Why can't the plastic 'garbage patches' in the ocean gyres be cleared in one sweep, like netting an island?

Garbage patches are not solid floating islands but diffuse plumes that subtropical gyres have concentrated over decades. Sunlight and mechanical abrasion shatter the debris into millimetre-scale microplastics, and waves mix fragments through the water column, so concentrations stay low and patchy, usually counted as pieces per square kilometre. Trawling recovers little plastic while also removing plankton and fish larvae, which is why attention is shifting to source reduction and intercepting plastic in rivers before it reaches the sea.

How did the ocean "garbage patch" in the Pacific form, and why do currents gather floating plastic together?

The center of the North Pacific subtropical gyre lies between the trade winds and the westerlies; wind-driven Ekman transport pushes surface water toward the gyre's middle, where it converges and sinks, trapping buoyant debris in a high-pressure-like vortex that gradually builds the so-called Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It is not a solid floating island but a diffuse cloud of plastic through the upper water column, dominated by fragmented microplastics when counted by item; because plastic is light and degrades slowly, debris entering the convergence zone can stay trapped for years.

Why does plastic litter at sea mostly end up as ever smaller fragments rather than truly disappearing?

Ultraviolet radiation severs polymer chains and drives photo-oxidation, making plastic brittle and cracked; wave agitation and abrasion grind items into millimetre- and micron-scale debris. Yet common plastics such as polyethylene and polypropylene have stable carbon-carbon backbones that almost no marine microbe can digest quickly with enzymes, so fragments only get smaller and spread through seawater and sediments, with their total mass barely declining on human timescales.

What are marine microplastics, and why do they pose greater hazards yet resist cleanup far more than large plastic debris?

Plastic particles smaller than five millimetres. Besides fragments shed by weathering of larger debris, they include primary microplastics emitted directly as synthetic laundry fibres, cosmetic scrubs and industrial resin pellets. Being so small, they are ingested by zooplankton and filter-feeding shellfish, travel up food chains and accumulate in tissue, while their surfaces concentrate persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals that magnify toxicity. With scattered sources spanning orders of magnitude in size, interception or recovery at sea is nearly hopeless, so policy targets reduction at the source.

What is the plastisphere on the surface of marine plastic debris, and which new ecological risks did its discovery reveal?

The plastisphere is the distinctive microbial community that colonises floating plastic, a term coined by Zettler and colleagues in 2013. Because plastic repels water and lingers at the sea surface, it offers bacteria, algae and protists a stable substratum unlike seawater, and a biofilm takes shape within days. Two risks follow: potential pathogens such as vibrios concentrate on the particles and disperse over vast distances with the currents as disease vectors, while drifting plastics act as rafts carrying attached species across geographic barriers and sharpening marine invasion.

Where does most marine plastic debris originate, and through which pathways does it enter the ocean?

Mostly from land. Jambeck and colleagues estimated that in 2010 alone about 4.8 to 12.7 million tonnes of plastic waste entered the ocean from land-based sources, dominated by poorly managed municipal solid waste in coastal populations living within fifty kilometres of the sea. It reaches the water chiefly via rivers acting as concentrated conveyors, along with coastal dumping, tourism litter, and fishing or shipping gear abandoned at sea. Once afloat, ultraviolet light and wave action fragment the debris into microplastics that surface currents spread across the globe.
