What is the concept of a species' ecological niche?
A niche describes how a species survives and reproduces, including the resources it uses, its timing and its relationships with other species, not merely its geographic range. Hutchinson defined it as the multidimensional environment space in which a species can persist. The competitive exclusion principle says two species cannot occupy the same niche indefinitely.

Why can't the harm of habitat fragmentation be measured by area loss alone?
Fragmentation changes spatial configuration at a given area: smaller patches push populations below minimum viable size, a higher edge ratio alters light, humidity, and wind while admitting predators and invasive plants, and isolation between patches blocks dispersal and gene flow. Long-running experiments show these effects accumulate, with species numbers continuing to fall for decades in what is called extinction debt. Conservation planning therefore has to weigh area, shape, connectivity, and matrix quality together, which is why corridors and stepping-stone habitats matter for restoring movement.

What is rewilding, and how does it differ from traditional ecological restoration?
Rewilding focuses on restoring self-driving natural processes, letting key ecosystem processes run on their own again. Its core tool is reintroducing keystone species such as wolves, beavers, and bison; for example, predator cascades re-regulate herbivores and vegetation, while natural succession is allowed to take the lead. Compared with traditional restoration, rewilding involves less intervention, larger spatial scales, and longer horizons. Its key challenges are the need for large, connected habitats and public acceptance.

How is DNA barcoding used to monitor biodiversity?
Unlike morphology-based identification, DNA barcoding identifies species by matching a standardised gene segment against reference databases; for animals, the mitochondrial COI gene is commonly used. The method recognises larvae, tissue fragments, and morphologically similar cryptic species, overcoming the limits of morphology. Environmental DNA (eDNA) goes a step further, extracting DNA that organisms leave in water, soil, or air so species can be detected without capture. eDNA is therefore especially suited to early warning of invasive species and surveys of rare species.

What is IPBES, and what core conclusion did its Global Assessment reach?
IPBES(生物多样性和生态系统服务政府间科学政策平台)是类似IPCC、但面向生物多样性的独立政府间机构。
IPBES (the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) is an independent intergovernmental body analogous to the IPCC but for biodiversity. Its 2019 Global Assessment concluded that around one million plant and animal species are at risk of extinction and that human activity has profoundly altered most terrestrial and marine ecosystems, calling for transformative change to reverse decline.

What does it mean for mine reclamation to upgrade from greening to ecological reconstruction?
Early reclamation often flattened abandoned pits and sowed a single grass species, producing little more than surface greening. Modern reclamation first rebuilds soil structure — capping, inoculating mycorrhizal fungi, and adjusting pH and heavy-metal levels. Only then does it reconstruct hydrological processes and native vegetation succession according to terrain, while monitoring whether animal communities return. The true goal is restoring sustainable ecosystem functions such as water retention, carbon storage, and habitat, not just a green surface.

How does island biogeography theory (MacArthur & Wilson) predict species richness on habitat fragments?
The theory holds that larger, nearer-to-source fragments hold more species, with richness set by a balance of immigration and extinction rates. It predicts that small, isolated patches in fragmented forests lose species faster, guiding reserve design.

Why was the study showing a 76% drop in flying insect biomass in German reserves so influential?
The work used Malaise traps with a consistent protocol across multiple reserves for twenty-seven years and measured biomass rather than species counts that are hard to standardise, so the trend is less vulnerable to taxonomic inconsistency. Flying insect biomass in midsummer fell about 76%, and it happened inside protected sites, implying pressures from regional agricultural intensity, pesticides, and habitat degradation rather than reserve management. The paper turned scattered observations of insect decline into a public issue and also triggered vigorous debate about methodology, baseline choice, and global representativeness.

Why is it said we may be in a 'sixth mass extinction,' and how many times the background rate is current extinction?
The fossil record shows five past natural mass extinctions; today, driven by habitat loss, climate change, and overexploitation, species are vanishing at an estimated 100 to 1,000 times the background (natural) rate. Many scientists argue human activity is driving a sixth mass extinction—slower than past events but comparably broad in scope.

Can degraded grassland fully recover through fencing and grazing exclusion alone, and what measures are key?
Fencing and grazing exclusion let vegetation cover and soil carbon recover, with clear short-term gains. But prolonged total exclusion causes litter buildup, fuel accumulation, and species simplification, because moderate grazing and trampling by herbivores are themselves part of grassland ecosystem processes. Modern grassland restoration therefore combines rotational grazing, reseeding native grasses, and scientific fire management, while restoring interactions between large ungulates and soil fauna. Only by combining protection with moderate use can fully functional grasslands be rebuilt.

