What is Bowen's reaction series, and what does it explain?
Bowen's reaction series, formulated by Norman Bowen in the 1920s from experiments, shows the order in which minerals crystallize as magma cools: a discontinuous branch (olivine → pyroxene → amphibole → biotite) and a continuous branch (plagioclase shifting from calcium-rich to sodium-rich). It explains the mineral assemblages of igneous rocks and fractional crystallization.

What pattern of magma crystallization does Bowen's reaction series reveal?
Bowen's reaction series arranges minerals by falling crystallization temperature into two branches: a continuous series from calcium-rich to sodium-rich plagioclase and a discontinuous series from olivine toward quartz. It shows that as magma cools, minerals crystallize and separate in sequence while the residual melt evolves in composition. Bowen set this out in 1928 in The Evolution of the Igneous Rocks, founding igneous petrology.

What is the difference between cleavage and fracture?
Cleavage is a mineral's tendency to split along preferred weak directions into smooth planes; fracture is its irregular breakage when no cleavage direction is followed. Mica cleaves into sheets, while quartz typically shows a conchoidal fracture.

What is the 'rock cycle,' and what processes does it describe?
The rock cycle describes how rocks are continually transformed between Earth's interior and surface: magma cools to igneous rock, which weathers and erodes into sediments that form sedimentary rock, and both can be metamorphosed under heat and pressure, then melted back to magma. It links plate tectonics, weathering, and volcanism into one system.

How do intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks differ?
Magma that cools slowly underground forms coarse-grained intrusive (plutonic) rocks like granite; lava that cools quickly at the surface forms fine-grained or glassy extrusive (volcanic) rocks like basalt. Cooling rate sets crystal size.

Why is the silicate tetrahedron the basic building block of most crustal minerals?
The silicate tetrahedron, a silicon atom at the center and four oxygens at the corners, is the most stable unit given Earth's silicon- and oxygen-rich composition. By sharing oxygens they link into isolated, chain, sheet, or framework structures, yielding diverse minerals from olivine to feldspar to mica. Klein and Hurlbut's Manual of Mineralogy details these polymerization styles.

Under what temperature and pressure conditions does metamorphism alter rocks, and what are its main types?
Metamorphism rearranges a rock's minerals in the solid state under heating, pressure, or fluid action without melting, typically tens of kilometers underground. Contact metamorphism is driven by magmatic heat, while regional metamorphism accompanies deep burial and directed pressure in mountain belts. Bucher and Frey's Petrogenesis of Metamorphic Rocks catalogs the corresponding mineral assemblages.

What is the Mohs hardness scale?
The Mohs scale ranks minerals from 1 to 10 by their relative resistance to scratching, with talc softest at 1 and diamond hardest at 10. It helps rough field identification but is not a linear measure of absolute hardness.

How is a mineral defined, and what is the Mohs hardness scale?
A mineral must be naturally occurring, inorganic, solid, with a definite chemical composition and an ordered crystalline atomic structure. The Mohs hardness scale, proposed by Friedrich Mohs in 1812, ranks relative scratch hardness from 1 (talc) to 10 (diamond), where a higher number scratches a lower one.

What are the three main rock types classified by origin?
Rocks are classified by origin into igneous (formed by cooling of magma, e.g., granite, basalt), sedimentary (formed by compaction and cementation of fragments or chemical precipitates, e.g., sandstone, limestone), and metamorphic (altered from existing rock by heat and pressure, e.g., marble, schist). They transform into one another through the rock cycle.

What are the main differences between granite and basalt?
Granite is a light-colored, quartz- and feldspar-rich intrusive rock formed in thicker continental crust, cooling slowly so its grains are coarse. Basalt is a dark, silica-poor, iron- and magnesium-rich extrusive rock common in oceanic crust, cooling fast into fine-grained or glassy texture. Their compositional and tectonic differences reflect distinct settings.
