Why is driving a MOSFET completely different from driving a bipolar transistor?
A bipolar transistor is current controlled, so base current must flow continuously to keep it on. A MOSFET is voltage controlled, its channel governed by the gate field, drawing almost no steady current but presenting a gate capacitance of several nanofarads. For fast switching the driver must therefore source and sink large currents briefly to charge and discharge that capacitance, otherwise switching slows and losses soar, which is why dedicated gate-driver chips exist.

Why are LEDs driven with constant current rather than constant voltage?
LED current rises exponentially with forward voltage, and the forward drop itself falls as temperature rises. Fed from a constant-voltage source, a small temperature rise increases current and heating further, leading to thermal runaway that harms brightness and lifetime. A constant-current driver fixes the current at the design value and lets the voltage settle wherever it needs to, giving stable brightness, consistent colour temperature and longer life.

A transistor can amplify or switch; how do the two uses differ?
For amplification the transistor works in the active region, where collector current is roughly base current times gain and appreciable voltage and current coexist, so it dissipates noticeable heat while the output tracks the input proportionally. As a switch it jumps between cut-off and saturation, either barely conducting or dropping very little voltage, so losses are low. Digital circuits and motor drives want switching operation, while audio and sensor front ends use the active region.

Why is a diode connected in reverse across a relay or motor coil?
A coil is an inductor, and its current cannot change instantly. When the switch opens, the inductance tries to maintain current and generates a large reverse voltage spike that can destroy the driving transistor or upset nearby circuits. A reverse-connected freewheeling diode gives that current a path to circulate and decay slowly through the coil, clamping the voltage to about one diode drop.

Why are high-speed signals on a circuit board routed as length-matched differential pairs?
Differential transmission sends opposite-polarity signals on two traces and the receiver looks only at their difference, so common-mode noise coupled from outside subtracts away, giving strong immunity and low emission. The two traces must be equal in length, otherwise the signals arrive at different times, creating skew that breaks the differential symmetry and introduces a common-mode component. Spacing must also be controlled to keep the differential impedance constant and avoid reflections.

How are an analogue-to-digital converter's bit count and quantisation error related?
An ADC maps continuous voltage onto a finite number of integer steps, and the bit count sets how many steps there are, so twelve bits gives four thousand and ninety-six levels. Each step corresponds to the full range divided by the number of levels, the worst-case quantisation error is half a step, and every extra bit halves it. In practice the effective number of bits is limited by noise, reference stability and linearity, so a high nominal bit count does not by itself mean more accurate measurement.

Why is a small capacitor placed next to every chip's power pin?
A digital chip suddenly draws a burst of current when its clock switches, and because the supply trace has inductance, that step causes voltage droop and ringing. A decoupling capacitor right at the power pin acts as a small reservoir, supplying the transient current locally and confining supply noise to a tiny loop. That is why it must sit as close to the pin as possible, with the smallest possible loop area.

At the same wattage, why does an LED lamp emit far more visible light than an incandescent lamp?
An incandescent filament emits by thermal radiation: near 2700 K most of the spectrum sits in the infrared and under a tenth of the input energy becomes visible light, roughly 10-17 lumens per watt. An LED works by electroluminescence-electron-hole recombination in GaN quantum wells creates photons directly, then phosphors convert them to white-bypassing the heat-first route, so commercial devices deliver 100-150 lm/W or more, nearly an order of magnitude more light per watt.

Why must ordinary white LEDs excite a layer of yellow phosphor with a blue chip instead of emitting white light directly?
An LED die emits only the narrow band fixed by its material bandgap, and no efficient chip today radiates white light spanning the whole visible spectrum. The mainstream solution runs a gallium nitride blue chip near 450 nm against a cerium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG:Ce) phosphor: the powder absorbs part of the blue photons and re-emits yellow, and the leftover blue mixed with that yellow appears white. This down-conversion loses a little energy as heat through the Stokes shift, yet it delivers a simple, low-cost white source whose colour temperature and rendering are tuned by adjusting the phosphor recipe.

What do pull-up and pull-down resistors do in a circuit?
A digital input pin left unconnected sits at an undefined potential and can flip randomly from noise. A pull-up resistor ties the pin to the supply through a fairly large resistance so it defaults high, while a pull-down ties it to ground so it defaults low. Pressing a button pulls the pin to the other rail, giving a definite transition, and the resistor limits the current.

How does a Hall sensor measure magnetic field and speed without contact?
When current flows through a thin semiconductor plate and a magnetic field passes through it perpendicularly, the Lorentz force deflects the moving charges so charge piles up on the sides, creating a transverse Hall voltage proportional to field strength. Fitting a magnet to a shaft makes the sensor emit one pulse per revolution, and counting pulses gives speed. Being contactless and wear-free, it is widely used for brushless motor commutation, vehicle speed sensing and clamp current meters.

How does an optocoupler isolate signals between two circuits?
Inside an optocoupler an LED faces a phototransistor or photodiode across nothing but transparent insulating material, with no electrical connection between them. Input current lights the LED, the light crosses the insulator and the receiver turns it back into current, so the signal passes while the two grounds stay completely separate. Such devices withstand thousands of volts of isolation and are common in industrial I/O, switching-supply feedback and high-side gate drive.

What is the black ferrite ring clipped onto a data cable for?
It is a ferrite core, and clamping it around a cable presents high impedance to common-mode high-frequency current flowing the same way in all conductors while barely affecting the differential signal that goes out and back. In effect it adds a high-frequency resistance to common-mode noise, stopping the cable from radiating like an antenna and blocking external noise from entering. Because it only acts at high frequency it does not disturb normal data or power transmission.

What is PWM and why can it dim a lamp and set motor speed?
PWM stands for pulse width modulation: a square wave of fixed frequency whose high-level fraction of each period, the duty cycle, sets the average delivered power. Lamps and motors respond much more slowly than the switching rate, so they see the average, and brightness or speed varies smoothly with duty cycle. The switch only sits in the low-loss on or off states, making it far more efficient than dropping voltage across a resistor.

Why must electronic products pass electromagnetic compatibility testing?
Any fast-switching circuit radiates electromagnetic noise and conducts it along power lines, potentially disturbing radios, medical equipment or even aviation communication. EMC testing limits the emissions a product makes and also checks that it keeps working under external interference, electrostatic discharge and surges. Engineering fixes include metal shielding, filters, solid grounding and minimising the loop area of high-frequency currents.

Why do electrolytic capacitors have polarity, and why do they bulge?
An electrolytic capacitor relies on an extremely thin oxide film formed on the aluminium foil by the electrolyte as its dielectric, and that film is only maintained under voltage of the correct polarity. Reverse or excessive voltage breaks the film, leakage current soars and the electrolyte vaporises, raising internal pressure until the scored vent on the top bulges or bursts. High temperature accelerates electrolyte loss, so its life is very sensitive to heat and it is a frequent cause of equipment failure.

How do you read a resistor's value from its coloured bands?
On a common four-band resistor the first two bands are significant digits, the third is a multiplier telling how many zeros to add, and the fourth gives the tolerance. Colours map to digits in the order black zero, brown one, red two, orange three, yellow four, green five, blue six, violet seven, grey eight, white nine. So brown-black-red-gold means ten times one hundred, that is one thousand ohms, with five percent tolerance. Five-band resistors add one more significant digit for higher precision.
