Why is a thin eggshell hard to crush by squeezing?
The arched shell spreads pressure along its curve, so even squeeze load is strong; only a point load breaks it.

Why should you worry more once a non-stick pan is scratched?
Flaking loses the non-stick and may be ingested; overheating releases fumes—not that the pan is poisonous, but misuse is risky.

Why can thin paper as honeycomb or corrugation bear big loads?
Bending leaves the middle of a section nearly unloaded and puts the work on material far from that neutral surface. Corrugation and honeycomb stand two thin skins apart so the skins take tension and compression while the near-air core only carries shear and props them against wrinkling. A skin's contribution grows with the square of its distance from the neutral surface: skins three times farther apart make the same paper roughly nine times as bend-resistant, with little added weight. The saving is per unit weight—a solid slab of the same volume is stiffer—and the panel is strong only across its corrugations, since sideways compression, dents and damp fail first.

Why does freezing water crack rock and pipes?
When water freezes its volume grows by roughly 9%, and water in rock pores or a pipe cavity is confined, so expansion with nowhere to go becomes pressure: as ice swells the wall is loaded in tension, yet rock and cast iron are far weaker in tension than in compression, so a crack tip is driven open with little force. Rising pressure also depresses the melting point of ice, so unfrozen water is squeezed toward the freezing front and ice lenses keep thickening; frost heave is a cumulative process of drawing water in and wedging, worked through cycle by cycle. The boundary is confinement: expansion that has somewhere to go bursts nothing, and pipes usually fail in the stretch sealed by an ice blockage.
