What are elastic storage and specific yield of an aquifer, and how do they differ in timescale?

In confined aquifers, water is released mainly by elastic compression of the aquifer skeleton and the water itself—elastic storage—fast to respond but with a small storativity. In unconfined aquifers, pores drain by gravity—specific yield—which holds far more water but responds with a lag. Rapid head changes thus reflect elastic storage, while long-term yields depend on gravity drainage; this timescale contrast governs drawdown and sustainable extraction.

How do GRACE satellites estimate changes in groundwater storage from gravity measurements?

GRACE's twin satellites measure their separation to micron precision, inverting monthly Earth gravity-field anomalies. After removing glaciers, surface water, and atmospheric signals, the residual land gravity change reflects total water storage including groundwater, giving large-scale estimates where wells are absent.

Why does long-term overdraft of confined aquifers cause widespread land subsidence, and why is that subsidence essentially permanent?

Pumping lowers pore-water pressure, shifting the overburden onto the granular skeleton and raising effective stress. Sands compress mostly elastically and rebound as water levels recover, but clayey aquitards drain slowly; once effective stress exceeds the preconsolidation stress, platy particles rearrange into permanent plastic compaction. Even recovered levels cannot lift the ground back, and storage capacity is lost for good - California's Central Valley has sunk by nearly nine metres.

What is an aquifer, and how do porous and fractured aquifers differ?

An aquifer is a rock or soil layer that stores and transmits groundwater. Porous aquifers rely on spaces between grains like sand and gravel, while fractured aquifers depend on cracks and cavities in rock such as limestone or igneous rock, the latter being far more heterogeneous.

Why does land subsidence sometimes continue in cities even after groundwater pumping is sharply reduced?

Aquitards—low-permeability layers—drain and compact slowly as confined head drops, with a lag so their compaction can persist for decades after pumping stops. This delayed subsidence means sinking does not halt immediately when extraction ends, leaving long-term risk to infrastructure.

What is groundwater recharge, and what are the main recharge pathways?

Recharge is the process by which surface water infiltrates and replenishes an aquifer. Main pathways are precipitation infiltration, river and lake leakage, irrigation return flow, and lateral inflow where bedrock outcrops in mountains. Rate is controlled by climate, vegetation, lithology, and human activity.

What is a groundwater depression cone, and how does it form?

Sustained intensive pumping lowers the water table around wells, forming a funnel-shaped surface with the extraction center as the low point. When withdrawal persistently exceeds recharge, the cone expands and deepens—a hallmark of over-exploitation.

What is seawater intrusion, and why does coastal groundwater over-pumping trigger it?

Seawater intrusion is the landward movement of the saltwater–freshwater interface when freshwater pressure drops. Coastal over-pumping lowers the freshwater head, upsetting the balance so the saline wedge advances and contaminates wells, threatening drinking and irrigation supplies.

Why do confined aquifers produce artesian wells, and what role does the potentiometric surface play in this?

A confined aquifer sits trapped between impermeable layers, and its recharge zone lies at higher elevation, so its water stands under pressure greater than atmospheric. The imaginary surface joining the hydraulic heads everywhere is the potentiometric surface: wherever the land lies below that surface, drilling through the confining layer lets groundwater flow out unaided, or even fountain upward — an artesian well. Australia's Great Artesian Basin is the classic case, supplying stable water to the arid interior without any pumping.
