How do soil erosion rates compare with natural soil formation rates?

In many farmed areas, human-accelerated erosion outpaces natural soil formation by tenfold to over a hundredfold, causing a net loss of fertile topsoil. FAO estimates large croplands are degrading unsustainably, threatening long-term food production.

What is peak phosphorus?

Phosphorus is essential to life and almost entirely sourced from finite phosphate rock, whose high-grade reserves are expected to deplete this century. Unlike recyclable nitrogen, phosphorus lost to the sea via wastewater is hard to recover, so 'peak phosphorus' calls for better recycling.

Why do straw checkerboard barriers widely deployed in northern China's desertified regions stabilize shifting sand dunes, and what is the underlying mechanism?

Straw checkerboards raise surface roughness, dropping near-ground wind speed below the threshold for sand entrainment and thereby weakening the erosive transport capacity of windblown sand. A stable turbulent layer forms inside each cell, causing particles to settle within it, while the decomposing straw adds organic matter and improves infiltration. This creates microhabitats where xerophytic shrubs such as saxaul and Artemisia sphaerocephala can establish, ultimately yielding a durable system that combines biological and engineering measures.

What is soil carbon sequestration, and what climate-mitigation potential is attributed to it?

Soil carbon sequestration is the process of capturing atmospheric CO2 and storing it long-term in soil organic matter through improved farming and forestry practices—such as no-till, cover crops, organic amendments, and agroforestry. Soil is among the largest terrestrial carbon pools, and the IPCC Land Special Report notes enhancing soil carbon can make a significant but limited contribution to climate mitigation.

How does soil 'grow'?

Pedogenesis is shaped by five factors—climate, organisms, parent material, topography and time: rock weathers into fragments, and litter and microbes turn into humus, gradually building structured soil. Forming a few centimetres of arable soil can take centuries.

Why can improper irrigation cause soil salinization?

Irrigating long-term with slightly salty water leaves salts behind as water evaporates, and without good drainage they build up. Salinization hinders crop roots from taking up water and cuts yields, a challenge in many old irrigated regions like the Mesopotamian plain.

What is soil salinization, and why does it commonly arise in irrigated agriculture?

Salinization is the buildup of soluble salts in soil to levels that harm crop growth. In irrigated agriculture, poor drainage combined with high evaporation concentrates salts at the surface, gradually hardening the soil and lowering yields—a long-standing problem in many ancient irrigation regions such as the Middle East and Australia.

What are the main technical approaches of China's Three-North Shelterbelt Program for combating desertification?

Launched in 1978, the program stabilizes shifting dunes and lowers wind speed by combining linear shelterbelts, enclosure for natural regeneration of trees and grasses, and protective networks around farmland and rangeland. In recent years it has shifted toward low-water-use configurations dominated by shrubs and native species under water-resource constraints, supplemented by straw checkerboard barriers and aerial seeding, prioritizing survival rates and regional water balance over simply expanding forested area.

Can regenerative farming turn fields back into carbon vaults — do no-till and cover crops really work?

Soils hold more carbon than atmosphere plus vegetation combined; tillage exposes organic matter to oxidation, costing global croplands twenty to thirty percent of soil carbon historically. Regenerative combos — no-till or reduced till, year-round cover-crop roots, legume rotations, organic amendments — show real gains in topsoil carbon in meta-analyses, though subsoil often stays flat or falls as carbon merely relocates upward: a caution against local wins declared global. The sturdier consensus values co-benefits — water retention, biodiversity, fertilizer efficiency — treating carbon credits as bonus requiring careful accounting.
