Why does listening loudly through headphones for long periods damage hearing?
Hair cells in the cochlea convert sound waves into nerve signals, and sound that is too loud or lasts too long damages them - in humans they cannot regenerate, so the loss is permanent. WHO's safe listening advice is no more than 40 hours per week at under 80 decibels for adults, with a stricter limit of about 75 decibels for children. Ringing, a blocked feeling or muffled hearing afterwards means the dose was already too high. A practical rule is 60-60: no more than 60% volume for no more than 60 minutes at a stretch, and noise-cancelling headphones help you hear clearly at lower volume.

Why does the face turn red when we feel shy?
When shy or nervous, the body opens tiny blood vessels in the face so more blood flows through and it turns red. This is a normal reaction showing you care about others' opinions.

Why do children grow taller each year?
The body's bones and muscles keep growing, especially the leg bones lengthening, so a child gets taller. Eating well, sleeping, and playing sports help healthy growth.

Why do we get hiccups?
A hiccup is the diaphragm twitching suddenly, making air rush into the throat with a "hic" sound. Eating too fast or drinking fizzy water often causes it, and it usually stops on its own.

Why do we have two ears?
The tiny time difference between two ears lets the brain calculate whether a sound comes from the left or right, called sound localization. Two ears also help each other hear clearly in noisy places.

What causes motion sickness in cars and boats?
Motion sickness arises from conflicting sensory input: the vestibular organs in the inner ear feel bumps and acceleration, the eyes see a relatively still cabin, and muscles and joints report a third version of events, so the brain struggles to reconcile them and triggers nausea, sweating and dizziness. That is why reading or looking at a phone makes it worse, while watching the distant horizon, sitting where motion is least (front seat of a car, middle of a boat) and keeping fresh air moving all help. Antihistamine or scopolamine medication taken before travel can help, and most people gradually adapt with repeated exposure.
