What happens when groundwater is over-pumped, and why is it hard to recover?

Groundwater is recharged only by slow rainfall infiltration, yet pumping often outpaces it, so water tables fall steadily, triggering land subsidence, saltwater intrusion and drying springs. Once polluted, groundwater cannot clean itself within any reasonable time. In the North China Plain, inter-basin water transfer, water-saving irrigation and recharge projects have brought water levels back up — proof that with sound management, groundwater can recover.

What is virtual water, and why does a cup of coffee hide more than 200 litres of water?

Virtual water is the water embedded in producing a good or service — a cup of coffee, for instance, consumes about 200 litres once growing, processing and transport are counted. Water-scarce regions can relieve local pressure by importing water-intensive goods such as grain or cotton — virtual water trade. Grasping virtual water reveals how our consumption is connected to global water resources.

Why is organic farming usually better for soil, and where are its limits?

Organic farming forgoes synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, relying on crop rotation, green manures and biological control to maintain fertility and manage pests, so its soils usually hold more organic matter and its fields more biodiversity, while nutrient runoff pollution drops. But yields per hectare are generally lower than in conventional farming, needing more land — so judging its overall environmental impact requires comparing on a per-tonne basis.

What is desalination and what does it cost?

Desalination removes salt from seawater via reverse osmosis or distillation; it eases shortages but is energy-intensive, costly and produces brine harmful to marine life.

What is a sustainable fishery, and why can we not just catch as many fish as possible?

A sustainable fishery harvests no faster than the fish population can naturally replenish, typically guided by the Maximum Sustainable Yield. Overfishing pushes stocks to collapse — a large share of the world's fish stocks are already overexploited or depleted. Quotas, closed seasons and marine protected areas give stocks time to rebuild, which in the long run lets fishers catch more, more reliably.

What does wasting food have to do with climate change?

Roughly one-third of all food produced is lost or wasted, and making it consumed vast amounts of land, water and energy. If food waste were a country, its greenhouse emissions would rank behind only those of China and the United States. Cutting loss and waste relieves climate pressure, water stress and food insecurity at once — widely seen as one of the highest-value win-win-win actions.

Why does drip irrigation save so much water compared with flood irrigation?

Drip irrigation delivers water drop by drop to the root zone through a pipe network, wetting only where roots grow and slashing evaporation, seepage and runoff — saving roughly 30 to 60 percent compared with flood irrigation, while also reducing salt build-up. Paired with mulching and soil-moisture sensors, it waters crops on demand. In arid regions, drip irrigation is one of the technologies that keep agriculture alive.
