Why are Indian stepwells dug so deep?

In arid lands they reach deep groundwater; the steps also cool the air and serve as sacred public space.

How did ancients bind stone without cement?

Ancient builders had three routes. The first was tight dry masonry: blocks were ground to fit one another, load was carried by self-weight and friction, and mortar only filled joints and spread stress, as in the closely joined facing stones of the pyramids. The second was lime mortar: quicklime was slaked into a paste, and on the wall it absorbed carbon dioxide and hardened by turning back into calcium carbonate. The third was composite mixes: sticky-rice broth stirred into slaked lime made a tougher mortar with a better grip on the interface, and Roman concrete, lime mixed with volcanic ash, could keep hardening under seawater. The catch is that lime mortar is water-sensitive and carbonation creeps only inward from exposed surfaces, so the core of a thick wall stays soft for a long time.

Why is the Zhaozhou Bridge a single open-spandrel arch?

Why does Roman concrete last 2,000 years in the sea?

Volcanic ash plus lime forms minerals that actually strengthen and self-heal when hit by seawater.

How were the pyramid's huge blocks lifted so high?

Why do Japanese wooden temples (like Horyu-ji) resist quakes?

How did the Great Wall's beacon towers communicate?

By day they burned smoke, by night lit fires; the number signaled the threat, relayed tower to tower.
