Why is radon an important indoor lung-cancer cause yet often overlooked?
Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas from uranium decay in soil and rock that seeps in through foundation cracks; long-term inhalation is the top lung-cancer risk after smoking. Invisible and odorless, it needs special testing, so it's ignored.

Why is indoor radon a major cause of lung cancer, and how does it enter the body and cause harm?
Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive noble gas produced in the uranium-238 decay chain, with a half-life of about 3.8 days; it seeps from soil through foundation cracks and gaps and accumulates in poorly ventilated rooms. Its short-lived progeny, polonium-218 and polonium-214, attach to airborne aerosols and deposit on bronchial walls when inhaled, where alpha-particle ionization damages epithelial cell DNA and initiates cancer. Radon is therefore recognized as the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking, and sub-slab depressurization is the principal mitigation measure.

Which common houseplants weakly help cut VOCs (without mythologizing)?
Spider plants, pothos and ivy absorb small amounts of VOCs like formaldehyde in tests, but a single pot does little; the real fix is fewer poor boards and good ventilation. Plants are a bonus, not the main cleaner.

What do air-purifier 'CADR/CCM' labels mean, and how to avoid a rip-off?
CADR is clean-air delivery rate—higher cleans faster; CCM is cumulative filter capacity—higher lasts longer. Match the unit to room size with real, replaceable filters rather than chasing 'ions' or '99%' gimmicks.

Where does indoor formaldehyde come from, and which is more fundamental—ventilation or activated carbon?
Composite boards, glues and some fabrics are the main sources and keep emitting for years. Ventilation is the most effective way to remove released formaldehyde; activated carbon only adsorbs a bit and saturates—symptomatic, not fundamental.

Why must a newly renovated home be well ventilated before living in it?
New furniture and paint slowly release invisible odor molecules; opening windows lets fresh air carry them away so breathing inside is safer and more pleasant.
