What quantitative relationship exists between urban compactness and residential transport emissions?
Empirical studies show that, controlling for income and other factors, higher population density and job mix lower per-capita trip distance and car dependence, reducing transport emissions. Yet excessive compactness without green space and services can raise heat-island and livability costs.

What should life-cycle assessment (LCA) account for when comparing urban transport options?
LCA must account for energy and emissions across manufacturing, energy production and end-of-life, not just the driving phase. An EV on a high-carbon grid loses much of its advantage, and battery production and recycling burdens must be included or the true impact is understated.

Beyond cooling, what role do urban green spaces play in the urban water cycle?
Green spaces intercept rainfall and promote infiltration, reducing runoff and delaying flood peaks, while transpiration moderates local humidity. Well-placed green networks also filter some stormwater pollutants, easing eutrophication pressure on receiving waters.

What is transit-oriented development (TOD) and why does it help build low-carbon cities?
TOD concentrates high-density, mixed-use development around rail and bus hubs, shortening trip distances and raising transit mode share. It cuts reliance on private cars and per-capita transport emissions while improving land and infrastructure efficiency.

How does the sponge city concept use natural processes to ease urban flooding and runoff pollution?
Sponge cities use sunken green space, permeable pavement and rain gardens to absorb, store and cleanse stormwater, cutting peak flows and recharging groundwater. Coupling grey drainage with green infrastructure raises resilience to heavy rain.

What combined environmental and health benefits do urban slow-traffic systems provide?
Continuous, safe walking and cycling networks replace short car trips, directly cutting exhaust and carbon emissions while increasing physical activity and lowering chronic-disease risk. Benefits depend on separated right-of-way, easy connections and perceived safety.

How do walking, cycling, bus and EV rank by carbon per trip?
Walking and cycling are near-zero, public transit next, EVs depend on grid cleanliness, and a solo gasoline car is highest. Walk or bike short trips; take transit for medium ones.

Does shared mobility unambiguously reduce urban transport emissions?
Shared mobility does not necessarily cut emissions: if it induces trips that would otherwise be walked, cycled or taken by transit, or adds deadhead mileage, net emissions may rise. It is more likely to help only when it replaces car ownership and raises vehicle occupancy.
