Freeway ramp meters deliberately restrict vehicles from entering the mainline — why can such rationing actually reduce the total delay borne by all travelers?

Traffic flow has a critical density: once mainline density crosses it, flow destabilizes and capacity drops an extra five to ten percent, so metering essentially pins the mainline near its best flow rate below that point. Below critical, throughput rises with density; beyond it, shockwaves roll back and queues march upstream, producing the perverse regime where more cars mean fewer vehicles through. Releasing cars one or two at a time paces the merge, so dozens of seconds of orderly waiting on the ramp buy steady movement for thousands on the mainline and total system delay falls.

What is sight distance on a road and why is it important?

Sight distance is the shortest length over which a driver can see an obstacle ahead and stop or avoid it safely. Curve and grade design must guarantee enough sight distance, or rear-end and run-off-road crashes become likely.

What are the three fundamental elements of traffic flow?

Why does holding cars in queues behind ramp signals at freeway entrances actually let the whole freeway run faster?

Metering does not suppress travel demand; it staggers merge instants so mainline density never crosses the point where flow breaks down. Freeway throughput peaks at a critical density, and past it traffic flips into a congested regime: bottleneck discharge falls some five to ten percent below capacity while stop-and-go shockwaves march upstream. The controller tunes red time against live occupancy readings from downstream detectors, holding mainline density near the critical value and storing the surplus as orderly ramp queues, so both throughput and speed rise together.

When an urban arterial runs coordinated green-wave signaling, why must every intersection along it share one common cycle length, with offsets between neighboring junctions set from the running speed?

One common cycle keeps every intersection ticking in step, and the offset equals the spacing between junctions divided by the platoon's average running speed, so cars arrive downstream just as the light turns green. With differing cycles the timing alignment drifts every cycle and no stable band can exist; once offsets match travel time, the lead car reaches the downstream stop line inside the green band and followers roll through, cutting both stops and average delay, while opposing traffic gets its own band through mirrored offsets.

What is the braking principle of a bicycle?

A bicycle brake presses pads against the wheel rim or disc, using friction to turn rolling kinetic energy into heat. Squeezing the lever harder raises friction and slows the bike faster.

Why are there no traffic lights on highways?

Highways keep traffic separate through full access control, limited entries, and grade-separated interchanges, so flows do not conflict. Vehicles need not stop at intersections and can keep moving at high, continuous speed.

How are the green-light durations at urban intersections determined, and what counts as the optimal cycle for a signalized junction?

Not trial and error: the classic Webster formula yields the delay-minimizing cycle C0=(1.5L+5)/(1-Y), where L totals the lost time of all phases per cycle and Y sums the critical flow ratios. A too-short cycle lets lost time dominate and saturates the junction, while a too-long cycle stretches every red wait and pushes average delay back up. Deriving from minimal mean intersection delay, Webster then splits effective green in proportion to phase flow ratios — a framework that still anchors fixed-time signal design today.
