What is ocean acidification and by roughly how much has surface ocean pH fallen since preindustrial times?

Ocean acidification is the drop in seawater pH as the ocean absorbs atmospheric CO2 and forms carbonic acid. Since the preindustrial era surface pH has fallen from about 8.2 to about 8.1, a roughly 30% increase in hydrogen ion concentration, threatening corals and shell-forming organisms.

How does the deep ocean's global conveyor belt operate?

In the high-latitude North Atlantic, strong cooling and evaporation make surface water cold and salty, dense enough to sink as North Atlantic Deep Water; it flows south along the Atlantic bottom, rounds Antarctica into the Indian and Pacific Oceans, slowly upwells, and returns via surface currents—the global thermohaline circulation, named because temperature and salinity jointly set density. It delivers heat, oxygen, and carbon to the deep ocean worldwide; if large meltwater pulses from Greenland freshen the surface, the sinking could weaken or even shut down, with far-reaching climate consequences.

Why does the Moon recede from Earth every year, and how does tidal friction affect Earth's spin?

The Moon's tidal bulge does not point exactly at the Moon: because Earth spins faster than the Moon orbits, the bulge is dragged ahead of it, and its gravity pulls the Moon forward while braking Earth's rotation. Angular momentum transfers from Earth's spin to the lunar orbit, so the Moon recedes about 3.8 cm per year (measured by lunar laser ranging) while Earth's day lengthens by nearly 2 milliseconds per century. The Moon's own tidal lock, always showing the same face, arises from the same mechanism. Billions of years ago Earth spun much faster, with days of only about 20 hours or less.

Why do upwelling zones attract so many fish?

When coastal winds blow surface water offshore, cold deep water rises to replace it, carrying nitrates, phosphates, and other nutrients from the seafloor up into the sunlit zone. Phytoplankton bloom, and the food chain from zooplankton to small then large fish flourishes, creating famous fisheries off Peru and California. The rising cold water also keeps coastal climates cool and foggy.

Why do surface currents circle around in the oceans?

Steady trade winds push surface water westward while the westerlies push it eastward, and the Coriolis effect deflects flow right in the Northern Hemisphere and left in the Southern, so water swirls into giant clockwise or counterclockwise loops called gyres. Gyres carry heat from low to high latitudes and regulate climate; the warm, fast western boundary currents such as the Gulf Stream and Kuroshio are their most striking parts. Gyres also concentrate floating debris into ocean garbage patches.

Why are tides especially large around the new and full moon?

Tides are driven mainly by the Moon's gravity, with the Sun adding a smaller contribution. Around the new and full moon the Sun, Moon, and Earth line up, so the two pulls combine into the largest tides, called spring tides. At the first and third quarters the Sun and Moon act at right angles and partly cancel, producing the smallest tides, called neap tides. Coastal shape also strongly affects how large the range becomes.

What role does the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) play in climate?

AMOC carries warm salty surface water northward, which cools and sinks at high latitudes and returns south as deep water—a key link in the global ocean conveyor belt. It delivers heat to the North Atlantic and Europe, regulates ocean carbon storage, and oxygenates the deep ocean. IPCC assesses it will very likely weaken this century, and in extreme scenarios could collapse on centennial timescales, profoundly altering regional climate.

Why do most coasts see two high tides a day?

The Moon's gravity pulls the water facing it into one high-tide bulge, while the centrifugal force of the Earth-Moon system raises a second bulge on the far side. As Earth rotates, any coastline passes beneath both bulges in turn, so high tide returns about every 12 hours 25 minutes—twice a day. Coastline shapes and seafloor relief modify the details of local tides.

Why is seawater layered from top to bottom?

Sunlight warms the surface, and wind mixes the upper layer to a uniform temperature, below which a sharp drop called the thermocline occurs. Density depends on temperature and salinity—cold, salty water is heavier—so the ocean stabilizes into a mixed surface layer, the thermocline, and deep cold water. The layering blocks vertical exchange, so oxygen and nutrients in deep water arrive mainly through currents and sinking. Ecologically, the ocean is also zoned into sunlit, twilight, and midnight layers.

Why does the ocean stratify?

Seawater density is set by temperature and salinity, so stratification is really density layering. The sun warms the surface and wind stirs a mixed layer of nearly uniform temperature; below it temperature drops sharply as the thermocline and salinity as the halocline, and together these make the pycnocline. With light water over dense water, anything that mixes vertically has to work against buoyancy, so exchange is weak and the oxygen and nutrients of the deep water struggle to return upward. The structure is not the same everywhere: in winter at high latitudes the surface becomes cold and salty and sinks, and convection punches through the thermocline, which is where the deep water is renewed; and where a river mouth delivers a lot of fresh water, salinity takes over as the control on the layering.

Why does the Gulf Stream make winter in Western Europe so much milder?

The Gulf Stream carries warm Caribbean water up the US East Coast and, as the North Atlantic Current, still arrives off Western Europe far warmer than the surrounding sea at the same latitude. The warm water heats the air and the prevailing westerlies carry that heat inland, making London and Paris some 5-10 C milder in winter than eastern North America at the same latitude. It is part of the North Atlantic's surface circulation and transports roughly one hundred times the flow of all the world's rivers combined.

How do ocean currents affect the climate of coastal regions?

Warm currents such as the North Atlantic Drift carry low-latitude heat toward high latitudes, keeping nearby coasts mild in winter; cold currents such as the Peru Current cool coastal air and often bring aridity and fog. Currents thus reshape the global distribution of heat and precipitation.
