Why is glaucoma called the thief of sight?
青光眼是视神经进行性损害，常与眼内压升高有关。它最先损失的是周边视野，中央视力在很长时间内保持清晰，而大脑会自动“填补”缺损，因此患者往往等到视野明显缩小才察觉，此时损伤已不可逆。定期检查眼压、视神经和视野是唯一可靠的早期发现方式，40岁以上、有家族史、高度近视者更应重视。及时使用降眼压滴眼液、激光或手术可以延缓进展，保住剩余视野。
Glaucoma is progressive damage to the optic nerve, usually associated with raised intraocular pressure. It takes the peripheral field first while central vision stays sharp for a long time, and the brain fills in the missing areas, so people often notice only when the field has narrowed markedly - by which point the damage is irreversible. Regular checks of eye pressure, the optic disc and the visual field are the only reliable way to catch it early, especially after age 40, with a family history or with high myopia. Pressure-lowering drops, laser or surgery started in time slow progression and protect the remaining field.

In darkness the pupil dilates and the peripheral iris bunches up, closing an already narrow anterior chamber angle and blocking aqueous outflow, so intraocular pressure spikes abruptly. Typical attacks bring severe eye pain, ipsilateral headache, blurred vision with halos around lights, and often nausea and vomiting from vagal stimulation. Long sessions of reading a phone screen with the head bowed at night or emotional stress can act as triggers.

During an attack, lens forward shift or pupillary block stops aqueous from reaching the anterior chamber, the angle closes abruptly, and intraocular pressure can exceed 50 mmHg within hours. Corneal edema scatters incoming light, forming rainbow-colored rings around lights, known as halos. The pressure surge stretches trigeminal endings, causing intense ocular pain with ipsilateral headache, nausea, and vomiting, which is often mistaken for gastroenteritis or migraine and delays sight-saving treatment.

眼睛的晶状体原本高度透明，随年龄增长其中的蛋白质逐渐氧化、聚集，晶状体变得混浊发黄，光线无法清晰聚焦到视网膜上，于是视物模糊、怕光眩光、颜色变暗。紫外线暴露、吸烟、糖尿病和长期使用糖皮质激素会加速这一过程。白内障是全球致盲的首要原因，但手术摘除混浊晶状体并植入人工晶体是非常成熟有效的治疗，多数患者术后视力显著改善。
The eye's lens is normally crystal clear, but with age its proteins oxidize and clump, so the lens turns cloudy and yellow and can no longer focus light sharply on the retina - vision blurs, glare becomes troublesome and colours look dull. Ultraviolet exposure, smoking, diabetes and long-term corticosteroid use all speed the process. Cataract is the leading cause of blindness worldwide, yet removing the cloudy lens and implanting an artificial one is a mature, highly effective operation after which most people see much better.

Your hands carry lots of germs you cannot see, and rubbing pushes them into your eyes, which can cause the red, itchy, swollen eyes of conjunctivitis. Rubbing hard can also scratch the very thin surface layer of the eye and make it hurt and itch even more. If your eyes feel uncomfortable, wash your hands first, then close your eyes and hold a clean cool cloth over them for a while - and tell a grown-up so you can see a doctor if it keeps bothering you.
