Why do skyscraper foundations dig tens of meters deep — how do engineers trust the ground?

Before building comes site investigation: drill cores test each soil and rock layer for bearing capacity. Soft ground cannot carry towers, so piles drive loads down to firm strata — table legs lengthened onto bedrock. Shanghai Tower's piles reach eighty-six meters. Foundations stay invisible yet decide safety: engineering lesson one respects the unseen.

Why are cranes so tall and strong?

A crane has a long arm and a heavy counterweight bottom, balancing like a seesaw. Its steel cables and pulleys lift loads as heavy as dozens of cars and swing them gently onto tall buildings.

Why dont skyscrapers fall in strong wind — do they sway?

Skyscrapers really do sway a little — on purpose, like roly-poly toys shedding wind's force. Engineers hide secret weapons too: Taipei 101 hangs a 660-ton steel ball that swings opposite the wind to cancel shaking. Foundations reach tens of meters deep like tree roots gripping rock.
