Why is Kalundborg in Denmark called the living textbook of industrial symbiosis, and how did its web of by-product exchanges between companies come together?

Over decades of deal-by-deal bargaining, the local power station, refinery, pharmaceutical plant and gypsum board factory wove a network where energy and matter interlace: surplus heat warms the town and desulphurised gypsum feeds the board factory, treated process water returns to cool the power station, and biological sludge from drug fermentation fertilises farms. Each link rides on a bilateral commercial contract - sellers monetise residues, buyers cut input costs - sparing large volumes of groundwater and fuel every year. The essence is symbiosis emerging bottom-up from deal economics, never from administrative blueprint.

Why do circular cities zero in on construction and demolition waste, and what do material passports and buildings-as-material-banks offer as remedies?

Construction and demolition debris makes up the largest single share of urban solid waste, which is why the EU Waste Framework Directive required seventy percent recovery of it by weight from 2020. The circular response works on two fronts. For the standing stock, material passports record each component's substance and position, turning older buildings into searchable warehouses of parts. For new builds, reversible bolted connections and modular elements allow high-value pieces to be unbolted intact during refurbishment or demolition for direct reuse instead of being crushed wholesale into roadbed fill.

What is urban metabolism, and why should a city be run as a metabolic system?

Urban metabolism describes how a city, like an organism, keeps drawing in food, energy, building materials and freshwater while discharging wastewater, refuse and exhaust gases. The conventional linear pattern leans on virgin resource extraction at one end and piles up waste at the other, producing twin pressures of depletion and pollution. Taking a leaf from natural nutrient cycling, circular cities redesign discard streams into inputs - rubble reborn as aggregate, kitchen waste digested into biogas, nitrogen and phosphorus recovered from greywater - so growth decouples from virgin extraction.
