What kidney functions do dialysis treatments replace?
Dialysis uses a semipermeable membrane to remove uremic toxins like urea and creatinine and correct fluid, electrolyte and acid-base balance, partially replacing filtration and regulation - but not the kidney's endocrine roles.

What is GFR and why does it reflect kidney function?
GFR is the volume of fluid filtered by both kidneys per unit time, depending on blood flow and filter surface. A sustained drop suggests nephron damage and is central to staging chronic kidney disease.

How do the kidneys filter blood and make urine?
Each kidney has about a million nephrons. Blood is filtered at the glomerulus; water, wastes and small molecules enter the tubule, useful substances are reabsorbed, and the result becomes urine. This removes waste while balancing fluids and electrolytes.

How do kidney stones form and why do they hurt so much?
When urine becomes supersaturated with calcium, oxalate or uric acid, crystals clump into stones. Moving or blocking stones irritate nerves and cause spasms - severe colic pain. Drinking enough water dilutes urine and lowers risk.

Why is holding urine too long unhealthy?
An overfull bladder raises infection risk and pressure, and prolonged retention lets bacteria multiply. Emptying when you feel the urge is healthier.

Why do we pee every day?
Your body turns extra water and food waste into pee so it can send the junk out and stay clean and comfy.
