What is a life cycle assessment (LCA)?

LCA systematically quantifies a product's resource use and environmental emissions across raw extraction, manufacturing, use, and disposal. It avoids shifting pollution by optimizing one stage while worsening another. LCA is the scientific basis of green design and footprint accounting.

Why is air travel's carbon footprint especially high?

Aircraft burn jet fuel at altitude; per-mile emissions are not extreme, but long distances and frequency make annual totals large. High-altitude NOx and contrails also amplify warming. Hard-to-replace long-haul travel makes aviation a hard-to-abate sector.

How is plastic production linked to carbon emissions?

Most plastics are made from oil and gas, and extraction, cracking, and processing all consume fossil energy and emit CO2. Burning plastic waste later releases more carbon. Cutting single-use plastic reduces both waste and embedded emissions.

Why is beef's carbon footprint much higher than beans?

Cattle are ruminants that emit large amounts of methane during digestion and need vast pasture or feed cropland, often linked to deforestation. Per kilogram, beef can emit over ten times the greenhouse gases of beans. Shifting toward plant protein noticeably lowers dietary carbon footprints.

How much can vegetarian or plant-based diets cut emissions?

Studies show plant-based diets can have greenhouse gas footprints about half or less of heavy-meat diets. Even simply reducing red meat and eating more produce yields substantial savings. Dietary shifts are thus seen as low-cost, high-benefit climate strategy.

Do electric vehicles really cut carbon once battery manufacturing is counted fairly?

Fair accounting books both cars from mining to scrapping. EVs start in the red: making the lithium-ion pack emits roughly five to ten tonnes of CO2. But driving opens the gap — on the European grid, breakeven against combustion comes around sixty to ninety thousand kilometers and widens thereafter; on China's current mix near eighty to one hundred twenty thousand; with wind power the lead exists from day one. Three variables decide: grid cleanliness, battery size, vehicle life. As grids decarbonize and recycling matures, the EV ledger only improves — the petrol car's is frozen.

What is the ecological footprint and how does it differ from biocapacity?

The ecological footprint measures the productive land area needed to supply our resources and absorb our waste. Biocapacity is the area Earth (or a region) can sustainably provide; the gap between them is an ecological deficit.

What is a water footprint?

A water footprint measures the total water consumed and polluted to make a good or service, divided into blue, green, and grey water. A single cup of coffee from farm to cup can use over a hundred liters. It helps identify water hotspots to improve management.

What is Earth Overshoot Day?

Earth Overshoot Day is the date each year when humanity has used up that year's renewable resource budget, after which it lives on ecological deficit. It has moved earlier since the 1970s, reflecting footprints exceeding biocapacity. Pushing the date later requires lower consumption and higher resource efficiency.

Are paper bags always greener than plastic ones — should greenness be counted from cradle to grave?

Life-cycle assessment often surprises: paper wins on degradation alone, but counting forestry, energy-hungry pulping and transport (a paper sack weighs about six times more for the same volume), its carbon and water footprints per bag frequently dwarf thin plastic. A 2011 UK Environment Agency study estimated a cotton bag must be reused over 130 times to beat single-use HDPE on overall impacts. LCAs value lies in replacing green intuition with cradle-to-grave accounting — materials, manufacture, transport, reuse counts, disposal — where conclusions shift with local grids and habits, leaving nothing automatically green.
