What are compound extreme events, and why are they harder to manage than single hazards?

Compound events occur when multiple extremes, such as heatwaves with drought, or storm surge with heavy rain, co-occur or follow one another, producing nonlinearly amplified impacts. Conventional single-hazard early-warning and defense systems poorly capture their combined effects, raising risk.

How do submarine-earthquake tsunami warning systems issue alerts within minutes?

The system uses offshore seismic networks to rapidly determine epicenter, magnitude, and fault type, and sea-level buoys to detect tsunami waves in real time, estimating arrival time and height at coasts. Because tsunami waves travel far slower than seismic waves, distant shores gain valuable evacuation time.

Why do slopes in a seismic region keep failing with landslides for years after a strong earthquake?

Strong shaking cracks, loosens, and damages slope-forming rock masses, leaving co-seismically fractured slopes far less intact than before the event. Rainfall then infiltrates along the new fissures, raising pore-water pressures and further degrading shear strength, so the rainfall threshold for failure drops sharply. Observations in the Wenchuan seismic zone show that landslide sensitivity to rain stayed markedly above pre-earthquake levels for roughly a decade.

How does prolonged drought increase the frequency of dust storms?

Drought reduces soil moisture and vegetation cover, leaving loose surfaces that strong winds easily lift into dust storms, which can travel far and affect air quality and snow or ice albedo. This is a classic hazard chain in arid and semi-arid regions.

Why do strong earthquakes often trigger chains of landslide disasters?

Ground shaking destabilizes slope materials instantly, triggering clustered landslides on steep, loose, or rain-saturated terrain; they can dam rivers into landslide lakes whose later breach causes floods. This earthquake-landslide-dam-breach chain amplifies the loss from a single hazard.

How can a large volcanic eruption affect global climate over the following year or two?

Eruptions inject sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere, forming sulfate aerosols that reflect sunlight and cool the surface by about 0.1 to 0.5°C while perturbing monsoons and rainfall. The 1991 Pinatubo eruption briefly lowered global mean temperature by about 0.5°C.

What components does a modern natural-disaster early-warning system generally rely on?

A typical system includes real-time monitoring networks (seismic stations, weather radar, water-level gauges), data transmission and model forecasting, and public alerting and response protocols. Shortening the warning-to-action gap is key to reducing casualties.

Why do typhoons drive dangerous storm surges along the coast?

A typhoon's strong winds and low pressure raise the sea surface anomalously; combined with astronomical high tide, seawater floods low-lying coasts and becomes one of the most destructive factors. Warning relies on tide models coupling storm track, pressure, and bathymetry.

Why do landslides stay unusually frequent in mountain regions for years after a major earthquake?

Strong shaking opens cracks and loosens rock and soil within slopes, sharply lowering the overall strength of hillsides. Rainfall after the quake infiltrates easily along these damaged surfaces and triggers fresh slides, while debris shed into gullies feeds years of post-seismic debris flows. More than a decade of monitoring in the Wenchuan earthquake zone shows that regional landslide activity took roughly ten years to decay back toward pre-earthquake levels.
