What does the alternate load path approach mean in progressive-collapse design?
Progressive collapse is the chain of failures that follows when a local element such as a ground-floor column is lost and redistributed load overwhelms its neighbours, spreading damage far beyond the initial harm, as at Ronan Point and the Murrah Federal Building. The alternate-path method notionally removes a key vertical element and checks whether the remaining structure can bridge the gap through beam continuity, catenary action and two-way slab behaviour, backed by adequate horizontal and vertical ties. The complementary route is specific local strengthening of key elements, and because this is an extreme accidental scenario the check permits large deformation and plastic response with reduced load factors.

Why did the London Millennium Bridge sway violently on opening day when pedestrians were merely walking normally?
Walking produces not only vertical force but a lateral component near 1 Hz, close to several of the bridge's lateral mode frequencies. Once the deck moved sideways slightly, pedestrians instinctively adjusted their gait to keep balance, synchronized with the motion and kept feeding energy into it — a pedestrian-structure interaction with positive feedback rather than simple resonance, amplifying abruptly once crowd size passed a critical value. The retrofit did not stiffen the bridge but added thirty-seven viscous dampers plus tuned mass dampers to raise lateral damping so the critical crowd size far exceeds real traffic.

In a suspension bridge, how does main-cable sag affect stiffness and steel use?
Low sag flattens the cable, raising horizontal tension so stronger anchors and more steel are needed, but deck stiffness and small deflection improve. High sag eases cable force and saves steel yet lowers stiffness and allows more live-load sag—a trade-off between economy and rigidity.

On soft soil, why use a pile-raft foundation instead of isolated footings for tall buildings?
Soft soil has low bearing capacity and high compressibility, so isolated footings cause excessive or differential settlement. A pile-raft combines a slab with piles reaching stiff strata: piles carry most load while the raft equalizes settlements, giving better overall stiffness and stability.

What is aeroelastic flutter and how do designers avoid torsional instability in long bridges?

Why does metal suddenly break under stress far below its strength when the load repeats?
This is fatigue failure. Under cyclic stress — even when the peak is far below yield — microcracks nucleate at stress raisers, and each cycle drives repeated slip in the plastic zone at the crack tip, advancing the crack a few nanometers per cycle. Once the crack reaches a critical length where the stress-intensity factor K exceeds the material's fracture toughness Kc, the remaining section snaps instantly with no macroscopic warning. Clam-shell fatigue striations on the fracture surface can reveal the crack's growth history. Aircraft, bridges, and turbine blades are therefore designed for infinite life or damage tolerance and are inspected on strict schedules.

When a member is slender, the stiffness to bend slightly is less than the urge to keep compressing straight, so it takes the 'easier' bowed path and buckles. Euler's formula shows critical load scales with bending stiffness and inversely with length squared.

Why do many supertall towers carry a huge steel ball near the top?
That is a tuned mass damper (TMD). When wind or a quake makes the tower sway, the suspended ball swings in opposite phase, and its inertia force absorbs the building's vibrational energy. The ball's mass and suspension length must be precisely tuned to the structure's natural frequency: the harder the building sways, the harder the ball swings back, canceling more motion. Taipei 101's damper weighs about 660 tonnes and cuts roof displacement by 30-40%.

Why does the thickness of concrete cover largely determine how long a reinforced concrete structure lasts?
Fresh concrete's pore solution is strongly alkaline and passivates the steel, so reinforcement barely corrodes while that environment survives. Atmospheric carbon dioxide carbonates the concrete inward and chlorides from seawater or de-icing salt diffuse inward, and both must cross the cover; since penetration depth grows roughly with the square root of time, doubling the cover multiplies the time to reach the bar by about four. Once the steel corrodes, rust occupies several times the volume of the consumed iron and splits the cover along the bars, accelerating attack, which is why codes prescribe minimum cover by exposure class together with limits on water-cement ratio and crack width.

