What are the key differences between cancer cells and normal cells?
Cancer usually arises from accumulated mutations in oncogenes or tumor suppressors such as p53. Cancer cells lose contact inhibition, proliferate indefinitely, evade apoptosis, recruit new blood vessels for nutrients, and can spread to distant sites. The immune system clears many abnormal cells along the way — a concept known as immune surveillance.

Why does organ rejection happen, and how is it controlled?
The recipient's immune system recognizes donor HLA (human leukocyte antigen) molecules on graft cells as foreign; CD4+ T cells are activated and help B cells make antibodies while activating CD8+ killers, which attack the graft—this is rejection. The clinical strategy has three layers: HLA matching before surgery to minimize mismatch, immunosuppressants (calcineurin inhibitors, glucocorticoids, antiproliferatives) to blunt T-cell activation, and long-term monitoring for chronic rejection. Acute rejection is mostly reversible; chronic rejection, often driven by antibody-mediated vascular injury, is the leading cause of late graft loss.

What lets MRI "see" inside soft tissues?
The body is full of water, and its hydrogen protons behave like tiny magnets. MRI aligns them with a strong magnetic field, then flips them into a high-energy state with a radiofrequency pulse; when the pulse stops, protons relax at different rates (T1, T2), and tissues differ in these relaxation times, letting the computer build a high-contrast image. Because soft tissues differ widely in water content and proton environment, MRI is especially good at showing the brain, spinal cord, joints, and other soft-tissue lesions; it uses no ionizing radiation, with the main concerns being magnetic-field safety rules such as implant restrictions.

Why does the immune system sometimes attack the body itself?
Normally, developing T and B cells are educated in the thymus and bone marrow, where self-reactive cells are deleted or suppressed — a process called immune tolerance. When tolerance fails, self-reactive lymphocytes become activated and attack self-proteins, producing diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Genetic susceptibility plus environmental triggers such as infections or drugs participate, and treatment generally focuses on dampening the aberrant immune response.

How do pancreatic hormones precisely regulate blood glucose?
Rising glucose makes β cells secrete insulin, which drives muscle and fat cells to take up glucose and promotes glycogen and fat synthesis, bringing glucose down; falling glucose makes α cells secrete glucagon, which stimulates hepatic glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis to raise it. Insulin and glucagon oppose each other, and their ratio determines whether the liver releases or stores glucose. Sympathetic activation plus cortisol and adrenaline also raise glucose during stress. When this system fails, diabetes results.

How does blood pressure rise, and why is hypertension called a "silent killer"?
Blood pressure roughly equals cardiac output times peripheral resistance. Stiffer and narrower arteries, an overactive renin–angiotensin system, and excess salt all raise resistance and push pressure up. Early hypertension is symptom-free, yet it silently damages the heart, brain, kidneys, and retinal vessels; by the time symptoms appear, organ damage is often already present.

Why does an injury often not hurt at first, with pain arriving later?
This is stress-induced analgesia: danger or intense stress activates brainstem descending inhibition (the periaqueductal grey–medulla pathway), releasing endogenous opioids that suppress pain transmission in the spinal cord so you can escape or cope first. As stress subsides and inflammatory mediators accumulate, pain emerges and may intensify. Pain is not a simple damage meter but an experience actively modulated by the nervous system.

How does a nerve signal travel between neurons, and how does a synapse work?
When an action potential reaches the presynaptic terminal, vesicles fuse with the membrane and release neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine or glutamate. These diffuse across the synaptic cleft and bind receptors on the postsynaptic membrane, opening ion channels and generating an excitatory or inhibitory postsynaptic potential. Enzymatic breakdown and reuptake then clear the transmitter, keeping signaling one-way and controlled.

