño and La Niña often affect weather across half the globe?

They reshape tropical Pacific sea-surface temperatures, shifting atmospheric circulation and jet streams, and via 'teleconnections' send impacts far away, causing droughts or floods elsewhere.

Roughly how often does an El Niño occur?

El Niño has no fixed schedule; it typically appears every two to seven years and can last from several months to over a year.