How did island biogeography theory reshape the design of nature reserves?
MacArthur and Wilson argued in 1967 that species number on an island reflects a dynamic equilibrium between immigration and extinction, with larger area lowering extinction and proximity to a mainland raising immigration, summarised by species-area relationships. Conservation biologists treated fragmented habitats as terrestrial islands and inferred that reserves should be large, close together, connected by corridors, and shaped to minimise edge effects. The framework also sparked the single-large-or-several-small debate, and later work showed the answer depends on target species' dispersal ability and disturbance regimes.

What does the Amazon tipping point hypothesis claim, and why does it hinge on rainfall recycling?
Between a third and a half of Amazon rainfall is generated by the forest's own transpiration, with moisture recycled inland stage by stage in what are called flying rivers. If deforestation and fire cut canopy cover past a threshold, reduced transpiration shortens the wet season and raises fire risk, converting the south-east progressively toward savanna — a self-reinforcing process that is the tipping point hypothesis. Lovejoy and Nobre argued that with added warming a loss of 20–25% of the forest could trigger the shift, and aircraft measurements have already found the south-eastern Amazon acting as a net carbon source in some years.

Why did the European Union restrict outdoor use of neonicotinoids, and how do they affect pollinators?
Neonicotinoids are neurotoxins that act selectively on insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors; applied as seed coatings, they move systemically through the xylem and appear in pollen and nectar, giving pollinators prolonged low-dose exposure. Field-scale studies found impaired navigation and learning in honeybees and reduced queen production and colony establishment in wild bees — sublethal effects that nonetheless undermine population persistence. After European Food Safety Authority assessments supported those risk conclusions, the EU banned outdoor use of imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, and clothianidin from 2018.

What role does a reference ecosystem play in restoration, and why can't it simply be copied?
A reference ecosystem is a historical or remnant healthy system in the target region that provides baselines for species composition, structure, and function — the bullseye for restoration. Its value is giving restoration a benchmark, avoiding arbitrary plant mixes. But climate and land use have changed, so copying the historical state is unrealistic and poorly suited to future conditions. Modern practice therefore uses references as baselines while designing multi-objective schemes around target species and future climate — reference plus target-driven restoration.

Eradication of alien invasive species succeeds far more often on islands than on continents: how do propagule pressure and reinvasion pathways explain that gap?
Islands present bounded, finite terrain where toxic baiting, exclusion fencing, and port inspection can sever both surviving individuals and outside replenishment in a single operation, as repeated rodent eradications on New Zealand offshore islands demonstrate. Continents carry continuous terrestrial corridors plus enormous volumes of uninspected freight, and whenever introduction events exceed the establishment threshold, colonization recurs within just a few years of any successful eradication. Management emphasis has consequently shifted upstream toward border interception paired with early detection and rapid response.

Yes. Species richness only counts 'how many,' while functional diversity measures whether trait coverage (root depth, N-fixation, etc.) sustains productivity and nutrient cycling. Experiments show that with low redundancy, losing a single species can collapse a function.

Does a 73% decline in the Living Planet Index mean wildlife numbers have fallen by 73%?
No. The Living Planet Index tracks relative change in thousands of vertebrate populations and reports the geometric mean of those rates of change, not a sum of individual animals. A few collapsing populations therefore pull the average down sharply, while recovering populations do not offset them proportionally. WWF's 2024 report gives an average decline of about 73% from 1970 to 2020, which should be read as a large average shrinkage among monitored populations, worst in freshwater systems and the tropics.

What is a niche, and why can similar species coexist in the same forest?
A niche is the full job description of a species in an ecosystem — what it eats, when it is active, which layer it inhabits, and whom it competes with or helps. Similar species coexist through niche differentiation: birds that feed at different heights of the same tree, for example, avoid direct competition. Understanding niches underpins biodiversity conservation and management.

How does the decline of pollinating insects affect food security?
Roughly 70 percent of crops rely on animal pollination, so declines in bees and butterflies directly cut fruit and seed yields. This threatens supplies of nuts, fruits and some oil crops and raises prices. Protecting wildflower strips and cutting pesticides help.

How do keystone and umbrella species differ in their roles in conservation planning?

A keystone species exerts a disproportionately large influence — removing it triggers cascading collapse, as when sea otters vanish and urchins devour kelp forests. An umbrella species needs large intact habitat, so protecting it incidentally protects co-occurring species. In planning, keystone species guide maintaining ecological processes, while umbrella species guide reserve sizing.