How does the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis work?
Under stress the hypothalamus releases CRH, prompting the pituitary to secrete ACTH, which drives the adrenal cortex to synthesize cortisol; rising cortisol then feeds back to suppress CRH and ACTH, closing the loop so the stress response tapers off. Chronic stress or long-term glucocorticoid use can disrupt this balance, producing Cushing-like features or adrenal suppression—which is why steroid drugs must never be stopped abruptly.

Why is chronic inflammation linked to so many modern diseases?
Acute inflammation is short-term defence, but low-grade persistent inflammation keeps immune mediators acting on vascular endothelium, pancreatic islets, liver and brain, promoting atherosclerotic plaque, insulin resistance, fatty liver and neurodegenerative processes. Obesity, smoking, poor sleep, inactivity and gum disease all sustain it. Evidence supports lifestyle change rather than casually taking "anti-inflammatory" supplements.

Why is the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve S-shaped?
Hemoglobin has four oxygen-binding sites that cooperate: after the first oxygen binds, subunit conformational changes make the next bind more easily, so the curve is flat at low pressures and steep in the middle. In tissues, where oxygen tension is low and CO2, acidity, and temperature are higher, the curve shifts right, releasing more oxygen at the same partial pressure; in the lungs the opposite favors full loading. Exercising muscle depends on exactly this rightward shift for extra oxygen.

What are biomarkers, and what role do they play in precision medicine?
Biomarkers are objectively measurable indicators of normal or pathological states, including blood proteins, gene mutations, and imaging features. In oncology, molecular markers such as HER2, EGFR, and ALK directly determine eligibility for specific targeted drugs, while mutations like KRAS predict that certain drugs will fail. After treatment, monitoring markers such as circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) can detect minimal residual disease or relapse earlier than imaging. Precision medicine relies on exactly these markers to assign patients to treatments that actually benefit them.

How is immune memory formed and kept for years?
After a first infection or vaccination, B and T cells recognising the antigen expand massively, and some differentiate into long-lived memory cells residing in lymph nodes, bone marrow and tissues, while long-lived plasma cells in marrow keep secreting antibody. On re-exposure the response is far faster and antibodies bind better. Durability varies by pathogen, which is why some vaccines need boosters.

How do atherosclerotic plaques form in arteries?
Chronically elevated LDL cholesterol enters the damaged artery wall and becomes oxidized; macrophages engulf it and turn into lipid-laden foam cells, gradually building a lipid core covered by a fibrous cap — the atherosclerotic plaque. High blood pressure, smoking, and diabetes damage the endothelium, creating the conditions for LDL to deposit, which is why these risk factors compound each other. If an unstable plaque ruptures, platelets clot on its surface and the thrombus can block the vessel, causing a heart attack or stroke.

Why is cardiac repolarization closely tied to arrhythmias?
Cardiac action potentials last far longer than nerve ones because of a plateau phase (phase 2) where calcium influx roughly balances potassium efflux; this lengthens the refractory period, preventing re-excitation before full recovery and keeping pumping orderly. If gene mutations or drugs—certain antibiotics and antiarrhythmics—impair potassium channels, repolarization slows and the QT interval lengthens on the ECG, predisposing to malignant arrhythmias such as torsades de pointes. That is why checking the ECG after starting such drugs is standard practice.

How do bacteria make people sick?
Pathogenic bacteria first adhere to and colonize mucosal or tissue surfaces, evade immune defenses, and multiply, then damage tissues through exotoxins (e.g., diphtheria toxin) or endotoxins (a cell-wall component of Gram-negative bacteria) that trigger inflammation; much of the fever and pain in infection is actually the immune system's response. Antibiotics work by targeting bacterial-specific structures — such as cell-wall synthesis (penicillins) or the bacterial ribosome (tetracyclines) — giving them relative precision against bacteria while sparing human cells.

Why does stress cause stomach ache or an urge to go to the toilet?
The gut has its own enteric nervous system linked bidirectionally to the brain via the vagus nerve and spinal cord — the gut–brain axis. Under stress, sympathetic activation and hormones such as cortisol and CRF change gut motility and secretion, speeding transit and heightening visceral sensitivity, producing cramps and urgency. It is one reason irritable bowel syndrome flares with stress. Persistent symptoms deserve evaluation.

