What is radiative forcing?
Radiative forcing is the net change in Earth's energy balance at the top of the atmosphere caused by factors such as increased greenhouse gases or solar variability, measured in watts per square meter. Positive forcing warms the planet by adding absorbed energy, while negative forcing cools it. It is a key metric for quantifying each factor's climate impact.

What is a climate tipping point, and is the change truly irreversible once one is crossed?
A tipping point is a threshold beyond which a component of the climate system reorganises into a new state, often irreversibly, even if the original driver is removed. High-risk tipping elements studied by scientists include collapse of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, large-scale dieback of the Amazon, and weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. Research shows the chance of triggering multiple tipping points rises markedly above 1.5–2°C of warming — exactly why countries aim to keep warming below that range.

How does surface albedo affect climate?
Albedo is the fraction of solar radiation a surface reflects; snow and ice have high albedo, while ocean and forest have low albedo. When ice melts to reveal darker surfaces, more heat is absorbed, creating a positive feedback that amplifies warming. Albedo change is a key mechanism behind polar amplification.

What does a tipping point mean in the climate system?
A tipping point is an irreversible or self-reinforcing abrupt change that occurs once the climate system crosses certain thresholds. Examples include Amazon rainforest dieback, Greenland ice sheet collapse, or weakening of the Atlantic overturning circulation. Once crossed, recovery is difficult even if emissions stop, making tipping points among the most dangerous climate risks.

What is equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS), and what is the current best scientific estimate?
Equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS) is the long-term global mean surface warming that results once the climate system has re-equilibrated after atmospheric CO2 is doubled. The IPCC Sixth Assessment Report gives a likely range of 2.5–4.0°C with a best estimate of about 3°C, making ECS a central parameter for evaluating long-term warming scenarios and policy targets.

Why is ocean heat content considered the most robust metric of global warming?
About 90% of the excess heat from Earth's energy imbalance is taken up by the ocean and only a few percent stays in the atmosphere, so ocean heat content carries far less interannual noise than surface air temperature. The Argo float array has delivered continuous global temperature and salinity profiles down to 2000 metres since the 2000s, producing a heat-content curve that rises almost monotonically. Surface temperature, by contrast, wobbles with El Niño, volcanic eruptions, and aerosol changes.

What components make up global sea level rise, and how have their shares shifted in recent decades?
Sea level rise comes mainly from four terms: thermal expansion of seawater, melting mountain glaciers, mass loss from the Greenland Ice Sheet, and mass loss from Antarctica, plus a smaller contribution from changes in land water storage. Thermal expansion dominated in the mid-twentieth century, but since the satellite altimetry era the combined ice contribution has overtaken it. The IPCC assessed a rise of about 0.20 metres in global mean sea level from 1901 to 2018, with the rate accelerating.

Why does wet-bulb temperature capture the lethality of a heatwave better than air temperature?
The body sheds heat mainly by evaporating sweat, and evaporation depends on the vapour pressure difference with the air, which is exactly what wet-bulb temperature folds temperature and humidity into. When wet-bulb temperature approaches skin temperature near 35°C, evaporative cooling fails in principle, so even a healthy person resting in the shade cannot maintain thermal balance. Laboratory work shows the real uncompensable threshold is often nearer 30°C wet-bulb, which is why a dry 45°C day can be safer than a humid 35°C one.

How do atmospheric aerosols affect climate?
Aerosols are tiny suspended particles; some, like sulfates, reflect sunlight and cool the climate, while others, like black carbon, absorb heat and warm it. They are short-lived and unevenly distributed, complicating regional climate and rainfall and adding uncertainty to projections. Reducing aerosols may briefly reveal warming they had masked.

How do greenhouse gases warm the Earth, and what does radiative forcing actually mean?
Shortwave sunlight passes through the atmosphere and warms the surface, which re-emits longwave infrared radiation. Greenhouse gases such as CO2 absorb part of that infrared and re-radiate it back downward, trapping energy near the ground — the greenhouse effect. Radiative forcing quantifies how strongly a factor (such as changing CO2 levels) perturbs the planet's energy balance, in watts per square metre. Doubling atmospheric CO2 produces a direct forcing of about 3.7 W/m²; a positive value means more energy in than out, so the climate warms.

