How do magnetic stripes on the seafloor prove seafloor spreading?

Basalt erupting at mid-ocean ridges contains magnetic minerals that lock in the direction of Earth's field when they cool below the Curie point. Because the geomagnetic field has reversed many times, newly formed crust records each flip, leaving symmetric stripes of normal and reversed polarity on both flanks of the ridge, like a tape recording. Maps of seafloor magnetic anomalies show stripes getting older away from the ridge, exactly as seafloor spreading predicts—one of the strongest confirmations of plate tectonics and independent proof of the reversal history paleomagnetism had predicted.

What is slab rollback?

A subducting slab is colder and denser than the mantle around it, so its negative buoyancy drags it downward. When that pull outruns the rate at which convergence feeds plate into the trench, the trench and the magma arc attached to it migrate oceanward - that is slab rollback. Rollback opens space behind the upper plate: the arc is stretched and thinned, mantle rises and melts by decompression, a back-arc basin forms, and the dip of the slab and the distribution of its earthquakes adjust accordingly. Rollback is not the only way to open a back-arc basin, however, since mantle convection and trench-parallel drag can stretch it too; and when the two rates change balance, the trench turns from retreating to advancing.

What is a mid-ocean ridge?

A mid-ocean ridge is the global chain of submarine mountains built along divergent plate boundaries: as mantle rises it melts by decompression, and the basalt is added to both sides as new oceanic crust, so the flanks mirror each other in age and shape and the magnetic stripes spread symmetrically outward. It is the longest mountain chain on the planet, long enough to wrap the Earth more than once, yet nearly all of its axis lies deep beneath the sea, with Iceland one of the rare places where it breaks the surface. Two confusions to avoid: a mid-ocean ridge need not sit in the middle of its basin, since the East Pacific Rise lies off-centre in the Pacific; and its axis is stepped into segments by transverse transform faults, which do not spread themselves.

What evidence did Alfred Wegener marshal for continental drift?

In 1912 Wegener proposed continental drift, citing the jigsaw fit of Atlantic shorelines; continuous rock belts and strata across Brazil and West Africa; identical fossils on now-separated continents, including the Glossopteris flora and the freshwater reptiles Mesosaurus and Lystrosaurus; glacial striations implying a single Gondwana ice sheet; and paleoclimate markers such as coalfields and evaporites inconsistent with present latitudes. These geometric, stratigraphic, biologic, glacial, and climatic lines of evidence all pointed to formerly connected continents. Critics objected mainly because Wegener lacked a convincing driving force; only in the 1960s did plate tectonics supply the mechanism, and continental drift was finally vindicated.

Why are the Hawaiian volcanoes progressively younger toward the southeast?

A mantle hot spot sits fixed beneath the Pacific plate; a deep mantle plume feeds magma while the plate drifts northwest, so the plume lights volcanoes at new positions. The northwestern islands are therefore the oldest and most eroded, while Kilauea in the southeast is youngest and still erupting. The direction and age gradient of the chain give direct evidence of plate motion direction and speed: Kauai last erupted about 5 million years ago while the newest volcano is active today.

How does plate tectonics feed back on global climate?

Plate tectonics alters climate through several paths: mountain building accelerates silicate weathering, which consumes atmospheric CO2 and buries carbon in the ocean—a long-term cooling mechanism; the rise of the Isthmus of Panama cut off equatorial flow between the Atlantic and Pacific and likely helped trigger Northern Hemisphere glaciation; and uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and Himalaya intensified the Asian monsoon, reshaping global circulation. Operating on tens of millions of years, these tectonic changes are major drivers of deep-time climate swings.

Why does an oceanic plate sink into the mantle at a trench, and what happens along a subduction zone?

Oceanic plates are colder, denser, and heavier than the asthenosphere below, so they bend and sink into the mantle at trenches like a conveyor belt. As the slab descends it releases water, triggering melting that feeds island-arc volcano chains, while friction between plates generates frequent earthquakes. The famous Pacific Ring of Fire is exactly a chain of such subduction zones.

How fast do tectonic plates move, and how do scientists measure it?

Plates move at roughly the speed fingernails grow, about 2-10 cm per year, yet over millions of years that adds up to thousands of kilometers of displacement. Scientists use the Global Positioning System (GPS) to record coordinates at stations fixed on plates year after year; the tiny annual shifts reveal each plate's direction and speed, corroborated by satellite ranging and magnetic stripes on the seafloor. GPS measurements have turned continental drift from a theory into directly observable reality.

What drives mantle convection, and how does plate motion relate to it?

Convection is driven by internal heat—radiogenic decay and heat from the core—so material rises when hot and sinks when cooled and denser. Lithospheric plates are the cold boundary layer atop the convection cell, created at ridges and sinking back into the mantle at subduction zones; the modern view holds that the negative buoyancy of subducting slabs (slab pull) is the main driving force of plate motion.

Mid-ocean ridges are called seafloor factories — how exactly does seafloor spreading work?

At a mid-ocean ridge, magma rising from the mantle erupts along the rift, cools into new basaltic crust, and pushes the older seafloor aside. Spreading proceeds at roughly 2-5 cm per year, matching the steady separation of the coasts on either side of the Atlantic. New crust forms at the ridge and old crust is consumed at subduction zones, so ocean basins continually renew themselves.

What is a transform fault?

A transform fault is a plate boundary whose two sides only slide horizontally along its strike. It commonly cuts mid-ocean ridges into offset segments, and quakes along it are shallow with little vertical movement, so it builds no mountains and has no deep-focus earthquakes. It is easily mistaken for an ordinary strike-slip fault: real displacement happens only between two adjacent ridge segments, because outside them both sides move in the same direction, so the huge offset on a map is an appearance, not the actual amount of slip. The San Andreas fault is a ridge transform segment extended onto a continent.

What drives plate motion?

Mantle convection sets the background, but the forces that move plates come mostly from the plates themselves: a cold, dense slab sinks at a trench and drags the plate behind it, which is slab pull, while the mid-ocean ridge stands high and the young crust slides gravitationally outward, which is ridge push. Slab pull is generally held to be the strongest, which is why plates with a long subduction zone at their edge move fastest, a few centimetres a year, the same order as fingernail growth. The confusion to avoid is treating convection as a conveyor belt that drags the lithosphere along: convection only carries heat, gravity does the direct work, and basal drag can even act as resistance.

What is the difference between the lithosphere and the asthenosphere, and why can plates move across the asthenosphere?

The lithosphere is the rigid outer shell made of the crust plus the stiff top of the mantle, about 100 km thick or more. Beneath it lies the asthenosphere, where rock approaches its melting point and deforms by slow creep. Tectonic plates are pieces of lithosphere that drift like rafts across the asthenosphere, because that layer, though still solid, can flow over long timescales, supporting and carrying the plates above it.