Why are viruses harder to fight than bacteria?
Viruses lack their own metabolism and ribosomes, so they must hijack host-cell machinery to replicate; many antiviral drugs therefore enter cells and inhibit virus-specific enzymes such as reverse transcriptase or protease, or block entry and assembly. Antibiotics attack bacterial-specific structures and are useless against viruses, which is why colds are managed symptomatically rather than with "anti-inflammatory" pills. Their small, fast-mutating genomes mean both immune memory and drugs may lag behind new variants — a key reason flu vaccines are updated yearly.

How is the hypertonic gradient in the renal medulla established?
The medullary osmotic gradient is built mainly by the countercurrent multiplier of the loop of Henle: the thick ascending limb actively reabsorbs NaCl but is impermeable to water, diluting the tubular fluid while concentrating the interstitium; the descending limb is water-permeable, and water is drawn out by the hypertonic interstitium, concentrating the fluid. Solute and water cycling between the two limbs raises interstitial osmolality progressively from cortex to papilla. This gradient supplies the osmotic driving force for antidiuretic hormone (ADH) to concentrate urine—the basis of renal concentrating ability.

What is ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) mismatch?
Gas exchange efficiency depends on matching ventilation (V) and perfusion (Q) in each alveolus; the whole-lung ideal ratio is about 0.84. Low ventilation with normal flow—as in airway obstruction or atelectasis—creates a “shunt-like” effect where blood passes poorly oxygenated alveoli; low flow with normal ventilation—as in pulmonary embolism—creates a “dead-space-like” effect. Both lower arterial oxygen tension, and the body compensates locally through mechanisms such as hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction.

What happens in the brain of someone with Alzheimer's disease?
The hallmarks are extracellular plaques of beta-amyloid and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles of hyperphosphorylated tau. These deposits progressively damage and kill neurons, disrupt the synapses and cholinergic (acetylcholine) systems needed for memory, and first hit memory-critical regions such as the hippocampus. As the disease spreads to other brain areas, it produces worsening memory loss, cognitive decline, and loss of ability to manage daily life.

How does the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) regulate blood pressure?
When renal perfusion pressure falls, sympathetic tone rises, or sodium in the distal tubule decreases, juxtaglomerular cells release renin, which cleaves liver-derived angiotensinogen into angiotensin I; ACE then converts it to angiotensin II. Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor that also stimulates aldosterone from the adrenal cortex (retaining sodium and water, excreting potassium) and promotes antidiuretic hormone release. Together these raise blood pressure and restore blood volume—which is exactly why ACE inhibitors lower blood pressure by blocking this pathway.

What is the molecular mechanism of muscle contraction, and why does it need calcium?
A nerve impulse at the neuromuscular junction triggers release of calcium from the sarcoplasmic reticulum. Calcium binds troponin, shifting tropomyosin to expose actin binding sites so myosin cross-bridges can attach and pull the filaments — the sliding-filament model. On relaxation, calcium is pumped back into the SR and cross-bridges detach.

Why does the sodium-potassium pump consume most of a neuron's resting ATP?
To keep Na and K gradients, the pump pushes 3 Na+ out and 2 K+ in per cycle, spending ATP directly. Even at rest the neuron must counter constant ion leak to hold its ~-70 mV potential, so this active transport can take close to half of brain cell energy. Stop the pump and gradients collapse, and the cell cannot fire normally.

How do type 1 and type 2 diabetes differ in mechanism?
Type 1 diabetes results from autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells, causing absolute insulin deficiency; it usually begins in youth and requires lifelong insulin. Type 2 diabetes is driven mainly by insulin resistance — cells respond sluggishly to insulin, so glucose cannot enter them easily — along with progressive beta-cell failure, and is linked to obesity, inactivity, and genetics. For this reason type 2 is often managed starting with diet, exercise, and weight loss, escalating to oral drugs or insulin only when needed.