Why is Ocean Heat Content a more reliable warming indicator than surface air temperature?
The ocean absorbs over 90% of Earth's energy surplus, with huge thermal inertia and low year-to-year noise, so it tracks the system's total energy gain smoothly; surface air temperature is noisier due to ENSO and volcanic swings. OHC trend is thus one of the most robust fingerprints of greenhouse forcing.

According to IPCC AR6, how much has global warming reached above pre-industrial levels, and what share is attributed to human activity?
The IPCC Sixth Assessment (2021/2023) reports that from 2011–2020 the global surface was about 1.1°C warmer than the 1850–1900 pre-industrial level, and it is 'unequivocal' that human activity is the dominant driver, contributing an estimated ~1.07°C of that warming. The report stresses that without rapid, deep cuts the 1.5°C threshold could be crossed in the 2030s.

What is equilibrium climate sensitivity, and why did the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report narrow its range?
Equilibrium climate sensitivity is the total rise in global mean surface temperature once the climate system re-equilibrates after a doubling of atmospheric carbon dioxide. AR6 combined three independent lines of evidence — paleoclimate records, the historical instrumental record, and process understanding — to set a best estimate near 3°C with a likely range of 2.5–4°C. The decisive advance was better quantification of low-cloud feedback, previously the dominant source of spread.

Methane has a 100-year global warming potential near 28 but a 20-year value above 80 — why does that gap matter for policy?
Methane's atmospheric lifetime is about twelve years, so spreading its radiative effect over a century dilutes it heavily, while a twenty-year horizon makes it look far more potent; AR6 gives fossil methane a GWP-100 of about 29.8 and a GWP-20 of about 82.5. Cutting methane therefore slows the rate of warming within a decade, buying time, but it cannot substitute for CO2 cuts because only cumulative CO2 sets the long-term peak temperature. The choice of horizon directly reshapes the relative burden placed on livestock, oil and gas leakage, and waste sectors.

How does climate risk insurance work, and why is it hardest to insure in the most burdened regions?
Parametric (index) insurance pre-agrees payout thresholds for weather indicators such as rainfall and typhoon intensity, and pays out automatically once a threshold is crossed, without on-site claims inspection. This lets farmers and vulnerable regions receive funds quickly after a disaster, bypassing slow traditional claims processes. But in high-risk zones premiums soar and private markets often fail, so government subsidies and reinsurance backstops are needed. It must also be recognised that insurance only shares financial losses and cannot replace mitigation and adaptation.

Why might the International Maritime Organization's sulphur cap have made ocean warming more visible?
Sulphur dioxide from heavy marine fuel forms sulphate aerosol that both scatters sunlight directly and seeds brighter, longer-lived marine low clouds, offsetting part of greenhouse warming for decades. The MARPOL Annex VI cap that took effect in 2020 cut fuel sulphur content from 3.5% to 0.5%, and satellite-visible ship tracks over major shipping lanes thinned sharply. Removing that inadvertent sunshade added positive radiative forcing over busy corridors such as the North Pacific, an effect researchers have described as a termination shock.

Why do climate models project polar amplification rather than uniform warming, and what role does lapse-rate feedback play?
Polar amplification arises mainly from ice-albedo feedback and poleward heat transport, while the tropical lapse-rate feedback is strongly negative, making tropical surface warming smaller than the global mean. These regional feedbacks combine to produce highly uneven warming by latitude.

How does extreme event attribution conclude that a heatwave became so many times more likely?
Researchers run large climate-model ensembles for two worlds: the factual one with observed anthropogenic forcing, and a counterfactual one with human greenhouse gas and aerosol influence removed. Comparing the return periods of an equally intense event in each world yields the change in likelihood, and long observational records are used as an independent check. The World Weather Attribution collaboration applies this to publish rapid assessments within weeks, concluding for instance that the 2021 Pacific Northwest heat dome would have been virtually impossible without human influence.

What is marine ice sheet instability, and why is Antarctica's Thwaites Glacier called the doomsday glacier?
Marine ice sheet instability arises where an ice sheet rests on bedrock that deepens inland and its grounding line lies below sea level: once the grounding line retreats, ice thickness and outflow at that line increase, creating a self-accelerating feedback. Thwaites Glacier drains a basin with exactly this geometry, and warm Circumpolar Deep Water is eroding its ice shelf from beneath. Wholesale destabilisation of that basin could add more than half a metre to global sea level and undermine neighbouring West Antarctic ice streams.

