What is river discharge?
River discharge is the volume of water passing a cross-section per unit time, usually cubic meters per second, equal to cross-sectional area times average velocity. It varies with rain, snowmelt, and season and is key to water management.

In chronically over-drafted basins such as the North China Plain, why does land subsidence largely persist even after water tables stop falling and begin to recover?
Pumping lowers pore-water pressure and transfers overburden load onto the grain skeleton; the increased effective stress compacts clay layers essentially irreversibly, and managed recharge recovers only a minor elastic fraction of the deformation. Subsidence rates therefore slow once levels stabilize, yet most of the lost aquifer storage and land elevation remain gone.

Long after the rain has stopped, why can a river keep running for weeks on end, and how does recession-curve analysis tease the groundwater share out of the streamflow hydrograph?
Infiltrated rain percolates slowly through soil and fractures into aquifers, which then drain steadily through springs and channel beds to form the gentle tail of the hydrograph after the flood peak. Plotted on semi-logarithmic axes, this baseflow recession approaches a straight line whose slope encodes the aquifer's storage and transmissive behavior. Splitting the quick direct runoff from the sluggish groundwater component on that basis lets hydrologists estimate what fraction of each flood event came from each source.

Why is the Ogallala Aquifer crucial to US agriculture yet threatened by overdraft?
The Ogallala Aquifer underlies the North American Great Plains, holding Pleistocene-era groundwater that irrigates vast US wheat and corn belts. Recharge is extremely slow while pumping far exceeds natural replenishment, so water levels keep dropping. USGS studies show unsustainable depletion in parts of the region.

What is an aquifer, and how is groundwater replenished?
An aquifer is a porous rock or gravel layer that stores and transmits groundwater, acting like a natural underground reservoir. When surface water (rain or rivers) infiltrates downward and reaches the saturated zone, it is 'recharged.' Over-pumping or reduced recharge can deplete aquifers and cause land subsidence.

What is a watershed (drainage basin)?
A watershed is the area of land where all precipitation drains to a common river (or lake/estuary) and its tributaries, bounded by a divide such as a ridge line. It is the basic unit of natural hydrologic management, and activities upstream directly affect water quality and quantity downstream.

Why does water rise out of the ground unaided when a well taps a confined aquifer whose potentiometric surface stands above the wellhead, and what does this behavior owe to the elevation of the recharge area?
A confined aquifer sits sealed beneath an impermeable cap, so its water carries static pressure transmitted from a recharge zone at higher ground. When that zone stands far enough above the wellhead, the potentiometric surface tops the land surface, and drilling through the cap lets water climb the casing and spill freely. The available head equals the elevation difference between recharge area and wellhead, minus losses along the flow path.

When the same rainstorm falls on an urbanized basin, why is the flood peak higher and earlier than in a natural basin?
Impervious surfaces such as roads and rooftops push infiltration close to zero, so most rainfall turns directly into overland flow, and dense storm drains deliver it to channels within minutes. Together these effects sharpen the flood hydrograph, raising the peak discharge while moving it earlier in time. Modern basin management therefore relies on permeable paving, rain gardens, and upstream detention wetlands to restore infiltration and trim that peak.

What does the return period mean in basin-scale flood planning, and what limitations come with using this metric?
Derived from frequency analysis of peak-discharge records, a 100-year return period denotes a 1 percent chance of being exceeded in any given year, not an event recurring exactly once per century. The metric presumes hydrologic stationarity, yet urbanization, reservoir operation, and climate change keep shifting the statistical distribution of floods. Contemporary basin management therefore combines return periods with real-time rain-flood forecasting, inundation modeling, and resilience-oriented engineering instead of relying on them alone as design standards.

Why are flash floods so sudden and dangerous, and which terrains are most at risk?
A flash flood is a rapid rise in small streams and dry washes within hours of heavy rain, common in cities with impervious ground and steep canyons where infiltration is low and runoff is fast. It leaves little time to evacuate, and its danger comes from fast water and debris. NOAA's Weather Service and USGS both flag mountainous and urban areas as high risk.
