In climate adaptation, what does maladaptation mean, and why have the ever-higher flood dykes of the Mekong Delta become a textbook cautionary case?
Maladaptation names measures meant to lower climate risk that deepen vulnerability instead - enlarging exposure, inflating future risks and transition costs, or dumping burdens on the weakest. In Vietnam's Mekong Delta, dykes were raised year after year to secure two or three rice harvests: yields steadied at first, but floods no longer carried in nourishing sediment, subsidence and soil salinization worsened, and risk was squeezed onto unprotected communities downstream, while livelihoods grew so bound to the hazard zone that retreating later keeps getting costlier. Barnett and O'Neill's test flows from this: judge whether a project eases vulnerability and lock-in or cements them.

How does climate 'adaptation' differ from 'mitigation'?
Mitigation cuts emissions to cool the source; adaptation adjusts societies and ecosystems to cope with changes already underway—e.g., seawalls, drought-tolerant crops, urban green cooling.

Give examples of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for adaptation.
Examples: restoring mangroves and reefs as storm buffers, urban trees and wetlands for cooling, agroforestry for water retention. NbS yields co-benefits for adaptation, mitigation and biodiversity, but beware 'greenwashing'.

What is climate resilience?
It is the ability of a system (community, ecosystem, infrastructure) to absorb, recover from and adapt to climate shocks. Building it includes redundancy, early warning, ecological buffers and social protection.

What is a sponge city, and how does it hold rainwater during storms instead of drowning in flooded streets?
An approach to stormwater that lets a city behave like a sponge - soaking up, storing and cleansing rain, then releasing it for reuse in dry times. Its core is low-impact development: permeable paving, green roofs, sunken lawns, bioswales and retention ponds intercept runoff layer by layer right where it falls. China issued its technical guide for sponge city construction in 2014, with annual runoff volume control targets mostly between seventy and eighty-five percent, and national pilots began rolling out from 2015. Instead of merely enlarging grey drains, dispersed green infrastructure trims peaks, recharges aquifers and cools streets all at once.