Is water vapour the strongest greenhouse gas, and why do scientists call it a feedback rather than a forcing?
Water vapour indeed contributes the largest share of the greenhouse effect, but its concentration is not controlled directly by humans — it follows temperature: warmer air can hold more moisture. External forcings such as CO2 warm the planet first; warmer air then holds more water vapour, which amplifies the warming. This is the water-vapour feedback. So climatologists treat water vapour as a feedback that magnifies change, while CO2 is a forcing that drives change — which is why rising atmospheric CO2 gets so much attention.

Climate models divide the atmosphere, ocean, ice sheets and land into a global grid and solve equations for the physical, chemical and biological processes that move energy, moisture, carbon and momentum between cells. Driven by different emissions scenarios, they project future climate. Their credibility rests on successfully reproducing past climate and on agreement across many independent models; the projections of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report build on such model ensembles.

The global carbon budget quantifies the annual balance of carbon sources and sinks among human emissions and natural reservoirs (atmosphere, ocean, land). Scientists combine emission inventories, atmospheric satellite observations, ocean buoys, and ecosystem models to estimate each flux. A mismatch between emissions and the sum of atmospheric growth plus ocean and land uptake reveals poorly understood fluxes.

Why is the troposphere warming while the stratosphere cools?
More CO₂ lets the lower atmosphere (troposphere) retain heat and warm, while the stratosphere absorbs less outgoing infrared and, with ozone loss, cools overall. This 'warm below, cool above' pattern is a classic fingerprint of greenhouse forcing.

Why is nature-based flood management often better than purely concrete levees?
River flooding is a natural process: restoring floodplains and reconnecting channels and wetlands gives rivers room to flood, trimming peaks and easing levee pressure while creating habitat for fish spawning and birds. Concrete levees block water locally but raise downstream peaks and sever ecological connectivity at high maintenance cost. Combining green and grey infrastructure usually works best.

What is the albedo effect?
Albedo is the fraction of solar radiation reflected by a surface; snow, ice, and clouds have high albedo and cool the planet by reflecting sunlight. When ice melts to reveal dark ocean or land, albedo drops and more heat is absorbed, accelerating warming in a positive feedback. This mechanism amplifies the initial climate forcing.

Why is solar radiation management such as stratospheric aerosol injection considered high-risk?
Injecting sulphate precursors into the stratosphere could mimic a large volcanic eruption to reflect sunlight, lowering global mean temperature quickly and at relatively low direct cost. The risks are that it masks warming without removing carbon dioxide, so ocean acidification continues, and that the cooling is spatially uneven, potentially shifting monsoons and tropical rainfall and worsening drought or flooding in some regions. More troubling is termination shock: if sustained injection stopped, suppressed warming would arrive within a few years. Sulphate would also delay ozone layer recovery, and with no governance regime in place, deciding who may deploy it is itself an unresolved problem.

Why is the Arctic warming faster than the global average?
Arctic amplification is driven mainly by ice-albedo feedback: melting sea ice exposes dark ocean that absorbs more solar energy. Redistribution of heat and moisture in the polar atmosphere further enhances warming. As a result, the Arctic can warm two to four times faster than the global average.

Why is the 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai eruption thought to cause short-term warming rather than the cooling typical of volcanoes?
Most large eruptions cool the surface because stratospheric sulphur dioxide converts to sulphate aerosol that reflects sunlight, as after Pinatubo in 1991. The Tongan vent sat beneath shallow ocean, so the blast injected roughly 150 teragrams of water vapour into the stratosphere — around a 10% increase in its total burden — while delivering comparatively little sulphur. Water vapour is a strong greenhouse gas with a multi-year stratospheric residence time, so the net effect leaned toward brief warming while also perturbing stratospheric chemistry and ozone.

Within the attribution of Arctic amplification, how can the roles of the sea-ice albedo feedback and the water-vapour feedback be distinguished?
Summer sea-ice retreat multiplies shortwave absorption over open water and directly drives near-surface warming, while delayed freeze-up lengthens the energy-gaining window, giving the albedo feedback a locked seasonal phase. Water vapour, a powerful greenhouse gas, dominates surface heating through downward longwave radiation in autumn and winter and slowly releases heat stored in the upper ocean. Radiometric observations and model sensitivity experiments alike show the two feedbacks peaking in different seasons, which permits their quantitative separation.