Why does breathing depth matter more than frequency?
Each breath leaves about 150 mL in the airways where no gas exchange occurs—the anatomic dead space. What actually reaches the alveoli is alveolar ventilation, equal to (tidal volume − dead space) × respiratory rate. With rapid shallow breathing, a large fraction is wasted in dead space, so even if total minute ventilation stays the same, alveolar ventilation can fall sharply and cause hypoxia. That is why rapid shallow breathing is more dangerous than slow deep breathing in respiratory distress.

How does the body keep thyroid hormone levels stable?
The hypothalamus releases TRH, which makes the pituitary secrete TSH, and TSH stimulates the thyroid to produce T3 and T4. When blood levels of T3 and T4 rise, they feed back to suppress TRH and TSH. This negative-feedback loop keeps thyroid function automatically within range, which is why TSH is such a sensitive thyroid function test.

How is Helicobacter pylori related to stomach ulcers?
Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that survives stomach acid by secreting urease to neutralize acid locally while damaging the gastric lining; it causes the majority of peptic ulcers and is linked to chronic gastritis and gastric cancer. Most infected people have no symptoms, but when found with an ulcer or high risk, standard quadruple therapy can eradicate it. A follow-up test confirming eradication greatly lowers ulcer recurrence.

Why do people sometimes feel dizzy when they stand up suddenly?
When you stand, gravity briefly pools blood in the lower limbs, so venous return and blood pressure dip for a moment. Baroreceptors in the carotid sinus and aortic arch detect the drop and, via autonomic reflexes, speed up the heart and constrict vessels so blood pressure recovers within seconds. If this reflex is slow or insufficient—in older adults, dehydration, or with certain blood pressure medications—you may feel light-headed or even faint, a condition called orthostatic hypotension. Standing up slowly can help prevent it.

Why does a limb go numb and tingly after sitting cross-legged too long?
Sustained pressure reduces blood supply to a nerve and temporarily blocks conduction, so sensory signals become garbled and you feel numbness and pins and needles. When flow returns, nerve endings come back online together, firing abnormally in a burst — that prickly tingle. Occasional episodes are harmless, but frequent numbness or weakness deserves evaluation for nerve compression.

How is dietary fat digested and absorbed?
Dietary fat is first emulsified into small droplets by bile salts, then broken down by pancreatic lipase into fatty acids and monoglycerides. Together with bile salts these form micelles that enter intestinal cells, where triglycerides are rebuilt and packaged into chylomicrons that travel via the lymph into the bloodstream. That is why fat digestion and absorption are more complex and slower than those of carbohydrates.

How does the kidney make urine?
As blood flows through the glomerulus, water and small molecules are filtered out to form a primary filtrate. Tubules then reabsorb glucose, amino acids, and most of the water back into the blood while secreting extra waste. Healthy urine contains essentially no sugar or protein — a sign of how efficient tubular reabsorption is.

Why does your hand pull back from hot water before you actually feel the heat?
This is a spinal reflex. The heat signal travels up a sensory nerve to the spinal cord, which immediately sends a command for your arm muscles to pull away — much faster than routing the signal up to the brain and back. The signal also continues to the brain, which is why you feel the heat a moment later.

What is atrial fibrillation and why does it matter?
In atrial fibrillation the atria stop contracting rhythmically and quiver rapidly and irregularly, making the heartbeat uneven. The main danger is that stagnant blood in the atria can form clots; if a clot breaks off and blocks a brain vessel it causes a stroke. With anticoagulation, rate control, and rhythm management, stroke risk can be greatly reduced.

During the first infection, the immune system creates memory B cells and T cells that recognize the chickenpox virus. If the virus returns, these memory cells multiply within days and produce antibodies that clear it before it can spread widely. Vaccines create the same kind of memory, which is why vaccination offers protection too.

