What is a rift valley?
A rift valley is a long, narrow depression where the lithosphere is stretched thin and the center drops down, often marking the early stage of continental splitting. The East African Rift shows a continent actively pulling apart.

How do karst landscapes (such as caves and sinkholes) form?
In regions of soluble rock such as limestone and dolomite, mildly acidic rainwater dissolves the rock along fractures, over time carving underground caves and streams; when a cave roof collapses, it forms a sinkhole. Guilin's peaks and the Stone Forest in Yunnan, China, are classic karst landscapes.

How do river meanders and oxbow lakes form?
On flat terrain a river erodes more on its sides, cutting into outer banks and depositing on inner ones, so the channel gradually bends into snake-like meanders. When a flood cuts across the narrow neck between two bends, the river takes a shortcut and the abandoned loop is sealed off into a crescent-shaped oxbow lake.

What is a landslide, and what are common triggering factors?
A landslide is the downslope movement of rock or soil under gravity when a slope becomes unstable. Common triggers include prolonged heavy rain that saturates the ground, earthquake shaking, volcanic activity, human cutting or excavation of slopes, and erosion at the toe by rivers or waves.

How do rivers reshape floodplains through meandering and oxbow lakes?
A meandering river erodes its outer bank and deposits on the inner one, swinging sideways and widening the meander belt. When a flood cuts across the narrow neck of a loop, the abandoned bend is isolated as an oxbow lake. Leopold and Wolman described this morphological evolution with statistical relations in 1957.

How do sea-level change and coastal erosion together reshape continental margins?
Rising sea level submerges low coasts and intensifies storm-surge erosion, while regression exposes new tidal flats and terraces. Waves and longshore currents constantly move sediment, trimming headlands and filling bays into a dynamically balanced shoreline. Bird's Coastal Geomorphology systematically describes these interacting processes.

Why did great deltas like the Nile build land seaward for millennia yet tip into net retreat within recent decades?
A delta is a sediment budget: land builds when river supply exceeds losses to compaction, subsidence and sea-level rise, and drowns otherwise. Modern dams intercept most of the load — Nile sediment reaching the sea fell by more than ninety percent after the Aswan High Dam — while sand mining trims supply further. Natural compaction, groundwater-driven sinking and rising seas settle the account from below, pushing most major deltas into net drowning.

How do mountains form?
Mountain building (orogeny) mostly occurs where plates collide, folding, faulting, and lifting the crust into ranges—the Himalayas rose as India met Eurasia. Volcanism can also build mountains on its own.

Why do rivers pile up deltas where they meet the sea?
At the mouth the current spreads out and slows sharply, so it can no longer carry its load: coarse grains settle first, while clays flocculate on meeting salty water and drop out faster. Sediment keeps accumulating, pushing the shoreline seaward and forcing channels to split and swing, which shapes birdfoot or arcuate plains. The stronger the waves and tides, the more material is swept alongshore and the straighter the resulting coast.

Why is the Mississippi delta shaped like a birdfoot while others form smooth arcs or trumpet mouths?
Delta outline records which of three processes prevails: river supply, wave reworking, or tidal transport. River-dominated systems push sediment seaward through branching distributaries into protruding lobes, like the birdfoot Mississippi. Strong waves redistribute mouth sands alongshore into smooth arcs, as at the Niger and São Francisco. Vigorous tides scour channels back and forth, carving funnel mouths fringed with linear ridges, as at the Ganges-Brahmaputra.

What is the difference between physical and chemical weathering?
Physical weathering only breaks rock into smaller pieces without changing its minerals, through freezing, salt crystal growth, or thermal expansion. Chemical weathering reacts minerals with water, oxygen, and acids to form new or dissolved material, such as feldspar turning to clay. The two usually act together, controlling soil and sediment formation.
