Rubies and sapphires are the same mineral—why are their colors different?
它们都是刚玉（氧化铝），本身无色；只因混入了极少的微量元素——红宝石靠铬显红，蓝宝石靠铁和钛显蓝，所以“同矿不同色”。
Both are corundum (aluminum oxide), colorless by itself; trace elements tint them—chromium makes ruby red, iron and titanium make sapphire blue—so it's the same mineral in different colors.
