Why is a rocket nozzle shaped like a converging-diverging (de Laval) nozzle?

Gas reaches the speed of sound at the throat and then expands in the diverging section to supersonic speed, efficiently converting pressure into a fast forward jet for greater thrust.

What causes rocket pogo oscillation, and why can it endanger an entire vehicle?

Pogo is a closed loop between structure and propulsion: longitudinal elastic vibration modulates propellant pressure at the pump inlet, that inlet variation modulates thrust, and the thrust pulsation re-excites the longitudinal mode, so amplitude can grow explosively within seconds when the phase relationship is regenerative. Saturn V first-stage and Gemini-Titan flights both showed pronounced longitudinal oscillation, which at high amplitude can damage structure, wreck engines or leave the crew unable to operate controls. The standard fix is a gas-filled accumulator in the oxidizer or fuel feedline that retunes the line's effective compliance and resonance, decoupling propulsion response from the structural mode.

Why do spacecraft use parachutes for landing in some cases but retro-rockets in others?

Parachutes rely on atmospheric drag, so they work only where there is thick air like Earth or Mars; with no atmosphere or for precise soft landings such as on the Moon, retro-rockets firing downward are required.

What is a supersonic shock wave and how does it affect aircraft?

When an object exceeds the speed of sound, pressure disturbances ahead cannot disperse in time and pile up into a shock wave with abrupt jumps in pressure, temperature, and density. Shock waves cause strong wave drag and aerodynamic heating and demand extra structural strength.

What is aerodynamic heating and why do leading edges get extremely hot at hypersonic speed?

At hypersonic speed, compressed and viscous air converts kinetic energy to heat, with boundary-layer temperature rising roughly with Mach squared. At the sharp leading-edge stagnation point the flow nearly stops, dumping all kinetic energy into heat, so it gets hottest there.

Why is a staged-combustion rocket cycle more efficient than a simple gas-generator cycle, and what is the cost?

A gas generator burns some propellant just to dump it, wasting energy; staged combustion sends all fuel-rich gas back to the main chamber to burn fully, raising specific impulse. The cost is very hot, high-pressure preburners and turbines—complex and demanding to build.

Why do Mars probes take a long elliptical route instead of flying straight there?

Once its engines shut off, a probe flies only under solar gravity along an ellipse with the Sun at one focus. A Hohmann transfer picks an ellipse whose perihelion touches Earth's orbit and aphelion touches Mars': the first burn accelerates the probe onto the ellipse, and at aphelion a second burn circularizes it into Mars orbit. It is the long way around, but the sum of the two burns' velocity changes (delta-v) is the minimum possible, saving enormous fuel. The cost is 6-9 months of flight time, and launch windows recur only every 26 months because Earth and Mars must be in the right relative positions.

Re-entering at 7.6 km/s, why doesn't a spacecraft burn to ash?

The extreme heat of re-entry comes mainly not from friction but from shock compression: at hypersonic speed the vehicle shoves air ahead of it, and behind the bow shock the air is adiabatically compressed to thousands of degrees, then heats the surface. The Space Shuttle's silica tiles block heat with very low thermal conductivity; crew capsules instead use ablative shielding — phenolic resin chars, melts, and vaporizes, absorbing and carrying heat away while the ablator sacrifices itself to protect the interior. From Mercury and Apollo to Shenzhou, capsules chose ablation: simple and reliable, though not reusable.

What is aeroelasticity, and why must a wing at high speed be stiff yet not too stiff?

How can Voyager's signal still reach Earth from over 20 billion kilometers away?

Deep-space links use narrow radio beams and extreme receiver sensitivity. Voyager transmits about 20 watts at X-band near 8 GHz; the signal fades as the square of distance and arrives at Earth at roughly 1e-19 watts, yet NASA's 70-meter antennas accumulate those few photons, and channel coding and error correction recover data from a signal far below the noise floor. With a one-way light time of over twenty hours, ground stations must also hand the spacecraft over across the three Deep Space Network (DSN) sites as Earth rotates.

Ion thrusters produce only tens of millinewtons of thrust, so why do deep-space missions favour them?

