Why does the WHO environmental noise guidance set a stricter health benchmark for nighttime road-traffic noise than for daytime, and how do the damage endpoints underlying the two periods fundamentally differ?
Daytime evidence clusters around annoyance scores and cardiovascular responses such as elevated blood pressure, whereas the nighttime burden centers on degraded sleep architecture: delayed sleep onset, frequent micro-arousals, and reduced slow-wave sleep, with measurable shifts in salivary cortisol and ambulatory blood pressure even when sleepers recall an undisturbed night. Fragmented sleep then magnifies hypertension and ischemic heart disease risk, which is why the guidance lowers the night reference value. China's Noise Pollution Prevention and Control Law, in force since 2022, tightened provisions on nighttime construction and vehicle horns along the same reasoning.

At identical illuminance, why do cool-white LEDs rich in shortwave blue disturb nocturnal insects and migrating birds far more than warm-colored, low-color-temperature fixtures do?
Visual receptors of most nocturnal insects and birds peak between 400 and 500 nanometers, and shortwave blue scatters farther through the atmosphere, so phototactic attraction, disorientation, and circadian disruption all scale up with color temperature. Comparative field counts show insect captures near lamps fall sharply once fixtures switch to warm white below 2700 K. European cities such as Berlin have since capped municipal street lighting at 3000 K on this basis.

Why are nocturnally migrating birds so easily drawn off their migratory routes by urban artificial lighting at night?
Many night migrants steer by stellar cues and the geomagnetic field, but the blue-green component of broad-spectrum white LEDs scatters strongly in air, producing skyglow that masks those natural references. Close to a bright source a bird's pupils constrict and scotopic sensitivity collapses, so individuals circle the light until exhausted and strike buildings. Trimming upward light flux and dimming installations during migration peaks has been shown to cut both disturbance and mortality sharply.
