How does mantle convection drive plate motion, and what debates remain about the mechanism?
The mantle's internal heat from radioactive decay and residual warmth creates density differences that drive slow convection cells, carrying the overlying lithospheric plates. A debate persists over whether mantle drag, ridge push, or the slab pull of subducting plates dominates. Turcotte and Schubert's Geodynamics quantifies the relative contributions of these forces with viscous-fluid models.

What forces drive plate motion, and which is currently thought to dominate?
Plate motion is driven mainly by mantle convection (rising hot and sinking cold material), ridge push at mid-ocean ridges, and slab pull as dense, cooling plates sink at subduction zones. Most geodynamic studies conclude that slab pull—the downward pull of a sinking dense plate—is the dominant force.

What is Coulomb stress transfer between earthquakes? Illustrate it with the sequence of strong shocks on Turkey's North Anatolian Fault since 1939.
In a large earthquake, coseismic slip redistributes tectonic stress onto neighbouring faults: loaded segments are driven closer to failure while unloaded ones quiet down — this is Coulomb stress transfer. Calculations show that more than ten strong earthquakes on the North Anatolian Fault since 1939 progressed westward step by step, most falling within stress-increase lobes left by earlier events, revealing systematic fault interaction that informs medium-term seismic hazard assessment.

What kind of plate boundary is the San Andreas Fault, and why is it so earthquake-prone?
The San Andreas Fault is a transform boundary between the Pacific and North American plates, where blocks slide past each other without creating or destroying crust. Because the fault is not perfectly straight, stress builds up at bends and releases suddenly as earthquakes when friction is exceeded. Wallace and colleagues cataloged its slip history in detail.

What is a subduction zone, and how does it shape continental margins and volcanic arcs?
A subduction zone is a boundary where a denser oceanic plate dives beneath another plate at a trench, and the water it carries lowers the melting point of the overlying mantle wedge, triggering arc magmatism. The Andean margin of South America is an example where oceanic lithosphere subducts under continental crust to form a volcanic arc. These boundaries also generate the planet's largest earthquakes and tsunamis.

Mid-ocean ridges are divergent boundaries where upwelling mantle melts by decompression, and magma intrudes and erupts to form fresh basaltic crust. New crust is carried sideways by seafloor spreading and, as it cools, records magnetic reversals as symmetric stripes. Macdonald described the ridge's tectonics and hydrothermal activity in detail in 1986.

Wegener noted that the coasts of South America and Africa fit together like puzzle pieces, and that the two continents share matching rock strata, fossils (such as the extinct reptile Mesosaurus), and ancient climate evidence (such as glacial deposits). He proposed the idea in 1912 and developed it in his 1915 book 'The Origin of Continents and Oceans,' laying groundwork for later plate tectonics.

Porphyry copper deposits occur almost exclusively in magmatic arcs above subduction zones, whereas SEDEX lead-zinc deposits sit within rift-basin successions—what dictates this tectonic specificity?
Fluids liberated by the dehydrating slab metasomatize the mantle wedge, ferrying copper and molybdenum into shallow felsic chambers; saline magmatic fluids exsolved there then precipitate metals in fracture stockworks atop the porphyry intrusions, aligning deposits as belts along convergent margins. SEDEX ores instead reflect extension: growth faults vent metalliferous brines into seafloor brine pools where sulfides settle syntemporaneously with basin fill, confining them to passive-margin or back-arc sequences.

How does a river's longitudinal profile record crustal uplift? What are knickpoints, and what do they reveal about fault activity?
Where the land rises steadily, a river must cut down to keep its route to base level, so the bed gradient adjusts to the rock-uplift rate and the profile turns convex, its steepness index tracking uplift. Fault movement oversteepens the bed into a knickpoint, which then sweeps upstream like a wave of erosion, stranding gentle terraces downstream. Measuring the heights and positions of knickpoints and terraces lets us date fault movements and estimate their vertical throw.

Seafloor rocks record magnetic flips like tape, symmetrically striped — how did this clinch continental drift?
When lava cools, its magnetic minerals freeze aligned with the ambient geomagnetic field. In 1963 Vine and Matthews proposed that if mid-ocean ridges keep erupting new crust and convey older seafloor symmetrically outward, recurring geomagnetic reversals would stripe the seafloor into mirror-image normal and reversed bands centered on the ridge. Ship-towed magnetometer profiles soon mapped those zebra stripes, and spreading rates computed from stripe widths matched the geomagnetic polarity timescale calibrated by radiometric dating of land lavas — seafloor spreading became measurement, continental drift gained its mechanism, and plate tectonics was born.

What are tectonic plates?
Tectonic plates are the large, rigid slabs into which Earth's lithosphere is broken; they float on the slowly flowing asthenosphere beneath. Their slow motion shapes the distribution of continents, oceans, and mountains.

How do oceanic and continental crust differ in composition, density, and thickness?
Oceanic crust is mostly basaltic, denser (about 2.9–3.0 g/cm³), thinner (about 7 km), and geologically young. Continental crust is richer in granitic rocks, less dense (about 2.7 g/cm³), thicker (about 30–50 km), and can preserve rocks billions of years old.

(Ring of Fire)?
What is the 'Ring of Fire'?
The Ring of Fire is a horseshoe-shaped belt around the edges of the Pacific Ocean where many plate boundaries meet, making volcanoes and earthquakes extremely frequent. The USGS notes that about 75% of the world's active volcanoes and about 90% of its earthquakes occur there.