How do rubber bearings at a building's base reduce earthquake shaking?
Base isolators softly decouple the building from the ground: layers of natural rubber alternate with steel shims, giving low horizontal but high vertical stiffness. During a quake the ground moves violently while the bearings let the whole upper structure translate slowly as a rigid body, filtering out the high-frequency shaking that would otherwise be amplified. Floor accelerations can drop by more than half and the structure stays elastic and undamaged — a fundamentally different strategy from stiffening the building to fight the motion.

How does a suspension bridge carry its deck through thin steel wires?
The main cable of a suspension bridge is made of thousands of steel wires twisted together, hanging from tower tops in a catenary (approximated as a parabola in design). Deck loads pass through vertical hangers into the cable, which then carries the force to the towers and the anchorages at both ends: tension flows along the curve, the towers take compression, and the anchorages resist the horizontal pull. The whole system works like a drawn bow, and the cable's strength sets how far the bridge can span.

Both cable-stayed and suspension bridges hang their decks — what is the difference?
A suspension bridge drapes two giant main cables across the whole span to carry the deck, anchoring the cable ends in huge anchorages; the towers take only vertical load, which is why it suits spans beyond 1000 m — like Akashi Kaikyo. A cable-stayed bridge runs many inclined stay cables directly from tower tops to the deck; the stay forces balance each other across the tower, so no anchorage is needed, the structure is lighter, and erection is faster, suiting spans of 300-1000 m like Sutong. In short: suspension cables deliver load to anchors; stayed cables self-balance at the tower.

Steel does not burn, so why must steel structures still be fire protected?
Steel's strength and stiffness fall steeply with temperature, with yield strength roughly halved near 550–600 °C, so members deflect and buckle under their design load, while restrained thermal expansion adds forces that push beams into columns and tear connections apart. Steel conducts heat well and sections are thin, so it heats far faster than concrete in a fire, and codes size sprayed coatings, boards or concrete encasement from the section factor (heated perimeter to volume ratio) and the required fire-resistance period. The World Trade Center investigation likewise identified dislodged spray-applied fireproofing, overheated sagging floor systems and failing connections as key links in the collapse sequence.

Slight flexibility lets the building dissipate wind energy through small motion instead of resisting with huge internal forces. If perfectly rigid, wind would create severe local stress concentrations and more damage, so controlled sway is a designed buffer.

What is prestress and why do prestressed concrete beams span farther?
Prestress applies a pre-compression—usually by tensioning high-strength steel strands—that offsets future tensile stress and delays cracking, so beams can be slimmer and span longer.

Why is rebar placed in the tension zone rather than the compression zone?
Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension, while steel takes tension well. Placing rebar on the tension side lets it carry the pulling stress while concrete handles compression, efficiently resisting bending moment.

Why do modern tall buildings often use a core-and-outrigger structural system?
The central core provides main lateral stiffness like a spine, and outriggers tie the perimeter columns to the core so the whole tower resists overturning from wind and quakes together.

Why are arches stronger than flat beams at carrying weight?
An arch routes the load down its curve to the supports as compression, and stone or brick resist compression far better than bending, so arches span wide openings without breaking.

Why test a scaled model in a wind tunnel before designing a supertall, and what can wind do to the building?
Taller buildings meet fiercer wind; a wind tunnel measures pressure on the facade and whether it twists and oscillates. Engineers then reshape the body—notches, openings—so wind slips around, cutting sway and noise.

Why must brickwork be laid with staggered joints instead of neatly aligned vertical joints?
Staggered bonding makes each brick bridge two bricks below, so a local load spreads outward at roughly 45 degrees over a wider area and the wall acts as one composite element. Aligned vertical joints instead create a continuous plane of mortar, which is far weaker than the units in tension and shear, so cracks run straight down that line and the wall loses the interlock that transfers shear between bricks. Masonry practice and codes therefore require overlapping patterns with laps typically at least about a quarter of a brick length, and corners and intersections are toothed with whole bricks to preserve continuity.