What is the "complement" in blood, and what does it do?
Complement is a group of plasma proteins that stand by in the blood and are activated in a cascade when they encounter pathogens or antibody-antigen complexes. Once activated, complement does three main jobs: tags pathogens for phagocytes to engulf (opsonization), recruits immune cells to the infection site, and punches holes in bacterial membranes to kill them. It is a key arm of innate immunity and also assists adaptive immunity.

What do FEV1 and FVC mean in a lung function test?
FEV1 is the volume forcibly exhaled in the first second; FVC is the total volume exhaled after a full breath in. Their ratio reflects how open the airways are: in obstructive diseases like asthma and COPD the FEV1/FVC ratio falls, while in restrictive diseases like pulmonary fibrosis the ratio stays near normal but total volumes are low. Doctors use these numbers to tell the two types of lung disease apart.

How do cavities form, and how can they be prevented?
Cavities form when bacteria on the teeth ferment sugar into acid that over time dissolves minerals out of the enamel. Early demineralization is reversible; once a cavity develops, it needs fillings or more complex treatment. Prevention hinges on cutting down how often you eat sugar, brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, and flossing—fluoride promotes remineralization and suppresses acid production by bacteria.

How are pain signals transmitted in the body, and why is chronic pain different from acute pain?
When tissue is damaged, inflammatory chemicals activate nociceptors, and signals travel up the spinal cord to the thalamus and then to the cerebral cortex, where pain is perceived. Acute pain is a timely alarm that makes us avoid harm; chronic pain reflects persistent over-excitation or central sensitization of pain pathways, so the alarm has broken down and needs dedicated management and treatment.

Helper T cells (CD4+) act like the commanders of the immune system, releasing cytokines that direct B cells to make antibodies and activate macrophages; killer T cells (CD8+) are the soldiers that directly recognize and destroy virus-infected cells and tumor cells. HIV mainly attacks CD4+ cells, crippling the command system, which is why advanced AIDS brings opportunistic infections.

How does oxygen get from the lungs into the blood?
Alveolar walls are a single thin layer of cells wrapped in dense capillaries, so air and blood sit almost directly against each other. Oxygen diffuses down its concentration gradient from the alveoli into the blood, where hemoglobin in red cells picks it up, while carbon dioxide diffuses back into the air you breathe out.

Why do you feel cold and shiver when a fever starts?
Once the set point rises, the body judges its current temperature too low and switches on heat production and conservation: skin vessels constrict (cold hands and feet) and muscles contract rapidly and involuntarily to generate heat (shivering). When actual temperature reaches the new set point, the chill fades; as the fever breaks, the set point drops and the body feels too hot, so you sweat heavily.

Why does blood sugar rise after a meal and then return to normal?
Carbs are digested into glucose that enters the blood, pushing blood sugar up. The pancreas then releases insulin, which helps muscle and fat cells take up glucose and prompts the liver to store surplus as glycogen, bringing levels back down. If glucose runs low, glucagon triggers glycogen breakdown to raise it again.

How does the brain control muscles with such precision?
The motor cortex sends commands down the corticospinal tract to motor neurons in the spinal cord; one motor neuron plus all the muscle fibers it innervates is called a motor unit. Muscles used for fine movements, like those of the fingers, have small motor units with few fibers per neuron, allowing precise control, while large muscles like the thigh have big motor units. The cerebellum and basal ganglia coordinate and balance movements to keep them smooth.

Why does the body raise its temperature during infection?
Immune cells detect pathogens and release cytokines such as IL-1, IL-6 and TNF, which act on the hypothalamus to raise prostaglandin E2 and reset the temperature set point upward. A higher temperature can slow some pathogens and boost immune cell activity. Fever is therefore a defence, not the disease itself; antipyretics lower the set point by blocking prostaglandin synthesis.

