How does post-Last Glacial Maximum ice-sheet retreat manifest in glacio-isostatic adjustment (GIA)?
Heavy ice depressed the crust and displaced mantle; after melt the crust slowly rebounds while peripheral areas subside as mantle flows back—a see-saw isostatic response. Today Fennoscandia and Canada still rise, while some coasts subside, shaping regional relative sea level.

How is Antarctic Bottom Water formation linked to ice-shelf melt, and what does it mean for global ocean circulation?
Antarctic Bottom Water forms where dense coastal water sinks, a key part of the meridional overturning circulation. Freshwater from ice-shelf melt lowers density and hinders sinking, weakening bottom-water formation, which could slow global deep currents and disrupt heat and carbon transport.

What is the dynamic instability of ice sheets, such as marine ice-sheet instability (MISI) and marine ice-cliff instability (MICI)?
Marine-based ice sheets grounded below sea level can destabilize as warm water or shelf loss retreats the grounding line, speeding ice flow—marine ice-sheet instability (MISI). Very tall ice cliffs may also collapse under gravity, marine ice-cliff instability (MICI), dumping ice to the ocean far faster than melt alone predicts.

Which satellites currently monitor mass changes of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets?
NASA and DLR's GRACE and successor GRACE-FO satellites infer ice-sheet mass change from Earth's gravity field, while NASA's ICESat and ICESat-2 laser altimetry directly measure surface elevation—the two approaches complement each other.

What are the two main causes of global sea-level rise?
One is thermal expansion of warming seawater, the other is land ice—mountain glaciers and the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets—melting into the ocean. IPCC AR6 notes both contribute comparably, with global mean sea level already up about 20 cm since 1900.

What is an ice shelf, and why does it act as a buffer against sea-level rise?
An ice shelf is a thick platform of glacial ice extending from the land and floating on the sea. Because it already displaces seawater, its melt doesn't directly raise sea level, but by buttressing land ice it slows its flow; once it collapses, inland ice loss accelerates and sea level rises.

Why does Arctic sea-ice loss have an amplifying effect on global climate?
Sea ice has high albedo, reflecting sunlight; its loss exposes dark ocean that absorbs more heat, warming further and melting more—an albedo positive feedback. This Arctic amplification makes Arctic warming roughly 2–3 times the global average.

Why is the gas age of trapped air in an ice core often younger than the age of the ice enclosing it?
Snow must compact to a sealing depth before bubbles close off, while pores above remain open to the atmosphere. Thus the trapped air records slightly later atmospheric composition, creating a gas–ice age difference of up to several centuries in Antarctic cores that must be corrected when interpreting records.

What is an ice core?
