How are whales connected to the ocean carbon cycle?

Whales redistribute nutrients and carbon across ocean depths through their movements and feces, boosting phytoplankton growth. When they die and sink, their bodies lock away carbon in the deep sea for the long term. Protecting whale populations is viewed as a natural way to enhance the carbon sink.

In fisheries management, why must the total allowable catch (TAC) system be combined with individual transferable quotas (ITQs) to effectively prevent the tragedy of the commons?

A TAC alone caps total landings but leaves every vessel an incentive to race for fish, producing derby fishing, overcapitalized fleets, and seasons compressed into a few weeks. ITQs break the catch into individual shares that can be held and traded, turning fishermen from rivals for a common stock into managers of a quasi-asset; costs fall and landings are timed to market demand. Experience in Iceland and New Zealand shows the TAC-plus-ITQ combination can rebuild stock biomass while raising industry profits.

At the cellular level, what is the causal chain by which heat stress drives corals to expel their algal symbionts and bleach? And why does a bleached colony that survives remain at high risk?

Warming first impairs photosystem II in the dinoflagellate symbionts, so excess excitation energy floods cells with reactive oxygen species that invade the host. The coral responds by activating apoptosis-like and autophagy-like pathways that expel the algae. Stripped of photosynthate—which supplies most of its energy budget—the colony subsists on plankton capture while its calcification rate falls sharply. Weeks of sustained heat exhaust reserves, causing starvation and tissue breakdown; even after color returns, growth and reproduction stay depressed.

What role do deep-sea ecosystems play in carbon storage?

Deep-sea sediments and benthic organisms store most of Earth's organic carbon long term, acting as the ultimate climate carbon reservoir. The biological pump carries surface carbon to the seafloor, where some is buried for millennia. Deep-sea mining or disturbance could release that carbon and harm fragile communities.

What role do marine phytoplankton play in climate?

Phytoplankton absorb large amounts of CO2 through photosynthesis and sink carbon to the deep sea as they die, forming the ocean's biological pump. They also emit gases like dimethyl sulfide that may influence cloud formation. Changes in their productivity feed back into the global carbon cycle and climate.

What is a marine heatwave and why is it harmful?

A marine heatwave is an event where sea temperature in a region stays abnormally high for an extended period, growing more frequent and intense with warming. It triggers coral bleaching, kelp forest loss, and shifts in fish communities, disrupting fisheries and food webs. Marine heatwaves often occur unnoticed yet hit ecosystems hard.

In fisheries management, why is maximum sustainable yield criticized as unsuitable as the sole management target?

MSY assumes stock growth depends only on abundance, ignoring natural variability, ecosystem interactions, and the economic cost of fishing. Harvesting at the biological maximum keeps stocks persistently low and leaves them prone to collapse when conditions shift abruptly. Many fisheries therefore move toward maximum economic yield or ecosystem-based management that embeds precaution and ecological objectives.

How does ocean acidification occur?

The ocean absorbs excess atmospheric CO2, which forms carbonic acid and releases hydrogen ions, lowering seawater pH. Higher acidity weakens the ability of shellfish, corals, and others to build calcium carbonate shells. This threatens marine food webs from plankton to fisheries.

What important ecological functions do seagrass meadows have?
