What controls the depth of the oceanic mixed layer and why does it matter for climate?

Mixed-layer depth is controlled by wind stirring, buoyancy flux (cooling and evaporation that make surface water heavier), and wave breaking, deepening in winter and shoaling in summer. It regulates the rate of heat and carbon exchange between ocean and atmosphere, a key variable in climate models.

What is an ocean front?

An ocean front is a narrow transition zone where two water masses of different properties meet, showing a sharp temperature and salinity gradient. It often brings strong vertical motion and rich biological aggregation, making productive fishing grounds and active weather zones. The meeting of the Gulf Stream and the Labrador Current is a classic example.

Is there a risk that the thermohaline circulation could shut down?

Climate models suggest that if global warming melts the Greenland ice sheet massively, freshwater input to the North Atlantic would lower salinity and density and weaken the sinking drive. This could slow the thermohaline circulation and alter European climate and global heat distribution. Most studies, however, see a complete shutdown in the near term as unlikely.

How does El Nino affect the frequency of typhoons in the western North Pacific?

In El Nino years the western Pacific warm pool shifts east, moving the convection center away from the western North Pacific, so genesis frequency there often dips slightly while tracks shift eastward. Changed vertical wind shear and sea temperature patterns can also make individual storms stronger. Research continues to refine this year-to-year relationship.

Why are marine microbes not a "dead end" in the food chain but rather the key that returns dissolved organic matter to the food web?

Phytoplankton exude large amounts of dissolved organic carbon (DOC); the classic view held that its uptake by bacteria short-circuited the chain. The microbial loop, however, shows that heterotrophic bacteria are themselves grazed by microzooplankton, returning carbon and nutrients to the main food web; grazing by microzooplankton is the core step that funnels bacterially fixed carbon into the zooplankton→fish energy flow, and viral lysis of bacteria and phytoplankton releases more DOC to drive the loop. The loop also modulates carbon export efficiency, because bacterial respiration keeps some carbon in surface waters, reducing the fraction of organic carbon that can sink to depth.

Why does adding trace iron to the ocean stimulate phytoplankton growth, and why is it controversial as a climate-engineering approach?

In high-nutrient, low-chlorophyll (HNLC) regions such as the Southern Ocean, surface nutrients are abundant but iron is scarce, so phytoplankton cannot use them; iron is a key cofactor in photosynthesis and nitrogen-fixation enzyme systems, and iron addition dramatically raises primary production—experiments such as IronEx II and SOFeX observed chlorophyll blooms. Controversy stems from the difficulty of quantifying net carbon drawdown and long-term sequestration: experiments show much of the newly fixed carbon is remineralized in the surface layer, with far less exported to depth than hoped. Possible ecological consequences (shifted species composition, toxic blooms, deep-water hypoxia) and weak regulatory oversight over open-ocean releases mean iron fertilization is not accepted as a climate-engineering tool.

What is a rogue wave (freak wave)?

A rogue wave is an isolated giant wave whose height greatly exceeds the surrounding waves and whose occurrence is far rarer than conventional statistics predict. It can arise from the superposition of several wave trains, the effect of currents and topography, or nonlinear processes during storms. It has historically caused ships to break apart suddenly and is an important topic in maritime safety.

What is the thermohaline circulation (the ocean conveyor belt)?

The thermohaline circulation is a deep-ocean current driven by differences in seawater temperature and salinity, often called the ocean conveyor belt. In high-latitude regions dense cold water sinks and slowly flows toward lower latitudes at depth before rising again. It cycles heat and carbon through the global ocean and has a major influence on long-term climate.

What exactly is ocean acidification, and why does it hurt shellfish and corals?

The ocean absorbs about a third of human CO2 emissions; the gas dissolves and forms carbonic acid, which releases hydrogen ions and lowers pH while consuming carbonate ions—that is ocean acidification. Shell-forming organisms and corals build their shells and skeletons from calcium carbonate; with fewer carbonate ions, calcification becomes harder and existing structures may even dissolve. Lab and field studies both show slower calcification under high CO2. Since the Industrial Revolution, surface pH has fallen by about 0.1 units, roughly a 30% rise in acidity, placing long-term stress on marine ecosystems.

What is ocean stratification and the thermocline?

The ocean is vertically divided by temperature and salinity into a surface mixed layer, a thermocline, and deep water, a structure called stratification. The thermocline is a thin layer where temperature drops sharply with depth and acts like a lid limiting exchange between layers. Stratification strength affects nutrient supply and vertical carbon transport.

Upwelling brings cold, nutrient-rich deep water to the surface, fueling large blooms of phytoplankton.

Why do corals bleach, and can bleached corals recover?

