What effective solutions exist for the bycatch problem in fisheries?
Bycatch is the unintended capture of non-target species such as dolphins, sea turtles, and juveniles, and it can account for a large share of global catch. Reducing it starts with modified gear, such as turtle excluder devices (TEDs) and acoustic pingers that deter dolphins. Next come spatially and seasonally closed areas, plus circle hooks and improved nets. In addition, promoting fully traceable MSC-certified fisheries lets consumer choice reward responsible fishing.

How does the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) prevent overfishing?
Fishery scientists estimate sustainable yield from stock assessments; governments set the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) and allocate quotas to vessels, turning a tragedy of the commons into managed allocation. The key is adjusting quotas dynamically to the latest stock data, alongside gear restrictions and monitoring; with sound science and enforcement, most fish stocks can recover.

Why can marine protected areas boost neighbouring fisheries?
Inside protected areas fishing is banned or limited, so fish grow and reproduce and populations swell; because fish move outward across the borders, adults spill over into adjacent grounds, potentially replenishing nearby fisheries. Studies show that well-designed, effectively enforced MPAs can raise both biodiversity and fishery yields.
