What is the thermohaline circulation, and why is it called the 'global conveyor belt'?
Thermohaline circulation is a density-driven, large-scale deep ocean flow caused by differences in temperature and salinity; in the North Atlantic, cooling surface water sinks and travels south through the deep ocean before circulating globally and returning. It distributes heat and carbon across oceans and is vital to climate, with the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) at its core.

Why are submarine methane hydrates seen as both a potential energy source and a climate risk?
Methane hydrate is methane trapped in cage-like water molecules, stable in cold, high-pressure seafloor sediments. It represents a sizable natural-gas resource, but warming that destabilizes the seabed could release potent methane greenhouse gas. Kvenvolden reviewed its distribution and environmental significance in 1993.

Why is the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation so important for European climate?
The AMOC carries warm surface water northward, releasing heat to the atmosphere as it cools and sinks in the North Atlantic, giving Europe mild winters. If it weakens, Europe and the North American east coast cool and tropical rain belts shift. Rahmstorf and the IPCC AR6 warn that global warming may undermine this circulation.

How do ocean trenches form? Take the Mariana Trench as an example.
An ocean trench is a long, narrow, deepest part of the sea carved where one plate dives beneath another during subduction. The Mariana Trench formed where the Pacific plate subducts under the Philippine Sea plate and reaches over 11,000 meters deep.

Why are sedimentation rates on abyssal plains much slower than near shore?
Nearshore areas get direct river mud and lots of debris, so they build fast; the deep sea is far from land sources and relies on fine dust and plankton remains drifting down, accumulating only centimeters per millennium.

Why does upwelling create some of the world's most productive fisheries?
Upwelling occurs when wind drives surface water away from coast and deep, nutrient-rich cold water rises to replace it. Those nutrients trigger blooms of phytoplankton that support a vast food chain and large catches. Sverdrup described the dynamics of wind-driven upwelling in The Oceans (1942).

What is 'ocean acidification,' and what mainly causes it?
Ocean acidification is the decrease in seawater pH as the ocean absorbs excess atmospheric CO₂, which forms carbonic acid. Since industrialization the ocean has taken up about 30% of human CO₂ emissions, lowering surface pH from about 8.2 to about 8.1 and threatening calcifying organisms like corals and shellfish.

How are the great ocean gyres sustained in the general circulation?
A gyre is a large subtropical circulation shaped by trade winds, westerlies, and the Coriolis force, with wind-stress curl piling water at its center. Currents flow along pressure contours, and coastlines plus the Antarctic Circumpolar Current close the loop. Stommel gave a pioneering dynamical picture of the Gulf Stream in 1965.

How does ocean acidification occur, and how does it affect corals and shellfish?
Atmospheric carbon dioxide dissolves in seawater to form carbonic acid, lowering pH and carbonate-ion concentration, which is ocean acidification. Corals and shellfish need carbonate to build calcium-carbonate shells, and rising acidity inhibits calcification and can dissolve existing shells. Doney and colleagues noted in 2009 that this chemical shift is happening at a rate rare in geologic history.

How do ocean currents help regulate Earth's climate?
Wind-driven surface currents, such as the Gulf Stream, carry warm water from low latitudes toward high latitudes and return cold water toward the tropics, redistributing heat globally and moderating coastal and continental climates. Together with deep thermohaline flow they form Earth's 'heat conveyor.'

Why is seawater salty, and what is its average salinity?
Rivers carry dissolved salts—mainly sodium chloride—released by weathering of rocks into the ocean, while evaporation removes only pure water and leaves the salt behind, so salts accumulate over geologic time. The global average salinity is about 35‰ (roughly 35 g of salt per kg of seawater), varying with evaporation, precipitation, and ice formation.

Why is global sea level rising?
Sea-level rise mainly comes from two effects: warming oceans expand in volume, and melting land ice and ice sheets add water to the sea. This threatens low-lying coasts and islands with inundation and stronger storm surges.

How are ocean waves generated?
Ocean waves are mainly generated when wind blows across the surface and transfers energy to the water; stronger, longer, and farther winds make bigger waves. Giant waves like tsunamis, however, are caused by undersea earthquakes or volcanoes, not wind.

What layers is the ocean divided into?
By light and temperature the ocean is roughly split into the sunlit epipelagic, the dim mesopelagic (twilight), and the dark bathypelagic (deep), down to the seafloor. These layers differ sharply in light, temperature, and the life they host.

Which celestial body mainly causes tides, and why are there usually two rises and two falls per day?
The Moon's gravity is the main cause of tides, raising bulges on both the near and far sides of Earth and forming two tidal peaks. Earth's rotation carries most coasts past both bulges each day, giving roughly two rises and falls. The Sun's gravity adds to or subtracts from them, making spring and neap tides.

Why do atolls ring open lagoons? Young Darwin solved the circle from a ships deck.
Aboard the Beagle, Darwin proposed elegantly: reefs cling to slowly subsiding volcanoes, corals building upward to keep in sunlight as islands drown, leaving a ring around a lagoon. Subsidence theory predicted drilling would hit basalt beneath atolls — the 1952 Enewetak borehole confirmed shallow-water coral fossils stacked on volcano at kilometer depth, validating a century-old prophecy. Ice-age sea-level swings refined the model later, but the core logic stands: reef corals tolerate only shallow light water, so they must outgrow the sinking seafloor without pause.