If two communities have the same species richness, why can their diversity indices still differ?
Richness only counts species; the Shannon index also accounts for the evenness of individuals: a community with one species holding 90% of individuals carries less information and stability than one with ten species at 10% each. Shannon H'=-Σ pi·ln(pi) grows as individuals are more evenly spread, making it a fuller measure of diversity than a plain species count.

What are the limitations of coral transplantation in reef restoration?
Coral transplantation is only one restoration tool: on bleached or degraded reefs, transplanted corals struggle to survive long-term if warming, acidification, and pollution persist. Recent efforts emphasise heat-tolerant coral nurseries combined with integrated management of marine protected areas. Restoration is not a silver bullet — preventing degradation and reducing stressors is fundamental.

Why does energy shrink up the food chain, and does it matter what humans eat?
Only about 10 percent of energy is converted into new biomass at each step of the food chain; the rest is lost to respiration and metabolism, so the energy pyramid narrows upward and top predators are fewest. This is also why meat demands far more land and water than plants — crops must feed animals first. Understanding that ratio is the scientific starting point for a lower-footprint diet.

Species interact through predation, competition, parasitism and symbiosis. Symbiosis includes mutualism — legume plants and nitrogen-fixing bacteria, or clownfish sheltered by anemones — and commensalism, where one partner benefits and the other is unaffected.
Why is genetic diversity an underappreciated layer of biodiversity?
Genetic diversity is the variation within a species and sets its adaptive potential: richer gene pools make disease-resistant or drought-tolerant individuals more likely to emerge. In agriculture, modern uniform high-yield varieties have displaced many traditional cultivars, concentrating risk; the Svalbard Global Seed Vault exists precisely to preserve this layer.

Why is natural regeneration sometimes better than large-scale tree planting?
Natural regeneration relies on the dormant seed bank in soil and seed dispersal from nearby forests — it is cheap, genetically diverse, and produces structurally complex forests that support fuller food webs. Large monoculture plantations can die from water stress in dry regions and provide limited ecological function. Good practice blends passive regeneration with assisted measures rather than one-size-fits-all planting.

Why are the economic costs of invasive species usually underestimated?
Most tallies capture only visible direct spending — clearing zebra mussels from intake pipes, repairing power-plant cooling systems, or eradicating outbreaks — while degraded ecosystem services, sustained losses in fisheries and agriculture, and irreversible native extinctions resist monetisation. Reporting gaps also skew toward wealthy countries and charismatic or notorious species, leaving tropical regions and soil biota nearly unquantified. A synthesis built on a global cost database put cumulative costs from 1970 to 2017 above one trillion US dollars, with reported figures rising steeply over time.

After wolves returned in 1995, researchers recorded declining elk numbers and altered browsing, recovering willow and aspen in valley bottoms, more stable banks, and increases in beaver and songbirds — described as a trophic cascade of landscape scale. The dispute is that these shifts are hard to separate from concurrent drought variability, predation by bears and cougars, elk harvest policy, and natural channel evolution, and long-term plots show willow recovery varying strongly between reaches. The case is a reminder that natural experiments lack controls, so causal attribution demands careful statistical design.

Why does biodiversity help ecosystems resist climate change?
Species-rich ecosystems tend to have redundant functions and greater resilience, better withstanding disturbances like drought and heat. Different species respond differently to change, preventing whole-system collapse. Protecting biodiversity is thus also a climate-adaptation strategy.

What is the difference between in-situ and ex-situ conservation, and why can't ex-situ replace in-situ?
In-situ conservation protects populations and ecological processes in their native habitats through reserves and national parks and is fundamental. Ex-situ conservation — zoos, botanic gardens, and seed banks — is a safety net when species near extinction in the wild, e.g., the South China tiger and cycads. Ex-situ populations are small, genetically poorer, and lose natural selection pressure; the ultimate goal is reintroduction to restore wild populations, so it complements but never replaces in-situ protection.

What is an endemic species?
An endemic species occurs naturally only in one specific region and nowhere else, such as the koala in Australia or the giant panda in China. Because their ranges are narrow, they are especially vulnerable to environmental change and habitat loss. Protecting endemics also protects a region's unique ecology.

Why can invasive species wreak havoc on native ecosystems?
Invasive species, carried deliberately or by accident into places with no natural enemies, can breed explosively, monopolise food and space, restructure habitats and drive local species down or out — while damaging farming and health. Water hyacinth and red imported fire ants are famous examples. The best window for control is early invasion, through quarantine and rapid removal; once established, eradication becomes vastly costlier.

