Why does a city's changing "soundscape" also reflect ecological health?
Frog, bird and insect sounds signal life; noise drowning them shows stressed habitat. Recording "sound diversity" estimates urban biodiversity without disturbing animals.

Why is the urban "heat island" often strongest at night?
Concrete and asphalt store daytime heat and release it at night, while rural vegetation and soil cool fast; after dark the city's "leftover warmth" makes the gap with suburbs wider.

Why can raptors like kestrels survive among city high-rises?
Building gaps mimic cliffs, and greens and pigeons supply prey, so the city offers "artificial cliffs" and steady food; with little disturbance, raptors nest right above us.

Why can green roofs both cool and help the city "swallow" rainwater?
Vegetation and soil block sun and cool by evaporation, lowering top-floor heat; they also sponge up rain, easing sewers—a small "one-green-many-uses" infrastructure.
