What is a jet stream?

A jet stream is a narrow, fast ribbon of westerly wind high in the atmosphere, with speeds exceeding 300 km/h. It lies above sharp temperature gradients at frontal zones and strongly influences surface storm tracks and aviation routes.

How does polar front theory explain the life cycle of mid-latitude cyclones?

Bjerknes proposed polar front theory in 1919, viewing mid-latitude cyclones as waves developing along the boundary between polar cold and tropical warm air masses. A cyclone grows along the front, spawning warm and cold fronts, peaks at occlusion, then fills. The theory founded modern weather-map analysis and forecasting.

Why do jet streams occur around 10 km up in the sky?

Jet streams sit near boundaries of very different temperatures (polar vs subtropical air); the large temperature gradient drives a strong pressure gradient, and with little friction aloft, a narrow fast westerly wind forms.

What is the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and how does it affect global climate?

ENSO is the periodic fluctuation of sea-surface temperature and atmospheric pressure in the tropical central-eastern Pacific: El Niño brings unusually warm waters and weakened trade winds, while La Niña brings the opposite. The term 'Southern Oscillation' was coined by Gilbert Walker in the 1920s, and the phenomenon shifts global rainfall and drought patterns through atmospheric teleconnections.

Why does the commonest solar halo have a radius of about 22°, and why is its inner edge reddish while its outer rim is bluish?

The 22° halo forms when sunlight refracts through randomly oriented hexagonal columnar ice crystals in the air. Rays crossing two crystal faces that meet at 60° concentrate near the minimum-deviation angle, about 21.8° for red light and 22.4° for violet, so a bright ring of roughly 22° radius encircles the Sun. Shorter wavelengths deviate more strongly and are displaced outward, leaving red on the inside and giving the halo its characteristic colour order.

How can a lightning discharge heat the air in its channel to about 30,000 K within milliseconds, hotter than the surface of the Sun?

Charge separation inside a thundercloud builds potential differences of hundreds of megavolts; once breakdown occurs, the leader carves a conductive channel only centimeters wide, and the following return stroke carries peak currents of roughly 20-30 kA. Forcing that current through such a tiny cross section deposits Joule heat fast enough to raise the thin air to about 30,000 K in microseconds, and the sudden pressure rise drives a shock wave outward. That shock is what reaches our ears as thunder.

What is the dew point temperature?

The dew point is the temperature to which air must cool at constant pressure to become saturated and begin condensing moisture, reflecting its actual water vapor content. A higher dew point means more humid air, and when air temperature drops to the dew point, fog, dew, or clouds form.

What is the Coriolis effect, and how does it affect winds and ocean currents?

The Coriolis effect arises from Earth's rotation: moving objects such as winds and currents are deflected to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere. It shapes global wind belts and ocean gyres and determines the spin direction of tropical cyclones (counterclockwise north, clockwise south).

What is a monsoon, and why is Asia's monsoon so strong?

A monsoon is a large-scale seasonal reversal of wind direction, mainly driven by land-sea thermal contrasts. Asia sits between the huge Eurasian landmass and the Pacific Ocean; in summer the land heats fast, forming low pressure that draws in moist ocean air, making its monsoon especially strong.

What is a monsoon, and why is the Asian monsoon so powerful?

A monsoon is a seasonal reversal of large-scale winds rooted in the huge thermal contrast between land and ocean that flips pressure patterns. Asia combines the towering Tibetan Plateau with the largest landmass, so summer heating creates a strong low that draws moist Indian Ocean air inland. Webster synthesized the Asian monsoon's mechanics and variability in 2006.

How does a tornado form, and why are mid-latitudes its hotspot?

A tornado develops from a mesocyclone within a strong thunderstorm, where updrafts and wind shear make warm-moist and dry-cold air rotate violently and stretch into a funnel. Mid-latitudes are where cold polar and warm tropical air masses collide, yielding the classic environment for supercells. Markowski and Richardson reviewed tornado-genesis physics in 2009.

What produces the ring of light at 22 degrees around the Sun or Moon, and why is it often taken as a sign of approaching rain?

Hexagonal prism ice crystals tumbling randomly in high cloud refract sunlight through two adjacent side faces, and the transmitted light peaks near the minimum deviation angle of about 22 degrees, drawing a bright ring with a sharp inner edge. Because refraction disperses wavelengths, the halo's inner rim appears reddish and shades outward through blue and violet. Cirrostratus sheets usually arrive ahead of an approaching frontal system, which gives folk sayings linking halos to imminent rain a real meteorological footing.

How does a stepped lightning leader open a discharge channel between cloud and ground step by step?

Collisional charging between graupel and ice crystals inside convective clouds accumulates electric fields reaching hundreds of kilovolts per meter between cloud base and ground. Once the local field nears air breakdown, streamers launched at the leader tip merge into a hot channel centimeters wide at tens of thousands of kelvin, probing downward in intermittent steps of roughly 50 meters. When the leader touches ground it triggers the return stroke, carrying instantaneous currents averaging about 30 kiloamperes; the channel flares brilliantly and drives the shock wave we hear as thunder.

How does wind form?

A tornado is a small, short-lived (minutes to an hour) violent spinning column spawned by severe thunderstorms, usually over land. A hurricane (tropical cyclone) is a large, long-lasting (days) rotating storm system that forms over warm ocean waters and can span hundreds of kilometers.

What causes lightning and thunder?

Inside a storm cloud, separated charges discharge through the air as lightning when the voltage is high enough, and the flash instantly heats the air so it expands explosively into the rumble we call thunder. Light travels faster than sound, so we see lightning before we hear thunder.
