How does life-cycle assessment (LCA) compute a product's cradle-to-grave carbon, and why is 'carbon footprint' often disputed?
LCA inventories the whole chain—extraction, manufacturing, transport, use, disposal—then sums emissions by factors. Disputes arise because boundaries, data and allocation methods differ, so the same product gets very different numbers.

What is anaerobic digestion and how does it turn organic waste into biogas and power?
Anaerobic digestion uses acidogenic and methanogenic bacteria in oxygen-free tanks to break organics into biogas, a methane-CO2 mix. The gas fuels engines or fuel cells for power, and the digestate becomes fertilizer—waste to energy.

In air pollution control, what reaction does wet flue-gas desulfurization use to remove SO2?
Wet desulfurization sprays limestone slurry that reacts with SO2 to form calcium sulfite, then air oxidizes it to stable calcium sulfate (gypsum). The gaseous pollutant is fixed into a solid byproduct for disposal or reuse.

At landfills, why use both a geomembrane and a leachate collection system?
Decomposing waste yields leachate rich in heavy metals and organics that would pollute soil and groundwater if it seeped. The geomembrane acts as an impermeable liner blocking downward flow, while the drainage layer above routes leachate to a collection tank for treatment—double protection.

Why is electrochemical CO2 reduction promising, and how does captured carbon become fuel?
Renewable electricity reduces captured CO2 with water on a catalyst into CO, formate, ethylene or even ethanol—storing surplus green power in chemical bonds. Captured carbon thus becomes recyclable feedstock instead of waste.

What is the activated sludge process and what do its microbes eat to clean water?
Activated sludge recirculates microbe-rich flocs into an aeration tank where organisms consume organics and nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, turning them into biomass and CO2. The sludge then settles in a clarifier and clear water flows out.

Why do city sewers sometimes smell or overflow when it rains?
Older combined sewers mix stormwater and sewage; heavy rain overwhelms capacity and manholes overflow. Anaerobic deposits release hydrogen sulfide and other foul gases that vent through the openings.

How do constructed wetlands use reeds, microbes and gravel to clean water, and where do they save versus traditional plants?
Water seeps through gravel and reed roots; the roots supply oxygen for microbes that degrade organics, while gravel and plants adsorb nitrogen and phosphorus. Relying on nature, it uses almost no power and is easy to maintain—good for villages.

What are biodegradable plastics and what breaks them down in nature?
These plastics have bonds microbes or water can cleave; in compost or soil, bacteria and fungi secrete enzymes that chop the chains into small molecules ending as water, CO2, and biomass. Many still need industrial composting to truly degrade.

Why do treatment plants bubble air into dirty water?
The bubbled air dissolves oxygen so aerobic microbes stay alive and eat the organic pollutants, cleaning the water. Without enough oxygen those bacteria die and treatment worsens.

Why are mangroves or reeds sometimes planted by coasts and factories—can plants 'eat' pollution?
Plants and their root microbes take up, degrade or trap heavy metals and nutrients, acting like a natural filter that cleans water and protects shores. They do not truly 'eat' pollution but intercept, transform or lock it away.

Why can some cups go in the microwave and others cannot?
Microwaves make water molecules in food vibrate and heat up. Metal cups reflect microwaves and can spark, so they're unsafe; glass and microwave-safe plastics let waves pass through without heating much, so they're fine.
