Why does REM sleep deprivation selectively impair emotional memory consolidation?
During REM, the amygdala talks more with hippocampus and neocortex to re-process emotional experiences into long-term memory while calming over-arousal. Experiments show that after REM loss, memory bias toward negative stimuli and emotional reactivity rise and daytime regulation drops. Walker and colleagues (2009) laid out this sleep–memory relationship.

Why is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) preferred over sleeping pills?
Chronic insomnia is usually maintained by poor sleep behaviors and worry about sleep itself. CBT-I rebuilds the sleep-wake rhythm with behavioral techniques such as sleep restriction (compressing time in bed) and stimulus control (going to bed only when sleepy), and adds cognitive restructuring to dismantle the anxiety of “must fall asleep.” RCTs show effects comparable to medication, but without dependence, tolerance, or next-day drowsiness, and the gains persist after treatment ends—so guidelines in many countries list CBT-I as first-line therapy.

Why does cataplexy occur in patients with narcolepsy type 1, and how is it related to the loss of hypothalamic orexin (hypocretin) neurons?
In narcolepsy type 1, selective loss of orexin (hypocretin) neurons in the lateral hypothalamus leaves cerebrospinal fluid orexin-A extremely low. Orexin normally stabilizes wakefulness and stops REM sleep from intruding too early; without it, arousal becomes unstable, causing irresistible daytime sleepiness, while emotion-triggered cataplexy reflects inappropriate activation of the REM muscle-atonia pathway. The strong HLA-DQB1*06:02 association points to autoimmune involvement, and low CSF orexin-A helps confirm the diagnosis.

Should loud snoring be a concern?
Simple snoring is common, but loud snoring with witnessed pauses, gasping awakenings, and severe daytime sleepiness may signal obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA causes repeated hypoxia and fragmented sleep, and over time raises the risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive problems. If suspected, a sleep study confirms it; continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is first-line treatment, with weight loss and side-sleeping also helping.

What stages make up human sleep?
Sleep consists of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. NREM includes light (N1, N2) and deep (N3) stages; deep sleep is key to physical recovery and immunity, while REM is when the brain is active and dreaming mostly occurs. Cycles last about 90 minutes and repeat 4–6 times a night—deep sleep dominates the early night and REM increases toward morning.

Why do long-term night shift or shift work raise cancer and metabolic disease risk?
Night light and irregular schedules disrupt melatonin and the circadian clock, unsettling glucose, blood pressure and hormones and weakening DNA-repair processes. The IARC classes “shift work with circadian disruption” as a probable carcinogen (group 2A) and links it to higher obesity and type 2 diabetes risk. Limiting consecutive nights and protecting dark, quiet daytime sleep lower the impact.

Why does the upper airway collapse repeatedly at night in obstructive sleep apnea, and how does this explain daytime sleepiness and long-term hypertension risk?
When awake, pharyngeal dilator muscles such as the genioglossus contract continuously against inspiratory negative pressure to keep the airway open. Their tonic activity weakens at sleep onset and nearly disappears during REM sleep. In someone whose airway is already narrowed by obesity or a small jaw, the lumen collapses repeatedly; each episode lowers oxygen, triggers a micro-arousal that fragments sleep, and activates sympathetic output, raising long-term risks of hypertension and cardiovascular events. Nasal CPAP acts like a pneumatic splint and remains first-line therapy.

Most adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep for good health. Chronic short sleep raises risks of obesity, depression, and cardiovascular disease. Sleep quality matters as much as duration.

Why do we close our eyes to sleep?
Eyelids act like little curtains that block light and dust so the eyes stay moist and comfortable. Closing them also tells the brain "time to rest," making it easier to fall asleep.

Why does the body sometimes jerk right before sleep?
That is a hypnic jerk: as muscles relax, they sometimes mistakenly think you are falling and give a tiny jump. It is a normal little glitch, not an illness, and you can just roll over and keep sleeping.

Why do we feel fresh after a good night's sleep?
During sleep the brain clears away waste built up in the day and files memories, so thinking feels clearer on waking. The body also repairs tired spots overnight, leaving you full of energy.

Why does the body grow taller while we sleep?
During deep sleep the brain releases growth hormone, telling bones and muscles to lengthen and strengthen quietly. So for children who want to grow, sleeping on time and long enough matters.

Is snoring always a disease?
Occasional light snoring is common and not necessarily a disease. But if paired with breathing pauses and daytime sleepiness, it may be sleep apnea and needs medical evaluation. Excess weight can worsen snoring.

Why do we yawn?
Scientists think yawning lets cool air into the mouth and helps cool the brain down a little, making us a bit more alert. When tired or bored, the body uses a yawn to perk up.

Why does using a phone before bed affect sleep?

Why can intense exercise right before bed make it harder to fall asleep?
Hard exercise briefly raises core temperature, heart rate and adrenaline, and the body needs time to cool and settle before sleep comes. The mental buzz afterward also delays bedtime. Keep intense training at least 2–3 hours before sleep, or switch to gentle stretching and a walk to relax.

Sleep paralysis and ghosts — what's the real science of waking unable to move?
Sleep cycles include REM dreaming phases during which the brain paralyzes muscles so you cannot act dreams out. Sleep paralysis is waking before the lock releases: conscious but frozen for minutes. Cultures blamed spirits; science calls it common sleep paralysis, more frequent under stress and irregular schedules — side sleeping plus routine helps.