Zooxanthellae inside coral tissues supply most of the coral's energy through photosynthesis and give corals their vivid colors; when seawater stays unusually warm (about 1 C above the summer average for weeks) or under pollution and acidification, the algae are expelled or die and the white skeleton shows through—bleaching. If the stress ends quickly, corals can take up new zooxanthellae and recover; if it persists, they starve. Global marine heatwaves have repeatedly caused mass bleaching in recent years.

How does ocean circulation regulate Earth's climate?

Ocean circulation transports heat from low latitudes toward high latitudes and redistributes both heat and salt. It reduces the temperature contrast between the equator and the poles, keeping coastal climates milder. Changes in circulation can also trigger regional droughts and floods.

Why does coastal eutrophication trigger harmful algal blooms, and why are they harmful?

Agricultural runoff and sewage deliver excess nitrogen and phosphorus, causing explosive phytoplankton growth. Harm comes from oxygen depletion—nighttime respiration and post-bloom decomposition create hypoxic “dead zones”—while some species produce toxins that kill fish and shellfish and threaten food safety; dense blooms also shade out seagrass beds and other benthic habitats.

How do marine phytoplankton and zooplankton differ, and why are phytoplankton called the "grasslands of the sea"?

Phytoplankton are photosynthetic microalgae and cyanobacteria—the ocean's primary producers; zooplankton (copepods, krill) are tiny animals that graze on them. Phytoplankton fix roughly half of global photosynthetic carbon each year and underpin the entire fishery food web, hence the "grasslands of the sea."

How much does glacier melt contribute to sea level rise?

Melting of land glaciers and ice sheets is the other major source of sea level rise and currently contributes roughly as much as thermal expansion. The accelerating loss from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets is especially concerning. Satellite observations show that together they raise sea level by several millimeters per year in recent decades.

How can tsunami warning systems alert people before the wave arrives?

After an undersea earthquake, land seismic networks first locate the source and judge tsunami potential; deep-ocean buoys with pressure sensors detect the tsunami wave passing overhead and transmit data in real time to warning centers. Computer models combine magnitude and wave paths to estimate arrival times and heights for each coast, and alerts go out by broadcast and text. The 2004 Indian Ocean disaster struck before any system existed, prompting the global warning network in place today.

After a red tide fades, why do large fish kills sometimes appear on the seabed?

When the algae die and bacteria decompose them, they consume the water's oxygen; the resulting hypoxia plus lingering toxins kill fish and other life in patches.

What is the ocean's "biological pump," and how does it affect atmospheric CO₂?

Phytoplankton convert CO₂ dissolved in surface waters into organic carbon by photosynthesis; grazed by zooplankton, the carbon sinks as fecal pellets and dead organisms, some being sequestered in the deep ocean long-term. This transfers carbon from surface to depth, lowering the surface partial pressure of CO₂ so the ocean keeps absorbing atmospheric CO₂.

What is ocean thermal expansion?

Ocean thermal expansion is the increase in seawater volume and decrease in density as its temperature rises. Because the ocean has absorbed most of the excess heat on Earth, thermal expansion has become one of the main contributors to sea level rise. It lets the same mass of water occupy a larger volume and thus raises sea level.

What is the Gulf Stream?

The Gulf Stream is a powerful warm current in the North Atlantic that flows from the Gulf of Mexico along the east coast of North America into the North Atlantic. It carries tropical heat toward high latitudes and strongly influences the climate of Northern Europe. It is a major component of the global ocean circulation.

Why is seawater salty and what is salinity?

The salt in seawater mainly comes from rock weathering on land carried by rivers and from seafloor hydrothermal activity. Salinity is the total grams of dissolved salts per kilogram of seawater, averaging about 35 globally. Evaporation removes only fresh water, so salt accumulates and the ocean stays salty.

How does the North Atlantic Current affect Europe's climate?

The North Atlantic Current carries the warm water of the Gulf Stream onward to the northwestern shores of Europe. It makes northwestern Europe much warmer than eastern Canada at the same latitude, and keeps its winter ports largely ice-free. Without it, Europe's climate would be far closer to a harsh continental one.

What is the difference between sea ice and an iceberg?

Sea ice forms by the direct freezing of seawater and floats on the surface, growing and melting with the seasons. An iceberg is a chunk of fresh water broken off a land glacier or ice sheet that floats in the ocean. Icebergs can be enormous and pose a hazard to navigation.

What are tides and what mainly causes them?

Tides are the regular rise and fall of the sea surface, caused mainly by the Moon's gravitational pull stretching Earth's oceans, with the Sun adding a smaller effect. Spring tides near new and full moon occur when the Sun and Moon align and reinforce each other.

How does sea level rise affect coastal cities?

Sea level rise worsens storm surges and coastal erosion, making low-lying districts more prone to flooding. It also lets salt water intrude into underground fresh water and farmland, affecting drinking water and agriculture. Many coastal megacities are therefore investing in seawalls and drainage systems.
