Why can't we drink seawater, and what makes desalination hard?
Seawater is too salty and makes the body lose water. Desalination removes salt (by reverse osmosis or distillation) but uses a lot of energy, so it is costly.

Why do deep-sea black smokers form metal deposits?
Seawater seeps down through fissures at mid-ocean ridges, is heated to hundreds of degrees by magma below, and dissolves sulfur and metal ions into a hot hydrothermal fluid. When this fluid vents into cold seawater, metal sulfides precipitate instantly and build black-smoker chimneys. Massive sulfide deposits created by these systems are rich in copper, zinc, gold, and silver and are an important potential mineral resource; many layered metal ores on land likewise record ancient seafloor hydrothermal activity.

How do coal and oil form, and why are they called fossil fuels?
Coal comes from plant remains piled in swamps hundreds of millions of years ago; buried and squeezed, they pass through peat, lignite, bituminous, and anthracite stages as carbon concentrates. Oil and natural gas come mainly from marine plankton that sank to the seafloor, were buried in oxygen-poor sediment, and were cooked so their organic matter matured into hydrocarbons that migrated into porous reservoir rock. Because all derive from ancient life, they are called fossil fuels—forming over millions of years but consumed in centuries.

The deep seabed is paved with potatoes? Which future metals hide inside manganese nodules?
Manganese nodules are million-year masterworks: iron-manganese oxides adsorb nickel, cobalt, copper and rare metals layer by layer from seawater and pore waters, growing millimeters per million years around cores; the Clarion-Clipperton Zone likely holds more of these metals than all known land deposits combined. EV batteries put nodules center stage since they concentrate battery nickel-cobalt-copper-manganese exactly. The fight is equally large: abyssal ecosystems fragile and unmapped, sediment plumes from collectors could bury communities, and the International Seabed Authority still writes mining rules — a future resource card racing commercial clocks against unknown science.