What is genetic diversity?
Genetic diversity is the variation in genes among individuals of the same species, the basis for adapting to change and resisting disease.
What happens at the cellular level during coral bleaching, and why is bleaching not immediate death?
Coral tissue hosts symbiotic zooxanthellae that supply most of the host's photosynthetic energy and give the colony its colour. When water warms abnormally, the algal photosystem is damaged and generates reactive oxygen species, so the coral expels its symbionts to limit oxidative injury and the white calcium carbonate skeleton shows through — that is bleaching. The animal is still alive, and if heat stress eases within weeks it can reacquire symbionts and recover, but prolonged heat leads to starvation, mortality, and algal overgrowth. NOAA's Coral Reef Watch confirmed the fourth global bleaching event on record in 2024.

What are ecosystem services, and why are economists studying them?
Ecosystem services are the benefits nature provides: provisioning (food, freshwater), regulating (climate, flood control, pollination), supporting (nutrient cycling) and cultural (scenery, recreation). Putting a monetary value on the services of forests, wetlands and reefs brings conservation into cost–benefit decisions — a wetland's water-purifying value often outweighs the profit from draining and developing it.

Why are native aquatic plants preferred over introduced ornamental species when restoring wetlands?
Native aquatic plants are adapted to local hydrology and climate; they stabilise sediment, purify water, and provide food and breeding habitat for birds and fish. Introduced ornamentals can spread aggressively and displace natives. Because restoration aims to rebuild self-sustaining wetland ecosystems rather than scenery, native species give higher survival and greater ecological returns.

About three-quarters of crop species depend on animal pollination — apples, strawberries, coffee and nuts all rely on bees, butterflies and other pollinators. These insects face habitat loss, pesticide exposure, disease and climate change all at once. Protecting them can start with wildflower strips, avoiding sprays during bloom, and ecological corridors — safeguarding both nature and harvests.

Why has Spartina alterniflora been able to spread so rapidly across eastern China's coastal mudflats and outcompete native emergent plants such as Phragmites australis?
The cordgrass combines salinity and submergence tolerance with salt-excreting glands, letting it settle across a tidal range from open mudflat to high-marsh margins, a niche the native reed cannot occupy on lower flats. Rhizomatous clonal growth quickly locks onto newly formed bare flats, while abundant seeds are broadcast long distances by tidal currents. These physiological and reproductive advantages stack up into exclusive monodominant stands along the Jiangsu and Fujian coasts.

What is an indicator species and why do scientists monitor them?
Indicator species are especially sensitive to environmental change such as pollution or temperature, so their population shifts flag ecosystem health early. Mussels and amphibians, for example, act as sentinels for water quality and wetland decline.

How does habitat fragmentation affect species survival?
Roads, farmland and cities split continuous habitat into patches, isolating populations and reducing gene flow. Small patches suffer stronger edge effects and disturbances, raising local extinction risk. Ecological corridors help animals reconnect.

What is the difference between Endangered and Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List?
Both are threatened categories, but Critically Endangered (CR) faces a far higher near-term extinction risk than Endangered (EN), with steeper population or range decline. IUCN uses quantitative criteria such as ≥80% decline over three generations.

What are the three levels of biodiversity?
Biodiversity is usually divided into three levels: genetic diversity (gene variation within a species), species diversity (number and abundance of species), and ecosystem diversity (variety of ecosystem types). These levels support one another and none can be neglected. Conservation must work at all three.

What causes coral bleaching?
Corals live with zooxanthellae that give them colour and nutrients. When seas warm abnormally or face other environmental stressors, corals expel these algae and turn white, losing their main energy source. If heat persists, corals starve and the reef ecosystem collapses.

How do invasive species cause ecological damage?
Invasive species lack natural predators in new environments, so they multiply fast and seize the food and space of natives. They can alter soils, hydrology and even fire regimes, driving native decline. Prevention at the source and early rapid removal are key.

Does the diversity–stability hypothesis say more diverse ecosystems are more stable?
More species usually mean more functional redundancy and complementarity, so productivity and function resist drought or disease better; some note diversity boosts 'stability' but not invariance in every dimension.

Why do invasive alien species often cause big problems?
Invasive alien species moved to new places often lack natural enemies, so they spread fast and crowd out native species for space and food. They cost agriculture, fisheries and ecosystems dearly each year and are a leading driver of biodiversity loss.

What happens to our dinner table if bees disappear?
Bees pollinate much of our produce: apples, strawberries, watermelon and cucumbers would shrink badly, leaving mostly rice and potatoes — even vanilla ice cream suffers since vanilla needs insect pollination too. The famous Einstein warning? He never said it — but bees truly carry about a third of world food production.

What is species richness?
Species richness is the number of species in a given area, one of the most direct measures of biodiversity. It counts only how many kinds and does not weigh their abundance. Tropical regions typically have far higher species richness than cold or polar areas.
