Why is the end-Permian extinction called 'the Great Dying'?

The end-Permian event about 252 million years ago wiped out ~90% of marine species and 70% of terrestrial ones, the worst mass extinction in Earth's history. It may link to Siberian flood-basalt volcanism causing climate shifts and ocean anoxia.

Why are there fossils on mountains?

Fossils on a summit began as seabed sediment: mud and shells compacted into limestone or shale in a shallow sea, and later plate collision folded and lifted that crust kilometres into the air. The limestone capping Everest preserves crinoid stems and brachiopod debris, laid down in the shallow Tethys ocean, while younger units across the Tibetan plateau expose ammonites and marine shales. Uplift runs only on the order of millimetres a year, but tens of millions of years add up to kilometres, so 'marine fossils on a mountain' is not a coincidence but the plainest evidence for plate tectonics. The same logic explains tropical plant fossils inside coal measures.

How are rock ages measured with radioactive isotopes?

Some elements like uranium-lead and potassium-argon decay at fixed half-lives; measuring parent-to-daughter ratios in rock gives its formation age. Different isotopes suit different time scales, with U-Pb commonly dating ancient zircons.

Why do some rocks look young yet date very old?

Isotopic dating measures when minerals last crystallized or were reset by metamorphism, not their looks. If rock later underwent heating that reset the 'clock', or weathering changed appearance, age and look can mismatch.

Why is zircon U-Pb dating regarded as the benchmark method for igneous geochronology, and how do its two decay chains cross-check system closure?

Zircon lattices admit U4+ yet exclude Pb2+, leaving near-zero initial common lead and hence few error sources. The parallel clocks of 238U→206Pb and 235U→207Pb are tested on concordia: coincident dual ages certify that parent-daughter elements were never lost since crystallization. With Pb closure above 900 °C, zircon retains its primary crystallization age even through later metamorphism.

Why can U-Pb dating of zircon yield high-precision ages, whereas the K-Ar method is better suited to dating eruption times of volcanic rocks?

Zircon accepts uranium into its lattice but rejects lead almost completely, so initial lead can be treated as zero; the two decay chains 238U-to-206Pb and 235U-to-207Pb also cross-check each other, letting concordia diagrams flag samples that suffered later lead loss. K-Ar dating instead relies on argon accumulated in potassium-bearing minerals; with a low closure temperature, rapid cooling of volcanic rock seals in the isotopic signature of eruption time. U-Pb therefore suits ancient terranes and detrital provenance work, while K-Ar commonly dates young volcanic events.

What is a Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP, "golden spike"), and why are chronostratigraphic boundaries defined by fossil markers rather than by lithology?

A GSSP is a globally agreed physical point in a continuous, well-exposed section, designated by the International Commission on Stratigraphy as the standard base of a chronostratigraphic unit such as a stage. Lithological boundaries are often diachronous: sandstone and limestone may accumulate simultaneously in different basins, so facies cannot be correlated worldwide. The first appearance of a marker species, by contrast, approximates an isochronous time plane. Golden spikes therefore rely chiefly on fossil first appearances, aided by geochemical events.

What is the likely cause of the end-Cretaceous extinction?