Electric propulsion accelerates xenon or similar propellant electrostatically to exhaust speeds of 20–40 km/s, an order of magnitude above chemical rockets, so by the Tsiolkovsky equation the propellant mass for a given velocity change drops sharply and specific impulse exceeds 3000 s. Thrust is tiny but can run for thousands of hours or years, accumulating small accelerations into several km/s of delta-v, which suits drag-free deep-space cruise and satellite station keeping. The costs are large solar arrays and power processing units, slow acceleration unusable for quick escape manoeuvres, and grid erosion by ion sputtering limiting operating life.

Why doesn't the ISS fall, and what order of orbital speed does it have?

Why does cockpit human-factors design place such emphasis on attention allocation and information display?

Cockpit human-factors engineering aims to let pilots acquire information and make decisions quickly and accurately under heavy workload, preventing errors caused by confusing displays or awkward controls. Design essentials include grouping instruments by importance, keeping the primary flight display intuitive and consistent, tiering alerts by urgency, giving controls shape and location coding that match muscle memory, and providing redundant display paths to reduce misreading. A large share of accidents traces to human-machine interface failures, which is why agencies such as the FAA make human factors a key part of airworthiness certification.

With no air to push against in space, how can a rocket still accelerate?

A rocket accelerates by conserving momentum, needing no external medium. Fuel reacts in the chamber into hot high-pressure gas, which the nozzle accelerates and ejects rearward; the expelled gas carries backward momentum, and momentum conservation forces the rocket to gain an equal and opposite forward momentum. Thrust equals the mass flow rate times the exhaust velocity, and the convergent-divergent nozzle exists precisely to push the gas past the speed of sound and maximize that velocity.

Where do oxygen and water on a space station come from?

In orbit a station cannot import air, so it must recycle. Oxygen comes mainly from electrolyzing water, which also yields hydrogen; carbon dioxide is captured by molecular sieves and reacted with that hydrogen in Sabatier reactors to make water and methane, and the water returns to electrolysis — a closed oxygen-hydrogen-water loop. Urine and condensed moisture are distilled and reverse-osmosed into drinking water. Only food cannot be regenerated and arrives by cargo ship. This Environmental Control and Life Support System gives the station over 90% water self-sufficiency.

The white cloud is mostly tiny water droplets from super-cold liquid oxygen or fuel condensing in warm air, plus steam from water sprayed to cool the pad. It's water vapor, not the fuel itself.

Why can an airplane fly?

An airplane wing is curved on top and flatter below, so air moves faster over the top and creates lower pressure there, producing upward lift. More precisely, the wing's angle of attack and the circulation around it deflect the airflow downward; by Newton's third law this produces a reaction force. When lift exceeds the plane's weight, the aircraft can leave the ground.

How quickly must a crewed spacecraft's launch abort system pull the crew away from a failing rocket?

An abort system must ignite within a fraction of a second of detecting failure, with solid motors delivering tens of tonnes of thrust for two or three seconds to accelerate the capsule away at roughly 7–10g and several hundred metres clear before the tower is jettisoned and parachutes deploy for a water or land landing. Such urgency exists because a liquid rocket deflagration expands into a fireball within seconds, and a low-altitude abort must still leave enough altitude for canopies to inflate. The 1983 Soyuz T-10-1 pad fire, where the escape system saved both crew members, remains the concept's clearest practical demonstration.

Why don't satellites fall down?

A satellite moves around Earth at high speed so that Earth's gravity exactly provides the centripetal force needed to curve its path. Because the upper atmosphere is extremely thin, almost no drag slows it down, so it stays in orbit for a long time.

Why do rockets go straight up at launch and then tilt over?

Going straight up first quickly clears the dense, drag-heavy lower atmosphere; then it tilts to build the horizontal speed needed to orbit the Earth.

What is the sound barrier?

The sound barrier is the sharp rise in aerodynamic drag an aircraft meets as it approaches the speed of sound, once thought impossible to break. Modern planes with swept wings and powerful engines can exceed the speed of sound in supersonic flight.

What propels a rocket?

A rocket is propelled by ejecting gas backward at high speed, gaining forward thrust by Newton's action-reaction principle. It carries both fuel and oxidizer, so it works in space where there is no air.