Why does cutting methane emissions slow warming so quickly?
Methane warms about 80 times more than CO2 over a 20-year horizon, yet it survives in the atmosphere only about a decade, versus centuries for CO2. Cutting methane, black carbon and other short-lived climate pollutants therefore slows warming within a few years — UNEP calls methane cuts among the fastest and strongest levers for the 1.5°C goal — while also improving air quality.

Why use carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) to compare greenhouse gases?
Greenhouse gases differ greatly in warming power and lifetime, so they cannot be compared by mass directly. CO2e uses carbon dioxide as a reference and converts other gases into an equivalent CO2 mass using a warming potential over a set horizon, such as 100 years. Food systems account for roughly one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, spanning farming, land use, transport, and food waste. At the same time, malnutrition and food waste coexist worldwide.
How does the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) influence European climate, and what does its weakening imply?
The AMOC carries warm surface water from the tropics to the North Atlantic, keeping Western Europe milder in winter than other regions at similar latitudes. Observations show its strength is near a millennium low, and further weakening could cool Europe, raise coastal sea levels, and disrupt monsoons.

What is the albedo effect, and how does it create a positive feedback with melting ice and snow?
Albedo is the fraction of incoming solar radiation reflected by a surface; snow and ice have high albedo (about 0.6–0.9) and reflect most sunlight. When warming melts ice and snow to expose darker ocean or land, albedo drops and more heat is absorbed, which further accelerates melting and warming—creating a positive feedback. The ice–albedo feedback strongly amplifies warming in regions like the Arctic.

Why do scientists say the Earth is in an energy imbalance, and where does the extra heat go?
An energy imbalance is the gap between the solar energy the Earth absorbs and the heat it radiates to space. With more greenhouse gases, the planet now absorbs more than it loses — roughly 0.9 watts per square metre globally. Over 90 percent of that extra heat goes into the ocean, showing up as rising sea temperatures, sea-level rise and stronger marine heatwaves.

Why do El Niño years so often set new global annual temperature records?
During El Niño the warm surface layer of the central and eastern equatorial Pacific expands and cold upwelling weakens, so the ocean releases stored heat to the atmosphere and adds a short-term boost of roughly 0.1–0.2°C on top of the underlying warming trend. The World Meteorological Organization reported that 2023 ran about 1.45°C above pre-industrial levels while a strong El Niño was developing. La Niña years pull the figure down temporarily, which sometimes leads people to claim warming has paused.

Why is climate sensitivity often referenced around 2°C as a threshold?
Equilibrium climate sensitivity is the long-term temperature change after a doubling of atmospheric CO2, assessed by the IPCC as likely between 2.5–4°C. The 2°C figure comes from the Paris Agreement's target; staying below it sharply reduces tipping-point risks, though impacts still accumulate non-linearly.

How does the ocean absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide?
At the sea surface, CO2 diffuses into seawater where it is more soluble and is converted into dissolved inorganic carbon such as carbonic acid, bicarbonate, and carbonate ions. Cold high-latitude waters absorb more, and the biological pump carries plankton-fixed carbon to the deep ocean.
The ocean absorbs so much CO2 — what happens to the ocean itself?
The ocean absorbs about a quarter of human CO2 emissions, greatly slowing atmospheric warming. But CO2 dissolving in seawater forms carbonic acid and lowers the pH — ocean acidification. Acidified water makes it harder for shellfish, corals and other creatures to build calcium-carbonate shells. Protecting the ocean therefore also starts with cutting CO2.

Why does the Earth warm even faster once Arctic sea ice melts?
Bright sea ice reflects most sunlight back to space, while dark open ocean absorbs much more of it. As ice melts and open water expands, the planet absorbs more solar energy, the water warms further and melts even more ice — a self-reinforcing ice–albedo feedback.
How does La Niña differ from El Niño?

