Can urban tree cooling be estimated with leaf area index (LAI)?

LAI is total leaf area per ground area; more leaves mean more transpiration and shade. With canopy shape and surface albedo, models estimate how many degrees a street cools and how much AC power is saved, guiding planting.

Roughly how much water does a mature tree take up and transpire a year (cooling in numbers)?

A mature tree can transpire hundreds of liters over a summer; the evaporative cooling rivals small AC units, and its shade can drop surface temperature by a few degrees—the city's cheapest natural cooling.

How does a rain garden keep a neighborhood from flooding?

A sunken planted bed with porous soil lets rain soak in, store and drain slowly like a sponge, easing sewer load while recharging groundwater and feeding insects.

Why plant native trees rather than expensive exotics for pest and drought resistance?

Native trees are tuned to local climate, soil and insects—drought-tolerant, pest-resistant and food for local wildlife. Exotic 'show' trees need more water and care and can turn invasive.

How does a community garden connect strangers (social capital)?

Shared digging, watering shifts and harvests create natural talk and mutual aid; studies link community gardening to higher neighbor trust and less loneliness, with green space that's easy to reach.

Beyond looks, can a green roof cut the top-floor AC bill?

Soil and plants act like insulation—blocking heat in summer and retaining it in winter—cutting top-floor temperature swings and AC or heating use, while catching rain and extending roof life.

What measurable benefits do urban 'pocket parks' give residents' health?

Studies link nearby green space to lower stress hormones, better sleep and more walking; even a small patch acts as a daily 'city charging point' for rest and neighborly contact.

Why should a neighborhood have a 'quiet corner'?

People and small animals need a break from noise: to read, hear birds and let shy creatures settle. Quiet is a kind of green that's rare and valuable in cities.

Why is it cooler under a street tree in summer?

The big tree is like an umbrella blocking the sun, and its leaves 'sweat' (transpire), carrying heat away—so the shade is much cooler than sun-baked pavement.