The kidneys filter about 180 liters of fluid a day—why do we only pass 1–2 liters of urine?
The glomeruli indeed filter about 180 liters daily, but roughly 99% is reabsorbed by the tubules. The proximal tubule recovers most water, sodium, glucose, and amino acids; the loop of Henle and distal tubule fine-tune the rest, leaving only 1–2 liters as urine. Only when blood glucose exceeds the renal threshold does glucose spill into the urine—one principle behind diabetes testing.

Why is the appendix no longer seen as a useless vestige but as taking part in immunity?
The appendix is packed with gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT), a site where the young immune system meets gut antigens and trains lymphocytes, and it can act as a “reservoir” of good bacteria to rebuild the microbiome after diarrhoea. Evolutionarily it links to caecal fermentation, not pure vestige. Inflamed (appendicitis), it still needs surgery—its physiology does not argue otherwise.

Athlete's foot is caused by dermatophyte fungi that feed on keratin and thrive in warm, damp places. Walking barefoot in public showers or pool areas, and wearing tight non-breathable shoes and socks, raise the risk. Antifungal creams work by blocking ergosterol synthesis in the fungal membrane, and finishing the full course usually cures the infection.

At the injured or infected site immune cells release histamine, prostaglandins and other mediators: vessels dilate, bringing more blood, so the area reddens and warms; vessels leak plasma and white cells into tissue, causing swelling; and mediators plus pressure excite pain nerves. Are smartwatch heart rate, blood oxygen, and ECG readings reliable?
Mainstream wearables use optical sensors and electrodes to track heart rate and blood oxygen, and some record single-lead ECGs that can hint at arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation; studies show they can catch AF that would otherwise go unnoticed. But these are wellness trackers, not medical diagnostic devices—if a reading is abnormal or you have symptoms, verify it with standard instruments at a healthcare facility.

How does a painkiller "know" where the pain is?
It doesn't. NSAIDs like ibuprofen circulate everywhere but only produce a marked effect where inflammation and prostaglandin synthesis are active, so they appear targeted. That also explains their systemic side effects on stomach lining and kidneys. Opioids instead act on central receptors, changing pain transmission and perception. Follow label instructions and clinical advice.

How do the bacteria in our gut benefit us?
Gut bacteria break down dietary fiber into short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate, which fuel gut cells and maintain the intestinal barrier. They also synthesize some vitamins, such as vitamin K, train the immune system, and crowd out harmful bacteria. Diet strongly shapes the composition and diversity of the microbiome, so what you eat directly affects gut health.

How does a pain signal travel from an injury to the brain?
Injured tissue releases chemicals such as prostaglandins, bradykinin and ATP that activate nociceptors; signals travel via fast Aδ and slow C fibres into the spinal cord, relay to the thalamus, then split to somatosensory cortex (location and intensity) and to anterior cingulate and insula (unpleasantness and emotion). That is why pain has both a place and a felt awfulness.

Why do we itch, and is itch the same system as pain?
Itch has partly dedicated circuitry: specific skin nerve endings respond to histamine, proteases or Mrgpr agonists, and signals ascend through itch-selective spinal neurons. It shares some fibres with pain but is coded by different neuron subsets, which is why antihistamines relieve some itches yet not pain. The scratch reflex likely evolved to remove parasites and irritants.

Blood inside veins is actually dark red, so why do vessels seen through the skin look bluish?
Veins never hold blue blood—their contents are simply dark red, and the bluish look is an illusion. Short-wavelength blue light is scattered by skin and stays near the surface, while longer-wavelength red light travels deeper, where hemoglobin—including that inside the vein—absorbs much of it. With far less red light coming back from where the vessel sits, the brain reads that region as bluish.

