Is the Amazon rainforest's carbon sink weakening?
Long-term observations show parts of the Amazon have shifted from a net carbon sink to a net source, mainly due to logging, fire, and intensifying drought. Carbon released by dying and burning trees is beginning to exceed what regrowing forest fixes. If the trend continues, the Amazon could cross a degradation tipping point and become a carbon source.

In forest management, why is the net effect of thinning on stand-level carbon sequestration still debated?
Thinning lowers stand density and often reduces biomass carbon stocks in the short run, while residual trees grow faster once competition is eased, raising per-tree carbon gain. The net outcome hinges on thinning intensity, rotation length, stand age, and the dynamics of harvest residues and soil carbon, which is why published results diverge. Adding substitution credits for harvested wood products widens the disagreement further.

Can tree planting alone solve climate change?
Planting trees adds sinks and improves ecology, but afforestation alone cannot offset all fossil emissions, and stored carbon can be reversed by fire. Poor siting may also lower albedo or squeeze farmland. Afforestation should accompany deep cuts, not replace them.

How does the length of rotations affect the carbon uptake of plantation forests, and how should the substitution of wood products for high-emission materials be treated in carbon accounting?
Short rotations keep stands in their fast-growing phase, lifting mean annual carbon uptake per hectare, but leave little time for growing stock and soil carbon pools to accumulate; long rotations raise total ecosystem carbon storage while depressing harvest revenues and slowing growth as stands age. When wood enters durable uses such as construction and furniture, its carbon stays locked away and displaces energy-intensive materials like steel and cement, yielding additional avoided emissions. Sound accounting lists forest ecosystem pools, durable wood-product pools, and substitution credits side by side, stating explicit system boundaries and time horizons, because results cannot be compared without them.

What are the typical layers of a tropical rainforest?
A tropical rainforest is usually divided into four layers: emergent, canopy, understory, and forest floor. The canopy is the main arena for photosynthesis and biodiversity, capturing most sunlight. This layering supports extremely high species richness.

What role do mangroves play in ecosystems and climate?
Mangroves are woody plant communities on tropical coasts with very high per-area carbon storage, making them important blue-carbon ecosystems. Their roots buffer storm surges, protect shorelines, and nurture abundant marine life. Destroying mangroves sacrifices both carbon stores and coastal protection.

Why are forests called a carbon sink?
Forests absorb atmospheric CO2 through photosynthesis and store the carbon in trees, litter, and soils. Healthy forests take up large amounts of carbon each year, offsetting some human emissions. Deforestation releases that stored carbon back to the atmosphere.

How does deforestation affect climate?
Deforestation removes a CO2-absorbing sink and releases stored carbon through burning and decay. It also alters regional water cycles and surface albedo, further affecting climate. Roughly a tenth of global greenhouse gas emissions come from deforestation and land-use change.
