How do insulin and glucagon keep blood sugar stable?

After meals, beta cells release insulin to store glucose; when fasting, alpha cells release glucagon to free glucose from the liver. Working in opposition, they keep blood sugar in a narrow range.

What is the fundamental difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes?

Type 1 is autoimmune destruction of beta cells causing absolute insulin deficiency; type 2 starts with insulin resistance and later reduced secretion. Their causes, age patterns and treatments differ.

Why does cortisol rise when we are stressed?

Stress activates the HPA axis, and the adrenals release cortisol to mobilize energy and pause non-urgent functions. Useful short-term, but chronically high levels can harm immunity and metabolism.

What is negative feedback in hormone control?

When a hormone gets too high, it signals upstream glands to dial back; when too low, the brake lifts. This loop keeps hormone levels steady.

Why is menopause linked to falling estrogen?

As ovaries age, estrogen falls, affecting blood-vessel tone, bone turnover and mood - hence hot flashes and faster bone loss.

What does the thyroid do, and why can it make you heat- or cold-sensitive?

The thyroid hormones set your metabolic rate. Too much (hyperthyroidism) speeds metabolism - heat intolerance and palpitations; too little (hypothyroidism) slows it - cold sensitivity and fatigue.

Why do we sometimes grow taller suddenly?