Its folk name borrows the word for ringworm, so is psoriasis actually a contagious fungal infection?
No. Psoriasis is not contagious and involves no fungus; it is fundamentally a chronic inflammatory skin disease driven by the immune system. In genetically susceptible individuals, overactive IL-23/Th17 signaling slashes the keratinocyte renewal cycle from about four weeks to a few days, so immature cells pile up in plaques covered with silvery scale. Antifungals are useless here; proper management relies on topical vitamin D derivatives and corticosteroids, phototherapy, and immune-modulating biologics.

Why does a cut form a hard scab?
When you bleed, platelets and fibrin in the blood weave a little net that seals the cut; the clot dries and hardens in the air into a scab. It works like a temporary lid that keeps germs out while new skin grows underneath. Don't pick it — it falls off by itself when the skin is ready.

Why does most of what we taste actually come from smell?
The tongue senses only five basics—sweet, salty, sour, bitter, umami—while a food's complex aroma is read by the nasal epithelium and fused with taste via “retronasal smell” into flavour. With a cold and blocked nose food “tastes of nothing” because smell is cut. That is why, pinching the nose, apple and onion are hard to tell apart.

Why does scratching an itch feel so good?
Scratching creates mild pain and touch signals that briefly suppress itch signals in the spinal cord, while reward areas of the brain light up — hence the pleasure. Unfortunately it is short-lived: broken skin releases more itch-producing substances, creating an itch–scratch cycle, so cooling or moisturising often works better than scratching.

Why do we get goose bumps when we're cold?
Each hair has a tiny muscle at its root; when you are cold or startled it contracts, standing the hair up and raising little bumps on the skin. In furry animals raised hair traps a warm layer of air; humans have little fur, so mostly we just get the bumps.

Why does your arm ache and you sometimes run a mild fever after a vaccine?
It reflects normal immune activation: immune cells gather at the injection site and release inflammatory mediators, causing local ache and swelling, while cytokines entering the circulation can bring mild fever, fatigue and muscle aches. These usually settle in one to three days, do not mean you are ill, and do not indicate how well the vaccine worked. Worsening or unusual symptoms should be checked.

Why does your nose run in cold weather?
The nose must warm and humidify incoming air, so cold air boosts mucosal blood flow and glandular secretion; meanwhile warm moist exhaled air condenses into droplets in the chilly front of the nose. Together they produce a clear, watery drip. This is normal physiology, unlike the thick yellow-green discharge of an infection.

Why do some wounds leave scars?
When the deeper dermis is damaged, the body cannot rebuild its original ordered architecture in time and patches the gap with rapidly laid collagen that is disorganised and lacks hair follicles and sweat glands — that is a scar. Deeper wounds, higher tension, infection and repeated injury make scars more obvious. Keeping wounds clean and moist, reducing tension and using sun protection help minimise them.

Why do cuts and scrapes often itch badly while the scab is healing?
That itch is generated by the repair process itself, chiefly through histamine release and irritated newborn nerve endings. While a wound heals, mast-cell histamine drives inflammation and new vessel growth yet doubles as the core itch signal; meanwhile young nerve fibers sprouting through scar tissue fire at the slightest pull, and the tightness from scab contraction and collagen deposition keeps triggering receptors. Scratching risks ripping fresh tissue, so cool compresses or moisturizer are safer choices.

Why do we have two eyes instead of one big one?
Your two eyes see from different angles and your brain merges them into one 3D picture — that is how you judge how far the ball is or how tall the step. Close one eye to catch a ball and it gets surprisingly hard. Two eyes are also backups for each other.

Why does my heart thump when I run? Does it ever get tired?
Running muscles need extra oxygen, so your heart pumps faster to deliver it — that is the thump. The heart is a super worker: beating about a hundred thousand times a day since before you were born, with tiny rests between beats, growing stronger the more you exercise.

Why do fingertips wrinkle like little prunes after a long bath?
Wrinkly fingers are not swelling — your nervous system shrinks blood vessels to fold the skin into tire-tread channels that drain water away, gripping wet things better. Experiments show wrinkled fingers pick up wet marbles much faster. It is built-in anti-slip gear.
