What is a marine 'dead zone,' and how does it form?

A dead zone is an area of water with such low dissolved oxygen (hypoxia) that most marine life cannot survive, usually tied to eutrophication from land-based nutrient inputs and the oxygen consumed as algae decompose. More than 400 coastal dead zones have been documented worldwide, with the Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone near the Mississippi Delta among the largest.

What classes of pollutants do the Stockholm and Minamata Conventions control, respectively?

The Stockholm Convention (entered into force 2004) controls persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as DDT, PCBs, and dioxins—substances that resist degradation, travel long distances, and bioaccumulate in food chains. The Minamata Convention (2017) targets mercury and its compounds, restricting their mining, use, and emissions to protect neurological health and ecosystems.

Why are PFAS called 'forever chemicals' and hard to remove from water?

PFAS contain extremely stable carbon-fluorine bonds that resist biodegradation and persist for decades in bodies and ecosystems. They dissolve in water and resist coagulation or chlorination; only activated carbon or reverse osmosis works, at high cost and with fluorinated-sludge disposal problems.

What unique risks do PPCPs pose as emerging contaminants?

PPCPs—antibiotics, hormones, sunscreens—pass through sewage treatment incompletely; even trace levels can disrupt wildlife endocrine systems and spread resistance genes, with long-term low-dose drinking-water exposure whose mixture toxicity is still poorly characterized.

Which heavy-metal pollution is linked to Minamata disease?

Minamata disease was caused by methylmercury discharged from a factory into Japan's Minamata Bay, where it built up in fish eaten by local people. Methylmercury severely damages the nervous system, especially in fetuses and infants.

What do BOD and COD each measure?

BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) is the dissolved oxygen microbes use to break down organic matter, showing how much biodegradable pollution is present. COD (chemical oxygen demand) measures total oxidizable matter including harder-to-degrade substances; both indicate water pollution.

How do microplastics get into drinking water and salt?

Plastic waste fragments below 5 mm, flows to the sea via rivers, and enters the food chain through shellfish and fish; sea salt is made by evaporating seawater that concentrates microplastics, and tap water draws from contaminated lakes and rivers—so both can contain them.

What is groundwater pollution and why is it hard to fix?

Once contaminants seep into aquifers they spread with slow flow, and groundwater turnover takes decades to millennia. Cleanup by pumping or in-situ remediation is extremely slow and costly, so prevention far outweighs treatment.

What is eutrophication, and what human activities typically cause it?

Eutrophication is the degradation of water quality when excess nutrients—mainly nitrogen and phosphorus—trigger algal blooms that later decompose and consume oxygen. Major human sources include agricultural fertilizer runoff, livestock wastewater, and municipal sewage, which turn waters green, foul-smelling, and hostile to aquatic life.

Does boiling fix heavy-metal water pollution?

No. Boiling kills microbes but cannot remove lead, arsenic or cadmium—and can even concentrate them as water evaporates. Removing metals needs reverse osmosis, ion exchange or special media.

Why is excess nitrate in groundwater dangerous?

Excess nitrogen fertilizer seeps through rain into groundwater, raising nitrate levels in wells. In infants it can cause 'blue baby syndrome' (methemoglobinemia), and long-term adult exposure is also linked to health risks.

Can birth-control residues in water feminize fish? Where does the endocrine-disruptor debate stand?

Synthetic estrogens like ethinyl estradiol slip through conventional sewage treatment. British experiments caging male rainbow trout below treatment works found vitellogenin — an egg-yolk protein females produce — in male blood; at high exposures males even grew ovarian tissue. Human effects are harder to assert: endocrine-active chemicals (phthalates, bisphenol A) are ubiquitous, observational studies hint at reproductive endpoints, but dose-response and causation remain contested. Regulation shifts toward mixture-level assessment plus source control — pharmacy take-backs and BPA-free receipt paper are small valves on this pipe.

Do phosphorus detergents relate to green rivers?

Yes. Phosphorus-rich wastewater feeds algae, turning rivers and lakes green and smelly with blooms. Many regions have restricted or banned phosphate detergents to curb this.

What are microplastics, and how do they enter the natural environment?

Microplastics are plastic fragments smaller than 5 millimeters, divided into primary microplastics made small on purpose (such as scrub beads) and secondary ones formed when larger plastics break apart. They enter rivers, oceans, and even soils via wastewater, litter, and atmospheric deposition, and have been found in the deep sea, polar regions, and the human body.
