Why are there so many underground rivers on the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau?
Widespread limestone and plenty of rain let surface water flow through caves and underground channels, often reappearing as springs or resurgences.

Why do the giant tiankeng of South China's karst tend to occur in strings along underground river courses?
A tiankeng forms when the roof of an immense cave chamber in carbonate rock collapses catastrophically through to the land surface. Underground rivers corrode and erode rock along faults and bedding planes, progressively hollowing out the mountain until the unsupported ceiling fails in stages up to the surface. Because the collapse points track the buried river channel, tiankeng characteristically line up like beads on a string, with Xiaozhai Tiankeng in Fengjie, Chongqing as the classic example.

In the hills around Guilin, why do solution caves often occur stacked one above another in several levels?
Solution caves develop mainly where groundwater flows slowly yet dissolves rock continuously, close to the water table. As the crust uplifts and rivers incise, the water table falls, stranding older passages above the new phreatic zone while fresh cavities enlarge at lower levels. Repeated uplift-and-incision cycles leave behind storeys of passages recording successive water-table positions, so Guilin's multi-level cave systems preserve a cross-section of that history.

How did Guilin's hills-in-water landscape form?
Limestone here was dissolved by rainwater; the ground collapsed into towers and depressions that filled with water, creating the famous peaks-and-rivers scene.

Karst areas get rain, so why are they often short of water?
Limestone is full of cracks and caves, so rain quickly drains underground and the surface stays dry.

How do giant sinkholes suddenly appear on the ground?
Underground rivers dissolve limestone until the roof can't hold, then it collapses into a deep open pit—a sinkhole.

In a karst underground river system, how do sinkholes, sinking streams, and karst windows connect surface water with groundwater?
Sinkholes are points where surface water pours into the karst aquifer; when a river disappears along dissolution-widened fractures it becomes a sinking stream. Where a cave roof collapses and exposes a shaft, a karst window forms through which the underground river's level can be observed directly. As the dissolution base level lowers, subterranean piracy captures flow at ever greater depth and the pipe network progressively replaces the surface drainage.
