How does bequest value in the total economic value framework enter decisions?

Total economic value includes use plus non-use values like existence and bequest—what people pay simply to know a species or landscape persists for future generations. Hard to trade directly, it still enters cost-benefit analysis via contingent valuation and preference surveys.

Why do ecosystem-service trade-offs make single-objective optimization backfire?

Boosting one service (e.g., monoculture carbon plantations) often weakens others (biodiversity, soil retention), and trade-offs shift with scale—local yield gains may cost watershed buffering. Ignoring these couplings, the 'optimal' solution at one scale becomes suboptimal globally or over time.

Why do site-dependence and non-linear thresholds break simple summing of ecosystem services?

The same service's value varies sharply by location (downstream population, land use), and several services can collapse together once degradation crosses a threshold rather than declining linearly; naive summing ignores spatial heterogeneity and hides tipping points, overestimating the safety margin for gradual development.

What is 'additionality' in payment-for-ecosystem-services (PES) schemes, and why does skipping this test turn compensation into paying for what would have happened anyway?

Additionality requires that the ecological improvement being paid for exceed the baseline scenario—the land use and degradation trajectory that would prevail without the payment. Where this test is absent, money flows to owners who would have kept their forest regardless; no new ecological benefit is created, the ecological return per unit of funding is diluted, and protection budgets are diverted from plots under real development pressure. Sound schemes therefore set a credible baseline, monitor compliance and pay only for incremental outcomes.

Why is soil, as a supporting service, the invisible base of food production?

Soil sustains crops via organic cycling, water holding, microbial N-fixation and root support; it forms over centuries but erodes or compacts within seasons, and once degraded is hard to restore—making it a slow-variable foundation.

How would pollinator-service decline hit our plates?

About a third of human food relies on pollination, with apples, almonds and coffee especially sensitive; fewer pollinators raise prices, cut yields and shrink dietary diversity, hitting nutrition security in vulnerable regions.

What is the difference between a carbon sink and a carbon stock?

A carbon stock is the total carbon held (e.g., forest biomass); a sink is the net amount absorbed per unit time. An old forest has a big stock but small annual sink, while a young forest sinks fast—they play different roles in climate accounting.

Why is mangrove storm-protection value per hectare often underrated?

Mangrove roots dampen waves and storm surge, sharply cutting erosion and flood damage whose replacement by seawalls would cost a fortune; as a 'non-market' service it is usually omitted from GDP accounting.

In a cross-provincial basin where the upstream protects and the downstream benefits, how does eco-compensation turn the external gains of conservation into incentives for those who protect?

Eco-compensation makes service beneficiaries pay for what they receive, internalizing otherwise unpaid external benefits. In the Xin'anjiang pilot, the central government together with Anhui and Zhejiang co-funds a scheme tied to water quality: when monitored quality meets the standard the downstream province pays compensation, otherwise the upstream pays damages—the assessment directly steers the funds. This reshapes local cost-benefit structure, turning water protection from a fiscal burden into a revenue source.

What are ecosystem services?

Ecosystem services are nature's free benefits to people—forests give oxygen and clean water, bees pollinate, mangroves block storms, soil builds fertility—grouped as provisioning, regulating, cultural and supporting.