What is the scientific link between extreme weather and climate change?
Climate change does not create weather, but by shifting atmospheric energy and moisture it raises the likelihood and intensity of some extremes. Examples are more frequent heatwaves, concentrated heavy rainfall, and coastal storms riding higher seas. Attribution science can now quantify the human contribution to individual events.

Why is methane's warming potential much higher than carbon dioxide's?
Methane absorbs infrared radiation far more efficiently per molecule than CO2, making it extremely potent at the molecular level. But it lasts only about 12 years in the atmosphere, much shorter than CO2's centuries, so its cumulative long-term effect is smaller. Over 100 years, methane's warming potential is roughly 28 to 36 times that of CO2.

What is climate loss and damage, and how does it differ from adaptation?
Loss and damage refers to climate harms that adaptation cannot avoid or offset, such as homes permanently submerged by sea-level rise or water supply reduced by melting glaciers. Unlike adaptation, which reduces future risk, loss and damage addresses harm already occurring or unavoidable, and involves financial support — such as the international Loss and Damage Fund.

How do scientists judge whether a glacier is healthy or in sustained deficit?
The key measure is annual mass balance: winter snow and ice accumulation minus summer melt, positive for growth and negative for loss. Observers also track the equilibrium line altitude, the boundary between accumulation and ablation zones; a line that keeps rising means the high-elevation area able to feed the glacier is shrinking. The reference-glacier series maintained by the World Glacier Monitoring Service shows more than three consecutive decades of negative balance worldwide.

What is radiative forcing, and how does the IPCC use it to gauge human influence on climate?
Radiative forcing is the change in net energy flux at the top of the atmosphere caused by some factor relative to pre-industrial conditions, expressed in watts per square meter (W/m²); positive values warm the planet. The IPCC uses it to quantify the contributions of different drivers—such as greenhouse gases, aerosols, and solar activity—and attributes the net positive forcing from human activity as the main cause of recent global warming.

Why does thermal expansion of seawater raise sea level?
When water warms it becomes less dense and expands in volume, so the ocean rises even without added water. Because the ocean is deep and stores enormous heat, thermal expansion was the largest single contributor to 20th-century sea level rise. Its effect persists for decades to centuries as heat penetrates the deep ocean.

Within attribution of amplified Arctic warming, why does the mechanism of black carbon dimming snow and ice rank immediately behind greenhouse gases in importance?
Black carbon, born of incomplete combustion, converts highly reflective snow and ice surfaces into heat absorbers upon deposition; accelerated melt then exposes darker sea ice and tundra, compounding the feedback level by level. Quantifications by the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme place its radiative forcing on springtime warming on par with methane, and because the aerosol persists only days to weeks aloft, emission curbs convert into cooling benefits within several years, making it a priority action item for the Arctic Council.

Why do scientists panic over just 1.5 degrees of warming?
That figure is a global average — like body temperature climbing 36.5 to 38, a small mean change meaning serious illness. Climate systems amplify small averages into extreme swings: doubled heat waves, fiercer storms, island-drowning seas, ninety percent coral bleaching. The Paris Agreement set 1.5 degrees because beyond it some changes turn irreversible.

How does the greenhouse effect warm the Earth?

What is the greenhouse effect, and why is it important for life on Earth?
The greenhouse effect occurs when certain atmospheric gases—such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane—absorb and re-radiate the infrared heat that Earth's surface emits outward, keeping the surface warmer than it would be without an atmosphere. Without the natural greenhouse effect, the average surface temperature would be about -18°C instead of the habitable ~15°C, so a moderate greenhouse effect is essential for liquid water and life.

Arctic amplification makes the Arctic warm about three to four times faster than the global average. As ice and snow melt, darker ocean surfaces are exposed and absorb more sunlight, driving further warming.

Do glaciers weep? Where do ice seracs and those blue ponds on glacier surfaces come from?
Ablation-zone glaciers flow like slow rivers: snow compacts to ice in the upper accumulation zone while downstream losses outpace gains. Rugged relief tears ice surfaces into sawtooth serac forests, common in the Himalaya; summer meltwater pools into blue-green supraglacial lakes tinted by suspended rock flour. These lakes are warning lights — dammed by loose moraine, they burst as glacial lake outburst floods that have repeatedly struck the Himalaya and Andes. Satellites show mountain glaciers retreating worldwide, feeding both sea-level rise and drought anxiety in downstream valleys.
